Agree - but the City does not put teeth into it's crackdowns - it's always half-hearted.
No, that is not 'residents' that is Bayside.
In Vallonia this is all but official policy in the Community Board from hell.
Why would someone move from the other side of the world to start a new life, only to keep up with the same savage behavior and traditions?
New York City - Illegal aliens, illegal conversions, illegal and bogus ID's, illegal identities. People come here to scam Americans and if they get caught, run back to their countries. Poor Americans have nowhere to run or return to. We are just stuck with all the bills the illegals run up.

Man on the street comments are the worst type of reporting. The typical person on the street has nothing of value to add to journalism unless they were a witness to something.

As bad as it is here its a hell of a lot better than where they came from - and where else does the castoff become the favored tweeded ready to vote for their buddies the tweeders - or even better - not vote and keep the same morons in office term after term.

Yes, where the leadership soles exists to rip out the pipes and hoodwink the gullible.
I know of blocks in Flushing, Maspeth, Middle Village and Ridgewood where illegal apartments are the norm. Entrances in the backyard into basement apartments and second floors in two family homes that are divided into two three room apartments are all too common.
Utilities are included in the rennts so there are only a couple of electic and gas meters outside. But, if you look on the roof or the side of the house there are multiple TV dishes. And if you own a home with a driveway be ready to have it blocked by cars that cannot find legal spaces.
I've reported this problem to city officials (Hear this Councilwoman Crowley!) and the complaints are ignored.
Sure there is a hue and cry when several kids are killed in a fire in an illegal appartment but the noise dies down in a week or so and life (ahem, death) goes on.
Don't waste your time calling Crowley's office. I've called numerous times about illegal apartments and excess garbage and cars on the street, and nothing has ever been done. Think of the revenue the IRS is missing out on with all these landlords making an additional 1200 in cash and not reporting it as income.

It's even worse then that. The reporter can chose what interviews to show to create an impression.

I have a bit of news for you folks -it's not only "illegals" who live in those shit places.
There are working class Americans who have been squeezed out of decent housing thanks to Pataki/Bruno's gutting of rent regulations.
These crappy firetraps are all they can afford now.
Blame the greed of your neighbors (who build these traps) blame the landlords who bought this disgrace through their puppets; the Albany republicans.
I never met anyone who was living in an illegal apartment because of a dearth of rent regulated apartments. They are either 1) cheap (not poor), 2) hiding from someone or 3) a relative of the owner.

Then you have not met very many people.
The diminution of regulated apts has had a squeeze-out effect on the working class and poor.
Even fro the tenants in unregulated units, you now see 6-7+ in a two bdrm -with most not staying longer than 2-3 years.
i don't blame them, who want to live like you are still in a dorm when you are pushing 30.
I have never met anyone, even those living in Manhattan, who live 6-7 to an apt. And in Queens, this is practically unheard of. On the other hand, illegals will pack into basements and sleep in shifts, not because of rent regulation, but because they make like $50/week.
43-31 Bowne street Flushing 50+ people living in a house illegally converted and its been reported to D.O.B. for 10 yrs and nothing has been done ;-( I guess we have to wait for some poor child to die first !!!!

Oh I see so we are supposed to feel sorry for or be concerned about those who live on top of each other so they may live next to Central Park? A more affordable apartment with more space in Brooklyn or Queens is beneath them? My heart doesn't bleed for them. Also, illegals can't find work anymore and very well may make next to nothing each week. THEY AREN'T WORKING FULL TIME, THAT'S THE POINT.
