This commercial crap condo was the subject of my last Curbed post yesterday afternoon. The addresses are 70-11 thru 70-23 Austin Street in Forest Hills.
This eyesore went up in the late 80's. I remember it being built. I think it was developed by Heskel Elias, who has since refined his style. Most recently, he restored and renovated Forest Hills' 1st apt building, the Brittany on Austin St (1926).
He is hoping to build a high-rise hotel on Austin St, which he coins "Neo-Tudor." Despite its unnecessary size on a narrow thoroughfare and parking problems it would pose, it would entail the demolition of the current eyesore and the corner Ann Taylor shop. A smaller version of the hotel might be a welcomed addition. Any thoughts?
That thing's been there forever. It's not just a blight on the eyes, but also a blight on all the businesses that have failed there over the years. It has zero sidewalk level storefront space, which means you have to climb up or down stairs to get to anything from street level. That's not conducive to making a happy customer.
One of the Hevesis, Dan I think, used to have his office here. The proposed hotel certainly looks better than this "cram-as-many-tenants-in-as-possible" monstrosity. I wonder if the elevators in those shafts actually work.
Well, you'll all be happy to know it will be coming down eventually.
Sadly, that will mean the demise of Austin Thai and Corfu - two of the best dining bargains on Austin St. in decades. (I won't mourn the loss of Garcia's.) Also, this will evict Piu Bello, which is a good non-Starschmucks place for lattes and has great gelato.
I'm getting a little tired of ego maniacs like Elias who feel compelled to pull their dicks out of their pants (architecturally speaking of course) and flaunt their repugnant "creations" like common flashers expecting the community to oooh and aahhh and marvel at what they've built !

Why your neighborhood is full of Queens Crap
"The difference between dishonest and honest graft: for dishonest graft one worked solely for one's own interests, while for honest graft one pursued the interests of one's party, one's state, and one's personal interests all together." - George Washington Plunkitt
The above organizations are recognized by Queens Crap as being beneficial to the city as a whole, by fighting to preserve the history and character of our neighborhoods. Bring on Steve Reeves as Hercules...He'll pull this crapola down.

My vote is for Victor Mature as Samson
(from an earlier flick).....
tie him to those columns and he'll bring it all down.
Delilah can watch!
Crap certainly seems to be the operative word.
Those obelisks are the appropriate color.....brown !
There are condos in this thing? I thought it was only retail and offices. I can't imaging living over all of that.
They are commercial condos, according to the signs.

Piu Bello & Garcia's are not in this complex. They're in the one next door.

I wouldn't trust that scum to build a decent dog house
let alone a hotel !
