There ARE a lot more accidents. I regularly see fender bender and more serious accidents. Anyone who gets around by car sees them also. There are also plenty of instances of drivers or pedestrians killed (124 so far this year in NYC) or seriously injured by careless or otherwise out of control of their vehicle drivers. Come on crappy, you get around the borough by car right? You can't honestly say you don't see plenty of careless or incompetent drivers on the roads and numerous accidents that appear completely avoidable, like the regularly occurring rear end accidents on the LIE.
NYC has one of the lowest traffic fatality rates in the country. Yes, there are still accidents here, but nowhere near the amount in other parts of the USA. So we drive safer here.

Fatal accidents alone do not indicate driver ineptness.
In a state with 19 million people, and not all of them drive, there were 519,000 drivers involved in almost 315,000 accidents statewide. Something tells me our standards for who drives could be a little higher. By the way, we all pay for these accidents through higher auto and medical insurance premiums.
If that doesn't convince you then think about it from another approach. To get your license you have to pass a simple multiple choice test in the language of your choice, and then pass a ridiculously basic road test on some quiet side streets where making a K turn and parallel parking and not hitting anything are pretty much the only requirements. And if you really have trouble doing that you can keep trying as many times as you want until you happen to get it right one time. Then you get a license and you are free to jump on the highway whether you are capable of driving on the highway or not. Do you really think this a reasonable standard for making sure people are capable drivers? We all see drivers that do not even understand some of the basic rules of the road.
I'm sorry but you still haven't backed up your original statement. If half the people driving shouldn't be on the road because they don't know how to drive, and there are millions of drivers in the state, then there should be millions of accidents in the state. There aren't, because most people know how to drive, and also how to react when there are other dangerous drivers present.

Do you drive in Manhattan? There are a great number of yellow cab drivers who can't drive for shit. I mean can't even stay in a lane or properly look before swerving across two or three lanes of traffic. Statistically yellow cabs have less accidents per mile than regular passenger cars. Does that mean they are better drivers? Anyone who drives in Manhattan or rides in yellow cabs knows they are not.
Also, those statistics don't even account for baby fender benders that aren't reported. I've been bumped from behind a few times over the years (while sitting at a full stop) by idiots who don't have any respect for the privilege of driving. Plenty of things like that don't even get reported or counted.

Not any more, you just need to pay $150 and get your class license changed to a Class E. No tests or standards are involved, anybody can get e DMV window. You can drive Limo's, passenger vans, cabs and trucks up to 18,000 pounds GVW as long as they are not HAZMAT or nuclear isotope carriers.
I have a class E to drive the remote audio truck it.
Joe, you can drive up to 26,000 gvr without a CDL. Plenty of full size overweight trucks being driven by people with regular licenses, no training, and no DOT medical exam.
Correct I just looked, yep its upped it from 18,000 to 26,000 last time I checked. Thats just plain old nuts and outright CRAZY !!
