Why Queens is the way it is

State Senator-elect Hiram Monserrate was greeted like a king Tuesday in Corona.

Children lined the block to collect a toy from his annual Three Kings Day giveaway and by constituents who said their allegiance to him isn't wavering in the face of assault charges.

"The community here is more than 100 percent behind him and we will support him. We will not allow to lose Hiram Monserrate to this community," said one supporter.

Support for Monserrate Remains Strong Despite Allegations

Give away free shit and folks will support you, no matter how heinous an act you commit - even if it's on video!

Corona just took an IQ test and failed.

Stop insulting our intelligence.

Stop wasting our time.

Throw Monserrate in the clink.

It's the unfortunate underbelly of ethnic politics that nobody dares mention.

By the convoluted "logic" of ethnic identity politics, all Latinos should automatically support Fidel Castro, all blacks must support Robert Mugabe, all Germans must still revere Hitler, etc. etc.

Never mind that these are all repugnant people, as long as they are "one of us", "we" MUST support them!

Good God!

Even the "Burger King Guy" in the background supports Monster-Rat!

I hope Ronald McDonald has some integrity!

Time to bring back those lines from the Gangs of New York. I always felt the machine is the power behind all this ethnic identity politics - keeps us divided:

Boss Tweed: That's the building of our country right there, Mr. Cutting. Americans aborning.
Bill the Butcher: I don't see no Americans. I see trespassers, Irish harps. Do a job for a nickel what a nigger does for a dime and a white man used to get a quarter for. What have they done? Name one thing they've contributed.
Boss Tweed: Votes.

Boss Tweed: The appearance of law must be upheld, especially when it's being broken.

Boss Tweed: We're burying a lot of votes tonight.

Boss Tweed: Remember the first rule of politics. The ballots don't make the results, the counters make the results. The counters. Keep counting

Boss Tweed: You may or may not know, Bill, that everyday I go down to the waterfront with hot soup for the Irish as they come ashore. Its part of building a political base.

Killoran: Monk's already won by three thousand more votes than there are voters.
Boss Tweed: Only three? Make it twenty, thirty. We don't nee a victory. We need a Roman triumph.

[as Monk McGinn runs for Sheriff]
Boss Tweed: That man was right born for this.
Amsterdam Vallon: He's killed 44 men, and laid low a couple hundred more.
Boss Tweed: Is that right? We should have run him for mayor.

Boss Tweed: Bill, I can't get a days work done for all the good citizens coming in here to harass me about crime in the Points. Some even go so far as to accuse Tammany of connivance in this so-called rampant criminality. What am I to do? I can't have this. Something has to be done.
Bill: What do you have in mind?
Boss Tweed: I don't know. I think maybe we should hang someone.

Boss Tweed: You're a good one for the fighting, Bill. But you can't fight forever.
Bill: I can go down doing it.
Boss Tweed: And you will!
Bill: What did you say?
Boss Tweed: I said, you're turning your back on the future.
Bill: Its not our future.

Typical third world politics.

Where are the leaders of the latino community? Why dont they cut this stinking corpse off from their community?

Do they understand that stuff like this makes them a laughing stock?

Certainly explains why everytime the words "Queens Politican" is mentioned there are snickers across the room.

Thanks clubhouse!

Unfortunately this is part of the fatalism that is prominent in the Latin American community. They leave it to God to find a solution to the problems they see rather than taking an active role to solve them. It isn't a completely negative perspective to have, but it does keep the population down.

Here you have an example of a man representing a largely Latin American population (South American/Mexican background) but whose background and ethnicity is Caribbean. It is much more common for Dominicans and somewhat Puerto Ricans (more so for Nuyoricans)to become politically active...unfortunately those that seek to be politically active are very assimilated to American society and cannot really understand the plight of the population they represent.

If someone from Latin American or Mexican descent who is second generation would go far if they represent this population. Unfortunately, the first generation legal immigrant turned citizens are too busy working for their children, the second generation is likely to be middle to upper middle class but they are happy where they are to be concerned about politics, the third generation is usually relatively well off and interested in politics because of the prestige it brings and also sees the hispanic/latin american last name as an advantage--unfortunately this generation is too removed to understand the needs of the population they want to represent.

Miles...thanks for reminding me...I have to find the "Plunkitt of Tammany Hall".Read it years ago but could use a refresher...Great Quotes! G...I have to agree with the majority of what you said..By "second generation" do you mean "first generation" born here in the U.S.? It really saddens me that people in this communtiy are not informed about their reps. I have taken to reading up on the candidates for District 21, and honestly, none of them seem fit to represent this district. Yeah, the same old rhetoric- "I will fight to improve yada yada yada." when there are no improvements, unfortunately

Why hasn't someone questioned the fact that the MonsterRat doesn't have any bandages on his right hand. If the glass shattered so badly, that the girlfriend had to get 20 stiches, doesnn't it seem likely that he'd have some damage too. Very interesting.!!!

Not only toys does he give out, but free trips to the hospital too.
