Comptroller Thompson is a Trekkie

From the NY Times:

...the truth is that the ever cool, collected and measured Mr. Thompson — a mayoral candidate whose job as New York’s fiscal watchdog often elicits puzzled (or bored) looks from voters — nurtures a secret passion: He’s crazy about “Star Trek.”

“You had space travel, you had planets, you had a guy like Spock, who was half human and half Vulcan, and you’re a 14-, 15-year-old kid sucking it all in,” he said, recalling the original 1966 television series. “It opened up new frontiers, and it made you think.” To call him a Trekkie would be an overstatement, Mr. Thompson said. “I don’t go to conventions or any stuff like that,” he said.

But his devotion to the show quickly became apparent when he flashed the Vulcan salute — hand raised, fingers parted in the middle and thumb extended to the side — while recalling the day he met Leonard Nimoy, who played the role of Mr. Spock in the original TV series and who plays an aged version of the character in the current feature film.

Thompson may be a Trekkie, but Scientologist Hiram Monserrate is waiting for his return trip in the big flying saucer--as soon as we can pry him off the cross.
