Something smells rotten in Astoria

From the Queens Courier:

A putrid smell fills the air, as sewage streams along 43rd street in Astoria.

Berry Fresh Farm Inc., a supermarket located at 43-26 Ditmars Boulevard in the LaGuardia Shopping Center, has been perturbing people in the community with the street conditions in back of their store.

According to multiple residents, garbage is often spewed on the road and sidewalk on 43rd street, which is directly behind the supermarket. The waste, which repeatedly contains rotten foods and liquids, releases a rancid odor which suffocates the community.

Lucille Hartmann, the district manager of Community Board 1, assures that the residential complaints have been forwarded to the Department of Sanitation.

Councilmember Peter F. Vallone Jr., who represents Astoria, has contacted the management company of LaGuardia Shopping Center and Berry Fresh in hopes of resolving the situation. If no solution can be found, Vallone Jr. says he will involve city agencies.

Wow, this story is identical to the problems we are having on our block. Super Halal Meat.com at 253-06 Hillside Avenue in Bellerose. This store opened last year and has ruined the quality of life on our block. We are having the same problems and the city has been unable to enforce or correct any of the issues. The garbage in the rear of Super Halal Meat is disgusting, foul smelling, illegally stored and probably worst then Berry Fresh Farm, Inc.
If the city agencies involved won’t do anything when a store is operating illegally and not in compliance with existing zoning regulations, how are they going to fix this problem?
Good luck

Great, you crow about one store on one block while not covering the annual summer story of how the whole community smells like shit house while they still add residents big time outpacing infrastructure.

Peter hands out promises there too.

Forget what we read on QueensCrap, Vallone is now a champion of communities:

Article says he championed a dead guy, not a community.

Ah, give Junior a break.

He's our next DA.

Thanks for pointing this out. It is an absolute disgrace and a health hazard. Rest assured that if the politicians choose to ignore this, the community will do what it must to address this direct assault on our quality of life. Berry Fresh Farms, their landlord (Rosenwach Group, A.K.A. LaGuardia Center) and their carting company should not only be ashamed of themselves, but should be fined and made to apologize to the residents that have been affected by their collective gross disregard.

Sure. Vallone will call a press conference, invite all you to stand around him as backdrop, and he will get yet another photo-op looking stern and statesmanlike and glowing tributes for what passes for journalism in your nabe will pour in.

Then you will all go home, feell good that he is doing something, winter comes, the problem abates, then it comes back next summer and you repeat the cycle.

Its Astoria for Chistsake, not Brooklyn or Manhattan.

I am no fan of Mr. Vallone, so your assessment of his high profile political response is greeted with approval and agreement but let me caution you that you do not have a monopoly on civic outrage and a distaste for things that hurt our neighborhoods. If you have no personal knowledge of the post's author, then assuming that they will just take any politician's lip service and skip back happily and ignorantly placated, may be a mistake.

Astoria may not be Brooklyn or Manhattan, but it is one great nieghborhood.

Vallone could care less about Astoria -- just look around with the graffiti -- cars being trashed -- robberies -- drunks on DItmars -- garbage in the streets -- do I need to say more come on now wake up

THEN YOU DON'T KNOW ASTORIA.

Yes, but some of us are not developers and it sure the hell ain't what she used to be even a few years ago.

Poor leadership will do that to you.

Is Vallone a good guy?

Talk to the webmasters of this blog. I would never do some of the paradies they did on the Vallone Family.

Its one thing to disagree, its something else to insultingly poke 'fun'.

Political cartoons have been around since the dawn of newspapers. Don't see anything different or more insulting here.

Parodies = humor. I suggest you get a sense of one.

May we interrupt Crappy and Vallones mutual love fest with this humorous observation?
