Queens site eyed for soccer stadium

From the Daily News:

A new soccer franchise that hopes to build a stadium in Queens is eying a site in Jamaica, the Daily News has learned.

Officials from FC New York - an expansion team in the United Soccer League - are examining multiple sites across the borough for a 9,000-seat arena.

The team - which debuts in 2010 - has already committed to playing its first two seasons at Hofstra University. But team brass are eying a soccer-specific stadium by 2012.

"Our goal is to build a home in Queens," said Doug Petersen, president of FC New York. "We think it can happen relatively soon."

The team has discussed a potential site in Jamaica and is meeting with city Parks Department officials to explore other possibilities, Petersen said, noting he couldn't give more details about the location.

The ideal site would be near several train lines with ample parking, he said.

Any idea where specifically in Jamaica they're talking about? How big a piece of land would it require?

New York State Pavilion R.I.P

Maybe they'll build it on some (undeveloped) York College property in an agreement with CUNY, and the college will get to use it for athletic events when the team is not using it.

Wasn't Wilpon going to toss in a soccer stadium at Willets Point to sweeten that boondoggle?
