The AP didn't get the news....

Divers Search for Man Off Queens Coast

NEW YORK (AP) - Divers are searching for a man who disappeared in the waters off the Rockaway Peninsula in a mishap that also left a female swimmer in critical condition.

The hunt for the missing man in his mid 30s began at around 8:20 a.m. Saturday when dispatchers got an emergency call about two people in the water near Beach 9th Street and Seagirt Avenue in Queens.

A female was pulled from the water and taken to St. John's Queens Hospital. Authorities say she was either in her teens or early 20s.

The divers were searching in the East Rockaway Inlet.

I hope for the woman's sake that she was taken somewhere else...

Rockaway is dangerous, dangerous, dangerous. More people are drowned in the Rockaways than on any other area beach.

Never go in the water drunk. Never dip a toe into areas marked as off-limits, a vicious riptide can dump you on your ass and take you right out in ankle-deep water.

May God help the victims.

Searching for what? St. John's Hospital?

Let's lose the Commissar and all those who helped to close the two hospitals: Mary Immaculate and St. Johns.

We owe that much to all who lost their life because he couldn't care less.

September 15 primary: Dump him!

November 3 general Elections: Dump him if he's still clinging to life!

I think they are referring to St John's Episcopal in Far Rockaway.

They meant St john's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway.

And to the first commenter, the vast vast VAST majority of those drownings were after lifeguards were off duty and those "victims" went in knowing full well the risks.

It's pretty risky going in the Rockaways without life guards on duty. It's proven time and time again.

Many people are unaware of the dangers of shallow water. If you are a non-swimmer, deep means dangerous, neglecting the fact that shallow water is where necks and backs are broken. Also, it does not matter how shallow the water if your balance is upset by currents and you are dragged further in.

Never play games with Rockaway. I have been going there since I was 3 years of age and I never enter the water without asking lifeguards what surf conditions are like.

Never mind the fact that I am experienced surf swimmer and spend time on Fire Island and Jones Beach were currents are even worse.

Sadly, many local reporters are new to our city, and still do not have a strong knowledge of neighborhoods and geography. The AP is better for global news, but not local occurences.
