800 geese dead, 1200 more to go...

From the NY Post:

About 800 Canada geese have been trapped and gassed around New York City's two airports in an effort to reduce the kinds of bird strikes that led to the ditching of a jetliner in the Hudson River last winter.

Birds have been culled from 15 sites within five miles of LaGuardia and Kennedy airports.

U.S. Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Carol Bannerman says agency biologists and other specialists are trapping and euthanizing the birds. Officials plan to kill 2,000 geese within weeks.

So Mayor Bloomberg, the guy with the world's most innovative ideas, doesn't have a problem with killing living things. He could have called GeesePeace whose strategies are non-lethal. But no... let's just start the bird massacre.

"If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men." - St. Francis of Assisi

AIN'T IT THE TRUTH?

Has anyone told this Mama Luke Mayor that maybe the geese help our ecosystem? I thought this pompous a** was pro environmental? Another Bloomie lie.

This story makes me very sad.

Where is PETA and the Humane Society? We need you!

EUTHANIZE BLOOMBERG

it is true that those that have no compassion for animals also have no compassion for people. Bloomberg proves this statement 100%

GeogetheAsshole, they feel pain as we all do and they love life more than some people. if you can't understand that then it is you that should be gassed.

I bow to your vaunted wisdom. You must be an animal. Take it up with Voltaire.

The persistant rainfall we have been experiencing are, perhaps, the tears of St. Francis himself.

I include mine.

You can judge a man (or woman) by the way they treat their creatures.

Bloomberg and his minions will be provided with a tortuous calamity of conscience during their own final hours.

Thus is the balance of Karma within our sacred universe.

Does St. Francis fly coach or first (Maybe Business) class?

The big problem with this is that it is a waste of time and money. The gassing won't make a bit of difference because other geese will immediately fly in to replace them.

Ongoing predation, such as an established hunting season for Canada Geese, Harassment by other animals such as dogs or bird-eating hawks, reduction of feeding grounds and nesting grounds by planting trees or allowing grass to get taller and other methods might keep them down.

Not to mention that other birds such as gulls, of which we have in abundance can also down planes.

I certainly wish I had been a goose.

Harresment of these bird (flying rats) do work well but need time. A continious comprehensive plan to maintain culling the birds in a human way is neccessarry for the success of any plan. But do we want to experience more jet episode just as the US Air flight in Jan?

Queens Crapper said...

The ones on the ground did not cause the problem in January. They were geese from elsewhere that were migrating through. This is what people don't seem to understand. The geese here permanently hardly fly at all and not at altitudes that would have caused a plane to come down.

Now having said that, even if there had not been a plane accident, we should be employing some kind of method of goose population control because as you can see from the photo, they can have many young each year and the population expands exponentially in a short period of time.

Vas you dere, Sharlie?

Didn't have to be. DNA testing proved it.

This makes me really, really sad.

Crapper, good read on the migratory vs residential goose DNA link.

Peter Marra of the Smithsonian's Migratory Bird Center who was quoted in the article said "Resident birds near airports MAY [my emphasis] be managed by population reduction, habitat modification, harassment or removal." It seems from his language that he possibly advocates that the residential birds NOT be there.

Italian "girl". Did you weep similarly for Obama's fly kill?

He viciously gloated "got that sucker". (Showing his Chicago street thuggery.)

No because flies are disgusting insects that love sh@# and corpses. Too bad it was only one fly that he got.
