From NY1:
Police are searching for two men who shot and killed a livery cab driver in Queens last night.
Authorities say officers answered a call of a man shot on 11th Street in Long Island City around 11:30 p.m.
When they arrived, the found the 62-year-old driver shot once in his car.
He was pronounced dead at Cornell Medical Center
Police say two men approached the car, shot the driver and fled the scene in another car.
They say there were no passengers in the livery cab at the time and that it does not look like the driver was robbed.
From the Village Voice:
Livery cab drivers have it tough. You may recall a little epidemic of livery cab driver shootings last summer, and various robberies. Now, four hacks have been robbed or threatened with robbery on 106th Avenue in Jamaica in a nine-day period.
On December 27 two perps summoned the car to 106 Avenue, and showed a stun gun; on the 31st a guy called a ride for 106th Avenue and showed a knife. On January 4th, another driver dispatched to 106th Avenue was faced with a knife, but he managed to chase the robber off.
On January 3rd, someone requesting a ride from 106th Avenue pulled a knife robbery; he's the only one of the perps caught on camera, though evidently he put effort into making himself hard to identify. He is believed to be involved with all four incidents.

LIC, the same place that the woman knifed the man a few weeks ago?
I want my friends and family to stay in those hotels.
I want to buy a co-op for my daughter there.
Don't you?
Was it also 11th Street where the artist lady was found murdered?
There is no crime in N.Y.C., what are you talikng about??? Somebody better tell that troll Bloomberg....
I'm guessing this was 11th street near the Queensbridge Projects. I see these yuppies new to the area jogging up Vernon Blvd past the Queensbridge park, are they asking to get robbed?
Only a retard would pay to live down the street from the biggest projects in the world. 96 buildings, 3300+ apartments of nothing but shit.
11th street never crosses/intersects with the QUeensbridge houses. Infact 11th street is probably the hardest way to get into the QUeensbridge houses.
"It's Still dangerous to be a livery cab driver". It will ALWAYS be dangerous to be a livery cab driver. Better yet it will ALWAYS be dangerous to live in QUeens.
Livery cars are required to receive fares by dispatch and cannot pick up fares if they are flagged on the street or cruise to do so.
These livery cars are suspect of being uninsured or suspect unlicensed drivers. How is it that illegal aliens are able to be and are commonly in this profession? Think 2x before getting into these cars next time your life depends on it.
11th Street actually starts at the Queensbridge Projects north of the bridge.
The Daily News reports that the driver was on his way back to the taxi garage.
11th st is dissected by the Projects, also runs from Queens Plaza South to hit Jackson near 48th Ave, then Borden. Starts again south of the LIE to hit 53 Av. :)
11th St, aka "Central Ave" from the old pre-numerical days. Speaking of pre-numerical, I can't tell you how many people ask me where "Ely" and "Van Alst" streets are.
How much of taxpayers money will go into Silvercup, hotels, etc, just a few short blocks away.
the boyz will have fun with 1000 of people. like shooting pigs in a toilet
we stop talkin about prositutes and the problem disappeared so developers can come in.
11th Street has much less foot traffic and car traffic than Vernon Boulevard. This is especially true north of the bridge and Queensbridge Houses. Fewer eyes on the street. From my casual observation, it's also less patrolled. This is one reason, along with the need for uninterrupted passage and less truck speeding, bicycle commuters prefer Vernon Boulevard.
People have no idea. And not just livery drivers too. This danger is behind a lot of illegal service refusals dismissed as mere racism.
My father, a 6 foot 4 ex-RAF commando drove a yellow cab for decades. He radiated menace and was often mistaken for a cop.
I cannot tell you how many times he was involved in hand to hand combat with thugs all in exchange for a pittance.
this is no-mans land after dark.
i told q.c. about two asian limo-drivers getting beaten badly by 2-3 black predators in december '09. they were walking to their cars at 10 pm.
pistols are a must.
Long Island City is not safe at night.

Typical NYC reaction, blame the victim. What color is the sky on your planet?
No, the typical NYC reaction is to avoid jogging in the ghetto.
Another pos perp who doesn't know he was being videotaped.I'm sure someone who knows him already gave him up to the cops for the reward $$$.
I park my car in LIC in the early morning hours, say 5 a.m., and I see all these shaddy people. Alot of cab drivers going to get their yellow cabs and construction workers going for the train. But then there are the ones that just walk around, waiting I guess to see who they can mug. And lets not forget the homeless. Just across from one of these new condos I witnessed a homeless guy, in a squat, taking a dump. Boy I guess these condo people really did'nt look into what they were buying. It would be safer for them to live in Harlem!
It would be much safer for them to live in Harlem. I took classes in the Midmanhattan School on 120th Street in Harlem for 6 months and in that time no one looked at me crosseyed.
I am as Irish as Paddy's Pig and would far prefer Harlem to that modern-day Five Corners/Den of Iniquity known as Queensbridge/Queensboro Plaza.

the 23 street/40th avenue intersection years ago was the local nypd prostitute sting area. it is now, sometimes, a speeding and stop sign violation spot. with all the violent crime(death and bodily injury)occurring now, there should be a task force patrolling this area.
if anyone has local nypd. juice, can you report when these predators are behind bars?my friends will feel much safer at night.
This is close to the Ravenswood buildings somewhat close to Cost Co, or maybe between them and Queensbridge. Especially past 21st closer to 10th its good to avoid that but closer to Broadway the Ravenswood projects continue are not as bad.
Lets build condos by them within a block of this and make a reality TV show.
