Illegal hotel rentals widespread

From the NY Post:

In order to legally sublet an apartment, renters are required to obtain written permission from their landlords, according to state law. It’s also illegal to charge more than 10 percent above the rent.

The vast majority of rental apartments in New York City are also considered Class A apartments, and it is illegal to sublet them for less than 30 consecutive days.
But thousands of New Yorkers sublet on the sly, hiking up their rents to turn their leases into nightly moneymakers.

Critics say the main problem is security.

But more than 1,500 brazen New Yorkers are subletting their apartments -- many on a night-to-night basis, like hotels -- on AirBNB.com.

Some New Yorkers said they’ve even signed leases on other units.

Believe me, lots of landlords are doing this too (renting out apartments to tourists for 2-3 weeks or so) - seems to be yet another way to get apartments de-stablized.

Time to move on. Ever hear of a thing called "prohibition"? That didn't work either. There is absolutely no way to "fix" this. No landlord is ever going to be sent away for 5 years, and his property seized. Ever. Best thing that can be done is to figure out how the city can cash in on this revenue.

Reminds me of when I was travelling through the Greek Islands by ferry boat. Everytime we docked, you could depend on a gaggle of elderly women on the pier yelling out "ruums! ruums!" They'd fight for you, grab you by the shoulder and take your bag in their hands. Then they'd lead you to their house up a hill around the corner and plunk you down in a nice curtained room with a view. All for ten bucks a night. Great deal.

and those GREEK ladies never had to pay property tax to Greece.

that is why they protest about, now that they are bankrupt.

I feel like this has been going on for years, but the minute everything piles up, then the city wants to crack down thereby sending the task force in. Why even go there? You know what, people are going to do what they want regardless of what this law says. So what, if it prohibits the rental of New York City Departments for less than 30 days!! Folks are going to delve into whatever loop holes that they can find to get around this. They have no regard for the what is dictated to them, and if there is any way to make money by posting on Airbnb, and other sites for owners and renters to sublet their apartments, they will do so because they have that option. As long as Manhattan is a tourist attraction; you're practically saying "bring on the money." It is a never-ending battle..
