You mean this isn't normal?

From the Brooklyn Paper:

Prospect Park was a victim of its own popularity during the July 4 weekend, as hundreds of illegal barbecuers set up camp.

We took some pictures, but when we rolled into the office on Monday, sure enough, our Inbox was filled with missives from Park Slopers who shared our concern that the borough was treating its emerald jewel like a toilet.

Are you trying to say that this isn't what goes on every weekend in Prospect Park?

Because in Queens parks...

Oh, never mind.

I have seen this nonsense even in upscale Oyster Bay, Long Island. Grilling in the formal rose garden in Planting Fields Arboretum.

Morons are on the march!

LOL! If those yuppies would only dare to venure into Queens, they would be horrified by Flushing Meadows! Anyone care for some roasted Guinea Pig?

What is the thrill of grilling at a park???

The thrill lies in getting out of the cramped apartment and into what they think is the Hamptons.

If you want to grill, Sunken Meadows park among others, provides grilling facilities. Go where grilling is okay instead of wrecking the joint.

Grilling is permitted in Prospect park, in designated areas. This winner is probably upset that more poor people are using "his" precious "upper-class" prospect park facilities. The economy is bad, probably many have decided to stay in the city rather than get away on the weekend, so more people are in the parks. BTW, I ate roasted Guinea Pig in a trip to Quito, it was not bad. Skin tasted a bit like pork skin and the rest was similar to dark chicken meat. In Ecuador they are farmed and a delicacy... apparently , it used to be the poor's man meat. Now, they are farmed as a business and pretty expensive.

Yeah, but that's the rub--designated areas. If you use any old area, you risk fire and destruction of trees.

In Astoria Park, grilling isn't allowed at all, and it is usually not allowed unless specifically permitted in areas with signs. The hot smoke kills off the vegetation and don't ask what embers can do if they are not properly extinguished.

You had it right in your first sentence, "Designated Areas", and then you completely contradicted yourself.

I ran through Central Park on Saturday, and saw some of the "vibrant and colorful" diversity camped out at the north end of Central Park with their barbeque grills.

Are you going to tell me that the hoi polloi should be allowed to simply set up camp and barbeque wherever they'd like? Why not let the Tweeders place their George Foreman grills in the flower beds? Maybe you'd like to organize a clean up crew afterwards?

I didn't think so......

End of discussion.....arrest the illegal barbecuers, and organize a public flogging.......

The animals do the same crap at Maurice Park too. It disgusts me because the next day the place looks like a total shit hole.

I guess it speaks to the point that you can't keep the boys from the grills.

well at least the boys are good for something... women need a break here and there..

You should check out the disaster taking place every weekend in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park around the lake. No law enforcement whatsoever!!!! The park has been turned into a dump!

That's why I can no longer take my friends to visit the park. What a shame. Who's fault is this affront? Where is the enforcement to prevent such violations of OUR properties? Instead of tax increases, we should get rebates!

The libs love all the "diversity",until it comes to their neighborhood! You asked/voted for it........now ya gotta live with it.

Wade, the "the" in "the hoi polloi" is redundant. "Hoi polloi" is Greek for "the many". "Hoi" is the Greek definite article. Using the extra English "the" is a common mistake.)

(Corrected version: Are you going to tell me that hoi polloi should...)

-----------------------------------
If the cops try to enforce the law, the violators will get bent out of shape, start a riot, and then the libs and the media will carry on about how the facist, minority hating cops just want to harass anyone having a good time. This is the backwards society we have created folks, welcome to it!

Georgethepedant, if you're going to insist on grammatical accommodation in importing foreign phrases, I don't ever want to hear you say (read you type?) anything stupid like "salsa sauce," not to mention silly English redundancies like "ATM machine" or "PIN number."

I don't recall George ever using those phrases. What bug crawled up your ass and died?

Ask me about "hieroglyphics". Go ahead, ask me.

The "hoi polloi" discussion (oh, a tweak to the/hoi redundancy sensitivities) has been as enlightening as an LED light. :)

it's amazing you can't go to any park without seeing a shit load of soccer players, now everyone is bbq'in, so when is the city going to step in and say something about the conditions they leave behind, where the hell is the green in this?

you should only bbq where it's permitted to.

George... no comments about Linda's chronically run-on sentences? Or is she a lost cause?

On topic: I have no problem with either soccer or barbecue, as long as you pick up after yourself(ves) and leave the place at least as nice as you found it.

lost cause, no way and listen smart ass it was at one time an enjoyment to go to the PARKS now it's one big soccer field, especially Flushing. Juniper Park got a football field and soccer controls that too. Prospect park is out of control with all the crap being left behind and now with cuts, lmao who will be cleaning it?? not the ones making the mess.
