Shadow smothering Steinway

Strolling through Astoria, thought I get a glimpse at the Steinway Mansion that I have read about all these years on Queens Crap by George the Atheist.

Truly a sight to behold.

How to disappear the Steinway Mansion completely

As predicted nine months ago - HERE, the view of the Steinway Mansion is slowly being obliterated for warehouse construction along 41st Street.   Looking north.  Catch it while you can.

Sad Steinway saga continues

We drove by a few days ago and found warehouse construction at the lot just south of the Mansion proceeding as planned.  A few more months and the view of the Mansion will most probably no longer be visible due to the height of the planned warehouses.  (Our previous blog coverage HERE and HERE.)

George The Atheist's long awaited Steinway Mansion update...and it's strictly commercial

We asked 14 months ago - HERE - what was to become of the parcel of land immediately adjacent south of the Steinway Mansion.

 Answer:

Photo 1. Schematic of  a 2-story manufacturing building
with cellar designed by Gerald Caliendo and owned by

Philip Loria (1839LorLLC) and Sal Lucchese (1839 LuccLLC).

Photo 2.  Looking east across the extremely narrow 41st Street

at 18-39, the former property of the late owner Armin Urban.

Photo 3.  All's quiet at night as bulldozer "sleeps" for
the next day's foundation excavation work.

Photo 4.  Steinway Mansion to be further hemmed in by additional proximate development.

Photo 5.  It's official.  Who's who.  What's what. And where and when.

Work expands at Steinway Mansion

From George the Atheist:

After 5 months of inactivity since purchasing in March the properties (18-39 & 18-41) immediately south of their Steinway Mansion on 41st Street, the new owners of these adjoining lots, Salvatore Lucchese and Philip Loria, are currently demolishing the residence, storage sheds, and garage of the late Armin Urban, the previous owner.

And what will we now, pray tell, have here?

Steinway Mansion owners purchase adjoining property

From George the Atheist:

The owners of the Steinway Mansion, 18-33 41st Street (Block/Lot 802/31), Salvatore Lucchese and Phillip Loria, were deeded less than three weeks ago - February 28 - possession of 2 parcels of adjoining land immediately south of the Mansion on 41st Street: 18-39 (Block/Lot 802/27) and 18-41 (Block/Lot 802/29).

The two addresses belonged to the late Armin Urban who passed away last year. The deeds to the properties were conveyed to Lucchese and Loria (aka1839 Lucc LLC and 1839 Lor LLC) 18 days ago by Urban's heirs.

Question for Queens: How will this recently acquired property be used:
1. For a Steinway Mansion expanded parking facility?
2. For new development of commercial and/or residential units?
3. For park-like recreation?
4. To lie fallow for possible sale in the future?

Steinway Mansion undergoing extensive restoration

Henry E Steinway Mansion Restoration 2017 from Gabriel Espinosa on Vimeo.

"Wow! What a stroke of good luck I had today! After taking Pilar to the airport I took Logan on a mini-tour of the old neighborhood. One of the sites I wanted to show him was the old Steinway Mansion (of Steinway piano fame) in Astoria. We drove up to it and apparently the old house has a new owner who decided to restore the mansion to it's former glory and then some! The place was buzzing with workers and I asked if I could come in to take some pictures. I was allowed. I went through the entire house from the tiny watch tower at the top where it is said Mr. Henry E. Steinway, the original builder/owner of the mansion and also the founder of the Steinway Piano Company had a scope with which he used to check out what used to be North Beach and is now Astoria Park, all the way down to the basement! What an exhilarating adventure this was! They have kept all the original fixtures, wood, crown moldings, fireplaces, chandeliers, stairwells, etc and are skilfully restoring everything by hand. In these pictures you will see almost every room and close up details of the interior and exterior architecture and decor. The old cars and van in these images were there, exactly as they are now, when I was a kid back in the 70's. Unfortunately the place is shrouded in plastic sheeting because of the work but it is see-thru so you can see just about everything." - Gabriel Espinosa

Strange parking regs at Steinway Mansion

Hello Crapper:

Here's a brand new sign found by the "Steinway Park" warehouses on 42nd Street. Any idea what's going on? I have no idea. The warehouse facades are complete. The sidewalk is open to pedestrians. The work now occurring there is the finishing up of the interiors. The exteriors plus sidewalks are now complete.

At the front,
GtheA

PS The arrow on the sign points leftward but there is no signage further south along 42nd street to indicate where the "no parking" ends.
