ALBANY - Newly minted state Senate Democratic Majority Leader Malcolm Smith is in hot water for making embattled Sen. Hiram Monserrate a committee chairman.

Anti-domestic violence advocates, Republicans and even some Democrats say Smith sent a bad message by giving Monserrate the chairmanship before his felony assault case is settled.

Smith announced on Monday night that Monserrate, who has been accused of cutting his girlfriend with a broken glass, would head the Consumer Protection Committee.

"Giving this person a position of authority is a slap in the face to all women in the state," said Marcia Pappas, president of the New York chapter of the National Organization for Women.

And then there's this from 1010WINS.com:

"It's very surprising, it really is," said Patti Jo Newell, the director of public policy for the New York state Coalition Against Domestic Violence. "We are at a historic change within the New York state Senate ... to wait and see what happens with his case should not be too disruptive, but instead he's been given a chair and been sworn in, and that has cast a shadow."

His first committee investigation is going to demand that the drinking glass manufacturers show that their product is safe for use in domestic violence.

This guy is going in and this issue will be forgotten.

Gives you an idea on what the clubhouse think is 'good enough' for Queens.

They think we are a bunch of losers who don't know any better.

Once they got the Latino community and that women to protect him, everything is fine.

Sort of reminds me of what they used to say about blacks and knives and how, within the context of 'that community' stabbings and cut-ups are no great deal because that is what 'those people' are always doing to each other.

Pretty sad how the entire borough is now getting the rep of a ghetto.

Isn't there any moral standards in government anymore? Domestic violence is a crime. Let him stand trial, and if vindicated, let him be sworn in. Why was there such a rush to swear him in?

Why rush?

Have to protect and insure the majority. Majority rules. Minority begs for scraps.

Highly embarrassing. If a pebiscite was held for Queens, I wonder if the majority of people would allow him to take his seat.

At this point we can bitch and moan because since he's elected he can take the seat now (though it's not exactly the moral thing to do, but he is a politician). Let's see if he gets re-elected; then we'll have no one to blame but ourselves.

He should get a chair...the electric chair.
