Solar panel field for former landfill?

From the Daily News:

A disused Rockaways landfill could soon be lighting up homes on the peninsula.

Local civic leaders have asked the Long Island Power Authority to install a solar panel field at the 118-acre Edgemere landfill along Jamaica Bay near Kennedy Airport — with waterfront access to park users.

The former dump was closed and remediated more than 15 years ago, and is now controlled by the Parks Department. The site handled 1,000 tons of garbage a day in 1987, according to published reports.

LIPA officials said they’re open to the idea and are prepared to sit down with local leaders to discuss it. Unlike most of New York City, the Rockaways are on the LIPA power grid.

That's my idea of a good use. No housing, no schools, no exposure to deadly chemicals. In fact, skip the park, just put the solar cells right in.

Don't expect a lot of energy out of this thing.

Now if the city would post the electrical output on the internet as is done in Europe.

WOW someone actually has an idea that will benefit the general public and LIPA likes it. I am amazed!

And you have an alternative suggestion?

only one choice if you want clean energy, nuclear.

on average you can expect about 250 watts/m^2 from solar. indian pt 2 and 3 are rated at 1,000 MW of steady stae power (remember what solar outputs at night, so you need backup).

to match even one reactor you'd need a solar array that is 5 million squar meters. thats asn array about 1 mile by 2 miles.
and if it rains or snows, no power.

if it scares you then goodle or bing on "pebble-bed reactor"

I agree with EW nuclear is the way to go but I cant really complain with having both

I only hope that the solar panels don't reflect badly on incoming planes at nearby JFK.

If only disposing of all of that nuclear waste4 wasn't such a problem!

yes, because a nuclear powerplant in nyc in the jfk flight path would be a great idea. what could possibly go wrong with that?

ROFLMAO - Exactly!!!!

Nobody is proposing one in NYC, although I suspect you are unaware of the nuclear reactors already located in the city?

Sadly most reactions to nuclear are based on emotion and not hard facts. The eco's and media have totally brainwashed people about nuclear power.

People need to understand that windmills, geothermal and solar can never provide more then a small fraction of what we need and that is due to the laws of physics and even congress can repeal them.

as to the dangers posed by nuclear waste see how it was handled at the old Yankee-Rowe plant.
