North Flushing landmarking nixed

There will be a rally at Bowne Park this Sunday at 10am with Councilman Avella and the Broadway-Flushing Homeowners Association. (Note the earlier time.)

PLEASE TAKE NOTE:

THE RALLY TIME WAS CHANGED TO
10:00 AM...10:00 AM...10:00 AM !

This is outrageous! There's no good reason why they shouldn't landmark that beautiful area.

Anonymous said...

That's strange...when LPC's
chief of research Mary Beth Betts first toured our neighborhood with Councilman Avella and several BFHA officers, she seemed to find it very deserving of becoming a municipal historic distict.

Now we have a sudden reversal...
a refusal to calendar a public hearing.

Could it have been that since Councilman Avella was seeking one million dollars additional funding for the LPC, at that time, that Ms. Betts was merely buttering him up with the idea of districting Broadway/Flushing and dumping
on us afterwards?

This is yet another example of a staff decision from the LPC without it first reaching the eyes of itscommissioners.

Deja vu...the tail wags the dog
once again!

The LPC has become an acronym
for LAZY PARTNERS in CRIME.

They are the new accomplices
in the destruction of the historic neighborhoods that they're supposed to be protecting!

Here's the poop "Italian Girl":

#1. The LPC is forever complaining that it has "limited" resources.

#2. Therefore, as the evidence clearly shows, they are to be used mainly in Manhattan's tourist corridor or for pandering to accommodate it's more upscale influential neighborhoods.

#3. They do not want to burden themselves by taking on anything major in Queens like another large district of detached suburban homes...being notoriously biased towards favoring row housing.

Note:After Douglas Manor an LPC spokesperson was overheard mentioning that, "...they would never do that again..."!

#4. Our borough is reserved strictly for token designations
like firehouses and public WPA era swimming pools. Sunnyside Gardens got through because it's row housing!

#5. The last time some serious money was offered by the city to the LPC to improve their efficiency, Chairman Tierney declined (I believe it was at a council hearing) saying that, "...they didn't need it..."!

Conclusion:

The LPC is deliberately being kept
understaffed by the Bloomberg administration so that they can feel free to capriciously apply their mysterious "criteria" to designate ONLY THOSE already protected neighborhoods that need little protection to begin with.

THAT'S WHY QUEENS IS #4 ON THE LIST
of the number of individual landmmarks and historic districts it possesses when compared to the other four boroughs in New York City!

LANDMARKING MIGHT INTERFERE WITH THE OVER DEVELOPMENT AGENDA of
Mayor Mike's real estate pals
for this area!

Has Broadway/Flushing been red-lined?

Perhaps!

Anonymous said...

Take heed Ms. Manley and the other
Community Assistance Unit representatives and REMIND Mayor Bloomberg
that there's approximately a 2,000
resident voting block in this area!

We'll be polite but will turn up the heat, if necessary because IT'S OUR NEIGHBORHOOD and we intend to fight to the death for it!

If you red-line us by denying us our deserving historic district, we'll black-list you or your fellow candidates at the polls!

Enough said!

Jerry:
Yeah, but what overdevelopment are they going to accomplish if the area is zoned R1-2 and soon to be rezoned R1-2A, in other words single family homes? They won't be packing people in, in this area.

Anonymous said...

The architectural beauty of Broadway/Flushing can still be destroyed with tear downs (already in progress throughout the area) replaced by brick boxes built to the maximum allawable FAR (floor area ratio) even under Broadway's existing R1-2 premiere quality zoning!

i.e.
Take a good look at the southwest corner of 165th Street and 35th Ave.

THAT'S OVER DEVELOPMENT.
It doesn't have to be a four family project.

Would you like to live overshadowed next door to one of these Mc Monsters "Italian Girl"?

Take a gander at what's happening in Little Neck Hills (south of Northern Boulevard) to glimpse a view of an ugly future.

"Mc Malba" pales by comparison!

Anonymous said...

I was about to answer your question, "Italian Girl" but "anonymous" just beat me to it.

