Asians want their own voting districts

From the Daily News:

Asian-American voters in Queens and Brooklyn sued the governor and other state officials this week, saying their voting power is unfairly limited by the way the state’s legislative districts are drawn.

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund filed a complaint Wednesday on behalf of four New Yorkers, arguing they must get equal political representation when the state rejiggers district lines after the most recent census.

"The current district lines are invalid under the U.S. Constitution and state law because Asian Americans' votes count less than the votes of other New Yorkers,” said Glenn Magpantay, director of AALDEF's Democracy Program.

The way lines are currently drawn, AALDEF argues, the city’s largest Asian-American neighborhoods are split up into different districts, breaking up what could be a powerful voting block.

Just about every middle class neighborhood is broken up into different voting districts and the last time I checked every vote counted as much as every other vote; there's no weighting. So what are you talking about?

What about my rights as an American!! I'm sick & tired of people who demand that because of their ethnicity, they have the right to set things up this way or that way or change the rules to make it their own ethic district. Our forefathers must be turning over in their respective graves at what's going on in America today. This country is becoming a place that is further away from what they wanted for all "Americans". I'm so sick of it and truly wish all these people would shut up. They're all here living the American dream which is a lot better then living in their own countries.

What's wrong with the voting districts in: Hong Kong; Taiwan; Macau; Singapore; China?

Aren't there several "Asian" voting districts in those lands?

The creation of a special district that favors ONE particular group is ILLEGAL and will never happen!

These arrogant Oriental pups think they're powerful Foo Dogs!

But, in fact, they're just noisy yelping tea-cup poodles!

Yes, Asians want more power to elect other Asians, because that's not racist, or something.

I am white and my neighborhood is split up in different districts too. Can I sue?

"Don't Tread On Me " ,let the progressive /liberal illegal alien lobby in Queens see that we are ready to resist their invasion of our electoral system, by flying this flag at our residences.

support the TEA PARTY PATRIOTS......

Maybe they should focus on these issues back in China, vote in a non-Communist government, so we wouldn't have to waste American tax dollars on such a stupid proposal. Maybe I'll sue to have Little Italy redrawn.

What bullshit !
These brats just want there voting districts colonized. Next they will demand a private city in Queens with its own laws.
Laws to serve turtle jelly soup, counterfeit products and prostitution on every street corner.
Nothing good !!

You'll have to ask the Koch bros. about opening the money tap again. That's why there hasn't been a "rally" of those idiots in over a year.

As for the topic at-hand: What is an Asian?
Take a look at the nations listed as "Asian":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_and_dependent_territories_in_Asia

Many of the places have ZERO in common with other Asian nations and often don't even like each other.

Out in Queens there are sizable Paki and Hindi neighborhoods -two groups not exactly in-love with each other.

There are also tons of Philippinos, Koreans and Chinese. Aside from certain facial features, how likely are they to vote for each other's candidates?

When you see a call for group 'empowerment' it's often just one group or individual angling for power.

Anon. No. 7:

Where does it say that the Liberals and Progressives you so despise support this?

My question is how can you sue over a plan that hasn't been released or voted on yet?

I think they're firing a shot across the legislature's bow here, Crapper. It's a very obvious attempt to intimidate.

one can not despise any person who is ill ,like the progressive.lib/dem ones, who continue to push failed local and national policies on the rest of us.

Then move back to Asia!

Anonymous said...

And they can have them. In China.

Anonymous said...

Why didn't they all move into the same district then?

Anonymous said...

If they think they're really going to get one....somebody's brains are stir fried!

I thought the Floo-shing Chinese have a friend in Peter Koo.

Ooops...
I forgot he lives in Great Neck and doesn't really give a damn.

I mean I'm a white guy and all and this is silly but you commentators realize that you do have a "white" voting block right? You know, like the majority of all voting areas in the entire nation. No one is denying the rights of white people. Don't play the same made up persecution game.

I am Puerto Rican by decent and I want to organize my own voting district. What is the procedure? Do I have to sue the Governor? Now if any politician acts on this Asian demand I will personaly organize a strong rally right here in Flushing demanding that my Flushing flushing district be comprised solely of voting Puerto Ricans. If I go to China and demand my own voting district I will be deported or executed on some back restaurant street. Take Heed Asians this is America, not china.
