From the Brooklyn Eagle:
The huge $64 million Coney Island Performing Arts Center amphitheater that has been hailed as a significant enhancement for the popular outdoor concerts at Asser Levy-Seaside Park and a major concert venue for Brooklyn is also being questioned as a waste of money and destroyer of the parkland.
“What — $64 million for this?” said environmental activist Ida Sanoff, who lives near the park and is a former Community Board 13 member. “Why put a commercial venue in the midst of a residential community, bringing traffic jams? Our libraries and school programs are being cut. It will take away parkland and bring more noise. We don’t need this expensive plastic potato chip here!”

Enough with the post-modern pseudo-intellectual architecture already. I've had it with those eyesores that are passed off as civic art and pinnacle of architectural thought.
Damn....if it doesn't really look like a giant Lay's potato chip!
And it looks like the community's sure gonna get laid in the process!
At least Boro Prez Marty
sees some benefit in the idea of an amphitheater.
We had one...once upon a time in Queens...Billy Rose's "Aquacade".
But that Manes stooge
"granny" Shulman insisted on
tearing it down.
And instead of putting that bovine
out to pasture, the clubhouse rewards her with a golden parachute
a Willets Point Directorship!
Yawn....at least in "Crooklyn" they can boast having a higher class of corrupt officials!
I can guarantee you that the cost of the $64 million dollars to build this 110 foot tall building, will balloon up to over $ 75 million or even $100 million dollars once they get going. Mr. Markowitz did a really BAD job with the new Parachute Jump. It cost over $ 4 million dollars & now they are going to change the lighting for a mere $ 1 million dollars more. In addition, although the Summer Concerts are FREE Now, they won't be after they build the new Marty Markowitz Vanity Amphitheater. It will be run by a PRIVATE Concession. So you better be prepared to dig deep into your pockets. If Jones Beach Amphitheater is any indication some tickets go for as much as $75 each. Under these dire economic conditions it is a travesity for Marty to spend OUR TAXPAYER MONEY when the current Amphitheater suits the community just fine.
Leave our park alone. The perfect place for this (if anywhere) would be the empty lots in Coney Island.
People in the hi-rise buildings cant get out of their parking lots with the Thurs nite concerts during the summer because of traffic. They will not stand for this kind of venue in their neighborhood.
Marty is already smarting from the Atlantic Yards reduction, so he's aiming his ambitions at the less affluent Brighton Beach. Hopefully the voters will toss the Big Bird out of office.s
Leave our park alone.Go play somewhere else.We have enough problems with traffic. Will Marty be the next Blagojevich.
lEAVE IT TO THE POLITCIANS!
THEY KNOW HOW TO ADVANCE THEIR ASPIRATIONS.(TO THEIR ADVANTAGE. I REMBER WHEN THIS WAS SUGGESTED IT WAS GOING TO BE A 39 MILLION BOONDOGGLE AND LOOK AT THE ESTIMATE COST NOW IN LESS THAN TWO YEARS
mONUMENTS TO PEOPLE BELONG IN CEMETARIES.
Here's a solution- if Marty wants to hold concerts in Coney Island, he should use the Cyclones' ballpark instrad. Do more with less.