Bravo annoymous!

Anonymous said...

Oops...pardon the typo.

Anonymous said...

Anon:

I get what you're saying. But at least they are zoned for single family homes. I understand some of them have been replaced by repulsive boxes. I saw a box on 161st Street andd 33rd Ave. Disgusting. But at the very least, you will never have a four- family next door to you. Try being zoned R-4 when all the homes are single family detached and should have been zoned R-2, like on my block.

Anonymous said...

VARIANCES...
can always be obtained
by a connected developer despite the R1-2A zoning, "Italian Girl".

It's called favoritism/blockbusting!

Yeah...I know about those prized Rickert-Finley covenants.

They cost a bundle to enforce.

Anonymous said...

I sympathize with you "Italian Girl".
I live in an R-4 zone too.

Broadway residents might seem a bit spoiled (ha, ha) but their issue is LANDMARKING and, as the drawing demonstrates, they've been deftly screwed by the LPC!

Anonymous said...

Hopefully a lot of people get out to Bowne Park on Sunday to make a lot of noise about this. Broadway/Flushing is beautiful and should be protected.

Anonymous said...

Agreed..."Italian Girl".

Those Broadway babies had better learn to throw
away their polite tea-time manners and raise hell (even on The Lord's Day)!

This nabe is being tested
by Mayor Bum-berg's favorite finger puppets the Tierney/Betts team at the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission!

If they don't scream loud enough...their wheel won't get oiled.

BFHA has suffered a little under its "don't make any waves" leadership policy.

Times have changed and so should a neighborhood's defense tactics.

This area is, perhaps, no longer a favorite child of NYC the way it used to be in by-gone days!

It might well become a step child
in the near future unless the association learns to step up its game!

Anonymous said...

"If they don't scream loud enough...their wheel won't get oiled."

I totally agree with that. Nothing ever gets accomplished by being "nice" and writing polite letters and holding toned-down rallies.

Broadway/Flushing:

Get nasty! Shame Bloomberg and LPC. At the very least, you'll cost Bloomie some votes. He won't like that. You know I think a lot of people around the city aren't happy with what's become of their neighborhoods, but don't realize WHO exactly is responsible. They probably think it's all the developer's fault.
Expose that little shrimpy Bloomberg.

Anonymous said...

Methinks that this might be some sort of retribution against Tony Avella's efforts to protect his constituency. Could be a tactic by those who want to diminish his power and influence as his mayoral campaign begins to take off. Any thoughts?

TONY AVELLA FOR MAYOR!!!

Anonymous said...

Of course part of it has to do with Avella's candidacy.

The rest of it has to do with
with those mendicant snobby bastards at the LPC's and their inborn laziness!

Despite their recent ballyhooing regarding paying more attention to Queens, they're still Manhattan-centric
when it comes to deciding which site(s) get landmarked (followed by Brooklyn...then on down the line)!

So Queens remains a 4th rate borough in their eyes.

Wake up Bumbling Bob Tierney.

Our borough casts a lot of votes not to mention the total taxes we pay to GREATER NEW YORK CITY!

New York City stopped being
composed only of New York County (Manhattan) around 1898 or so
after the great consolidation.

AND WAKE THE F--K ALL OF YOU QUEENS VOTERS.

Stop believing all the clubhouse drivel you've been accepting as Gospel all these years from your crooked pols!

Donald Manes was only the tip of the corrupt political iceberg.

Look below the water line to find out who your local crook is!

Mc Laughlin is giving up most of them to the FBI right now.
More will tumble soon.

I hope those "staunch" Stavisky's wind up in the net!

Anonymous said...

I think it's very odd that after the unanimous vote of CB#7 to support the creation of this municipal landmark district...support from Helen Marshal, Historic Districts Council, (I believe) Queens Civic Congress, yadda, yada, yadda...
as well as the national & state
register designations that LPC has the damn gall to ignore this important nabe and toss it aside.

SOMEBODY'S
TRYING TO PULL SOME STRINGS!

