Night lights peeve the Doorman

From the Daily News:

Turn out the lights already!

Some city government buildings still blaze brightly well past midnight nearly two years after the Daily News exposed the wasteful practice, City Councilman Eric Gioia said.

He found that about 25% to 70% of the lights in the...buildings were burning well past midnight.

Now I'm all for cutting waste and conserving energy, but I believe the night hours are when the offices are cleaned. Is housekeeping supposed to vacuum in the dark?

Not a bad idea and should extend to all building in NY - why waste energy in any building - the code should address this in new-builds - install lighting with motion sensors that turn off light after 10 minutes of no motion - extremley sensitve - work very well. Put these in your home - say the basement, garage and hallways.

Well...Gioia's a dim bulb himself so Eric doesn't want to be outshone!

Dump that dork already!

Let Crowley's clubhouse find themselves a new lackey!

anything for publicity... does this guy do anything else but complain?

Somebody get the hook and get this guy off the stage. What a media whore. Can't wait for the voters to "Turn The Lights Out" on his Political Career. Glad he has his Doorman Experience to fall back on! Please vote this guy out on Election Day!!!!

Regardless of who put this out there (I may not like the source either) I agree that this is a serious issue, just as it is in my home. I know that in the building I work in it is impossible to turn off many of the overhead fluorescents except at the fuse box. There are no switches on the wall.
Cleaning needs to take place, but a cleaner is in one office at a time, one area at a time, one floor at a time. and we know all lights are burning. When the cleaners are done, there is now way to "put the office to bed." There should be a night mode.

I agree with the first commenter--motion sensors make sense. If half the lights were turned off $$ would be saved. Who pays the electric bills anyway? And why are there rules/laws for homeowners on everything, and no rules for big corporations, Mr. Mike Bizburg? Follow the goddammn money.

Sorry, with sleeping guards in many buildings, I would be very nervous cleaning an office that's only lit where I am working.

true Gioia is quite dim.

Hire me to work during the night. Excellent time for word processing, proofreading and other tasks that are time sensitive. I promise to pay taxes on the wages too.

Gioia -- The dimmest bulb in the box.

Sorry, I must disagree on this one, Crappy.

They don't clean ALL night. Anyone who works in a large office knows there are always people who "own stock in Con Ed" as my parents used to say. I've got some sick assholes in my office who leave lights on deliberately, just because they know it annoys us "tree huggers."

In my office we've even climbed up on furniture to remove some of the fluorescent bulbs because the lighting is so excessive.

This is actually the kind of stupid waste I'd like to see City Council members bitching about but they need to stay on it rather than moving on to a new topic the next day.

Now if only Eric would bitch about homeowners who don't shovel...

I thought that Eric couldn't fall asleep without wetting the bed if he didn't have a night light in his room!
