Protesters demand evictions be put on hold

Angry homeowners facing foreclosures demanded Friday that city officials stop evicting tenants until President Obama's recovery plan jolts the economy.

Chanting "stop evictions now," the demonstrators descended upon the Queens office of City Marshal Edward Guida, who served more than 600 foreclosure-related eviction notices last year.

"Even though we paid our mortgage on time for years, because of illegal activity at our bank, any day now, we could get an eviction notice from a marshal," said Nina Bryce, 62, of Jamaica, Queens.

Bryce, who fears she and her husband could be evicted by the end of the month, served Guida with a mock eviction notice inside his Corona office, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

The demonstration, organized by the advocacy group ACORN, came a week after Team Obama launched a $75 billion plan to help homeowners stay afloat.

It's simple. You don't pay your mortgage, you get out. Too bad for you.

Yes. But it is also like the saying," If you owe the bank a thousand dollars, you're in trouble. If you owe the bank a million dollars, the bank is in trouble."

When the mess is big enough it affects the safety of the depositor's cash and the well-being of the surrounding neighborhoods as well as the value of the collateral used to secure other financial instruments.

Since the number of foreclosures is outrageous, this is a really dangerous issue.

Yes George, I agree with you on that. I lived through the 70's and I remember the breakdown of social order then.

I'm hoping that we don't go down that road again.

My question is, where do they think these people are going to live once evicted. On the streets. When this happens, the crime rates are going to skyrocket. Poverty levels are going to skyrocket. It's just going to be an all around worst situation.

Sliding down the slippery slope. If mortgagors get bailed out, why not renters?

Can't Obama print some scratch for these people too? Goose meet gander. Mind you, I dont think there should be good for either.

Evictions will increase the number of displaced tenants as innocent bystanders lose their homes along with the guilty.

An African American friend of mine had the roof over her and her children's heads threatened because her illegal alien homeowner landlord went home to attend a funeral and then could not come back.

How crazy is it that she, a rent-paying American citizen whose family helped build this country through 6 0r 7 generations can be bounced into the street because of the stupidity of the banks and the landlord?

Regardless of how it all turns out, renters will get it in the neck.

If Obama didn't exist, Maspethian would have to invent him in order to cast all the world's evil upon him.

What would you do? Have families tossed into the street? It's a rotten situation that Obama did not create. Now he has to find a solution for the imminent evictions caused by years of predatory lending.