I wonder who that might be...
Bloomberg?

Any other ideas out there?

Anonymous said...

I hope that the CAU is paying some very special attention to these comments as we know they usually are (judging by where the URLs originate from) and get on the stick real quick to "hizzoner".

THIS AIN'T GONNA GO AWAY 'TIL WE'RE LANDMARKED!

IF WE FAIL TO GAIN SUCH STATUS,
WE'LL TAKE ALL THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR STANDING IN THE WAY DOWN WITH US!

WE'LL NEVER FORGET THOSE WHO SCREWED US...ESPECIALLY COME ELECTION TIME!

what role can hdc play in any of this?

what role can hdc play in any of this?

LIPSERVICE, THEN WITH A SMIRK, TEL YOU TO WORK WITH YOU LOCAL COMMUNITY BOARD AND ELECTED OFFICIAL

EVERYONE HAS KNOWN FOR YEARS THE PLAYING FIELD IS UNEVEN AND NO ONE HAS DONE A THING ABOUT IT.

LOOK AT HDC'S CONF LAST YEAR - WHAT DID THEY THING WAS THE MOST PRESSING THING?

HOSTILE PRESS? THE CLUBHOUSE PUBLICLY STRADDLING THE FENCE AS THEY SOWED DISSENTION? OUT OF CONTROL DEVELOPERS SPREADING LIES SECURE THAT THEY WILL NEVER BE CHALLANGED BY THE PRESERVATION COMMUNITY?

HELL NO.

BASICALLY AN EXERCISE ON HOW TO LIVE WITH DEVELOPMENT.

OK TOPIC IF YOU LIVE IN BROOKLYN HEIGHTS: WHAT HAVE YOU TO LOSE?

PERFECTLY USELESS FOR THE REST OF US WHO LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD

THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THE MANHATTAN BASED PRESERVATION GROUPS NOT ONLY HOG ALL THE RESOURCES, BUT TIME AND AGAIN HAVE PULLED THE RUG OUT FROM THE REST OF US.

CANNOT GET TOO MANY PLACES LANDMARKD: THEY WOULD HAVE TO SHARE THE WEALTH AND LOSE SOME CACHE.

Anonymous said...

They can raise the issue in their newsletter for beginners...which I think they are!

They can also climb on the LPC's ass
and bugger them with criticism 'till they bleed!

Then, lobby, lobby, lobby for that's their job.

What else do you think they should be doing?

Anonymous said...

So Jerry, have you shared your concerns with HDC?

What have they done about it?

Anonymous said...

Are you talking to me Bob
or some other Jerry?

You've got my phone number so call me
for I'll not waste any time bantering with you at our more serious readers expense.

10-4...over & out!

Yawn still bitching and moaning about HDC... the preservation community's inactivity (yawn) etc.?

Gee, the preservation community seems to be responsible for everything from the war in Iraq to the crucifixion.

Somebody must have finished their taxes or took a posting break.

No need for cap letters in your posts. Our eyesight is good!

If they didn't know about this "pretty serious stuff" before they certainly would know about it now if the read Queens Crap!

Anonymous said...

Read HDC's mission statement
regarding their purpose and stop wasting our time with side issues!

Maybe "coffee talks" (ha, ha).

The point I think you're trying to make is that the NYC real estate industry has ICBMs targeting
the more anemic six shooter armed preservation groups.

What do you want them to do?

I'd say AIM VERY CAREFULLY!

Anonymous said...

Let's backtrack a few years.

It was HDC who sued the LPC for holding closed meetings.

I believe that HDC won the case.

But the LPC merely stopped holding those closed committee meetings or maybe now they're held in Sri Lanka.

Nevertheless, they seemed to have found another way around it.

The landmarks law is full of holes and the staff doesn't give a damn what goes on past the west side of the East River.

Queens is slated for "development"
and Bloomberg's simpatico with this. Remember "Plan 2030".

The buck stops right at his door!

Anonymous said...

