Wrongful arrest has taxpayers paying

From the Daily News:

The city will pay $35,000 to a Brooklyn grandmother falsely arrested for prostitution.

Monica Gonzalez was busted on the bogus charges while walking to Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park after suffering an asthma attack in the middle of the night.

The city - which has paid out $80,000 to settle four federal suits against Officer Sean Spencer - admitted he trumped up the case.

"Officer Spencer falsely reported to the assistant district attorney that he saw [Gonzalez] beckon to three male passersby and that he was aware that plaintiff was previously arrested for [prostitution] when the plaintiff had never been arrested for this offense," city lawyer Caroline Chen wrote in court papers.

Gonzalez, 41, has been married for 15 years and never charged with a crime.

Wonderful, further proof that all policemen are very smart and are looking out for the safety of the common taxpaying people.

Years ago my sister, a teenager was waiting for a bus at Queens Plaza. Although she was conservatively dressed on her way home from work, she was also hassled by policemen who insisted that she was a prostitute.

They asked her for ID and then drove her home in a squad car. One of them had been drinking and my sister was absolutely terrified.

All the more reason why it should be legal in the first place.

Women who prostitute do it mostly because they were abused as girls. They need help, not legalization.

For those police fans out there"

"...the NYPD's payouts increased 11% percent, to $102.8 during fiscal year 2008, which ended September 30th. Of that amount, $35.2 million was paid in settlements over charges of improper police action".

Bill Thompson wanted to make agencies budgets -directly- responsible for lawsuit settlements.

I think that cops would be a little more careful if all that overtime was at stake.

You can't save the world, and people will always have "issues" with the way they were raised. Pot and prostituion should be perfectly legal, those that want to partake can, and those that don't, won't.

No you can't save the world, but the government shouldn't sanction the continuing of the abuse. Some of these women have had their teeth knocked out by their pimps, who beat the shit out of them. I guess after they legalize it, pols will just demand that pimps pay medical and worker's comp for them...

Interesting, but there is a little more to this story that hasn't been made public yet, that will shed alot more on what actually happened that night. I wouldn't be so quick to defend this woman.

Let's see, the city admitted it was a bogus case, the officer is facing disciplinary action and at the age of 41, she has never been arrested before for anything. I rarely believe everything I read, but this isn't looking good for those who think there's more to the story.

There won't be a need for pimps if it's legal - just like there's no need for speakeasies now - because booze is legal.

Why won't there be a need for pimps? There would still be streetwalkers and people making a living off them.

Well, I'm not a pimp, nor have I ever been to a prostitute (but I've voted for them!) but I am assuming that the pimp brings in the business, sort of like a "steerer" in a buy-and-bust. why would you need a "steerer" if you can advertise your services? in fact, why would you even need to walk the streets? Tell you what, I'll split the difference. Let's make what happens behind closed-doors between consenting adults perfectly legal, and just keep it off the streets?

Pimps make their money by recruiting underage girls to work for them. Do you think this activity will stop if it is legalized?

Spencer... Another Irish imbecile costing tax payers thousands of dollars.

The NYPD needs to be completely revamped and start over from SCRATCH.

The NYPD hate the Constituion of The United states more than ANY group to ever exist in The United States of America.

How do you know that "Spencer" is Irish? Could very well be black.

Actually, the surname Spencer is not Irish at all.

No, that's why I'm not advocating underage prostitution.

Maybe his family hails from Northern Ireland?
Another cop story.
I frequently run in Maspeth in the early morning and always always see black motorist stopped by white officers. The crime, driving while black, I suppose.

Pimps earn their money by keeping men from just zipping up their pants and walking away without paying or physically injuring or killing the girls.

A pimp is a vicious thug who forceably recruits kids by rape, but he also keeps the patrons in line too.

That is why they are not going anywhere if street prostitution is legalized. You still have to have some way of making the chumps pay.
