Liu panders to unions

From Politicker NY:

City Comptroller John Liu — who worked out with New York City firemen Saturday yesterday and donned a helmet at their conference today – got a standing ovation when he vowed to protect union pension benefits.

Liu, who is likely to run for mayor in 2013, told the audience gathered at the Hilton this morning, “There are some people in New York City and across the country who have talked about how we can’t uphold the deal we made with our workers.”

“When people talk about we have to eliminate some of the pay that many years ago were bargained and fought for by our fire officers and fire fighters, I say no,” said Liu. “A deal is a deal.”

In response, the attendees of the conference — representing firemen from across the country and Canada — gave Liu and immediate standing ovation.

Liu went on to describe the pension deal the city made years ago with firemen as “sacred” and should not be “messed with.” The comptroller said undermining firemen’s confidence in the city’s ability to protect them and their families in case they get injured on the job could “undermine” their confidence “and put the greater public at risk.”

One thing for sure....
Wellington Zhou Chen is always keeping his teeth sharp somewhere behind the scenes....awaiting his latest opportunity to cash in.... regardless of who's holding office.

Beware that little puppeteer behind the curtain.

He's the most dangerous of them all!

He really like like a dick head in that photo. He should go back to work in his family-owned sweat shop where he can be more effective. He stinks as comptroller as much as he did as a Council Member.

You twerp. A "deal is a deal" only for as long as agreed to in a contract, dingus. Who says future contracts cant be modified????

I always enjoy the comments, but everyone needs to do more than talk. Remember, Liu came out of Queens CB7, and it's no better than when he left, probably worse.
If your going to change this system you must vote, but vote outside the established two parties.
Write in, Write in, Write in !

just a "hose" job. when there are few taxpayers left working and living in n.y.c., the pension funds will deplete.

taxpayers leaving, less money for n.y.c.....more freeloaders arriving, with no income is a larger burden on those taxpayers left.

a 9. % unemployment rate makes public pensions UNSUSTAINABLE.

adjust the public union contracts now and all will benefit in the future.

At least he is trying to help people who are middle class workers who do try to make a city a bit of a better place to live in. There are enough politicians who are up the developers behinds, who do nothing but destroy the city. So I would rather have him help the unions than the developers.

One 'anonymous' got it right.. nothing in a collective bargaining agreement is forever. Now no one wants to be stingy with guys who walk into burning buildings to save us. But Jeez. Do you understand that their pensions are based on total earnings over the last few years of work? And the contract gives all the opportunity for time-and-half (or more) overtime to the most senior people?

It's a license to soak the taxpayer.

To the other 'anonymous' who'd rather he help unions than developers... don't make the mindless mistake that unions' interests are the same as those of the workers. Hah.

And while no one needs to shed a tear for developers... who creates more jobs? Developers or unions?

I'm just saying... let's confine the golden goose, not kill it.
