From the Daily News:
New Sen. Hiram Monserrate will continue to chair the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, but will forgo his $12,500 stipend until the felony assault charge pending against him is settled.
Senate Democratic spokesman Austin Shafran told DN Albany Bureau Chief Ken Lovett that the decision to “defer” Monserrate’s stipend was made “at Sen. Monserrate’s request.”
Asked why the Queens lawmaker is being allowed to continue on as chairman, Shafran said: "We need the committee’s work to go foward and Sen. Monserrate’s participation is necessary toward achieving that goal.”
Shafran noted there are 35 committees and just 32 Democratic members, adding: "Right now we need all of our members to serve on their committees to make sure we’re meeting the needs of the people."