Ha, ha, ha.
Attend one of HDC's expensive conferences to support
them paying their high rent in Manhattan.

Why can't they move to an "outer borough" as an austerity measure?

We're all living in tough times.

Anonymous said...

H-m-m-m....it seems that ALL of the preservation wardens are located on Manhattan isle from MAS to HDC to the NYC Landmarks Conservancy.

I think it has more to do with Manhattan being in the hub of the public transportation wheel making it easier for ALL to have access to them.

Or is it something else?

The preservation organizations left to us in Queens are toothless tigers incapable of knowing which end to wipe without printed instructions on each sheet of toilet paper.

Yes, like it or not, historic preservation seems to be a Manhattan monopoly!

Queens is indeed a builders paradise and Landmark's stepchild!

Amen!

Anonymous said...

READ THE LPC's MISSION STATEMENT
or READ THE LAW ITSELF.

Maybe the webmaster can provide
an updated link to this.(Thanks
in advance).

You'll find that the landmarks commission was set up primarily to protect the MANHATTAN tourist corridor.

Either you amend that law or repeal it.

It's discriminatory since
IT IS NOT BEING EQUALLY ADMINISTERED in all 5 boroughs of NYC!

Anonymous said...

Queens IS NOT receiving its due process under this current law!

Anonymous said...

it seems that both hdc and lpc are completely worthless.
both organizations should stop paying us all lipservice and shut the f- up. both of you pretty much suck

Anonymous said...

The LPC isn't worthless when it comes to accommodating the NYC real estate industry's agenda.

Certain nabes have carte blanche when it comes to receiving the lion's share of landmark designations at the expense of the other remaning nabes.

So the "haves" get more at the "have-nots'" expense....like the rich get richer while the poor get bum f----d.

Commissar Bloomberg understands this all too very well!

Anonymous said...

"So the "haves" get more at the "have-nots'" expense....like the rich get richer while the poor get bum f----d."

Isn't this always the case time and time again?
I wish I was rich.
:(

Anonymous said...

LPC can spin it any way they choose but the numbers tell it all:

Queens is still #4...way down on their list!

And why is that?

Because its voters are still sucking up to the clubhouse candidates who receive BIG CAMPAIGN DONATIONS FROM DEVELOPERS!

I.e. those damned Stavisky double dealers!

They prattle being the peoples'
representative but they're owned by the real estate industry!

Anonymous said...

"Italian Girl" I wish that my Italian forebears were Sicilian.

They knew how to deal with crooked
lying trash (oops...only kidding...no violence intended).

H-m-m-m...and yet the prospect of taking the Tierney/Betts duo for that
proverbial "ride" is amusingly intriguing!

I wish this neighborhood luck. I've lived to see almost all of "Old Astoria" destroyed within the last 5 years because we could not get landmarked status. These were beautiful buildings, pre-civil war. Garbage now, and some of the new buildings may be left unfinished or as empty lots.

Yawn...Tony...
was it wise to hold a press conference at 10:00 AM
on Sunday morning?

I hope everyone

Anonymous said...

GOOD MORNIN' VIET ...oops...BROADWAY/FLUSHING!

Get yer ass over to Bowne Park!

Anonymous said...

Apparently the Tierney/Betts team
at the LPC has decided that there have been "too many inappropriate alterations" on homes in our area since they were last out here, which they feel disqualifies us for historic districting.

NOT SO...ONLY A HAND FULL!

Had those slugs moved faster
this would not have happened.

It's all part of their plan folks!

You just keep on being "polite 'n positive" my fellow homeowners while many more homes get "inappropriately altered".

Then the LPC will find themselves fully justified in restating their original opinion of
"NO DISTRICT FOR YOU" once again!

LPC is playing a time game with us!

Anonymous said...

And City Planning pulled the same crap. By waiting so long to rezone North Flushing(and I'm sure other areas), they were unable to give certain blocks the downzoning they wanted because too many homes on that block had been converted to multifamily.

No R2 for you!
