Second Sunday panel discussion this week at the Noguchi Museum, called “Long Island City, The Northern Edge: Its Future.” Along with Alyson Baker, executive director of Socrates, other panelists included Richard Maltz, a principal of the local real estate firm Greiner-Maltz; John Young, director of the Department of City Planning in Queens, and moderator Donald Elliot, a Noguchi Museum trustee and former chairman of the city Planning Commission.

Young, of the Queens DOP, also brought a positive outlook to the panel, summarizing his agency’s Astoria rezoning project, creating “more orderly and predictable ways for the community to grow and evolve.”

Members of the Cultural Alliance, according to Baker, want to see that intersection of artistic and industrial uses to remain a part of the neighborhood.

An undercurrent to the panel discussion was fear that the area will become the next and last arts enclave in the city to fall prey to the dulling affects of gentrification. The stakes for artists couldn’t be higher. “What we don’t want is to see artists moving to other cities,” Baker said.

Mighty John Young of Dutch Kills fame is looking at the area from Steinway to the river, and Broadway to Ditmars.

As the locals are getting a bit restive watching their community sink from development, its time to organize public opinion and nip these things in the budy.

Hold some wennie roasts, get the community board ready to sing the chorus, crank up the printing presses for a frenzy of pro development blather, and kiss Astoria goodby.

Oh yes, the community at large knows jack shit about this.

The thing that bothers me is the incestuous relationship between LICCA and the developers.

They seem to have infested it to the exclusiong of the community.

Check out their boards - Suna, Aquisto, the whole gang of 'em.

I espeically like handing out developer literature on public park property at events.

CB1 the community board from hell.

Ive been waiting for Q.C. to cover the rezoned piece of garbage on 21st and 30th ave condo going up fast thats sure to cause some tension because theres lots of home owners right next door and down the block. That street needs more traffic from condo dwellers like Hunters Point needs more sanitized culture from development.
Remember people who buy or rent condo's in that area, the Astoria house projects are five blocks away.

So? Obama is now President. You should WANT to live in the Astoria Projects.

post on astorians.com and demand that that stop throwing off people that are anti-development.

do the developers have to hijack everthing, the community boards, the politicans, the newspapers, now the art groups?

if these groups are supported by tax payer monies, then they should serve the interests and needs of the communities they are resident in.

If you have evidence of this post it on Crap.

This is illegal if it happened at Socrates this they should be fined - this should not happen on any public property.

Sort of explains why Greenshores is interested in that godforsaken Con Ed site and acts clueless when it comes to the prime waterfront.

And what the hell is that supposed to mean?
Really, was there any cerebral activity behind that utterance?

george, you always make the most sense when you stick to your script:

What are you trying to babble.Whatever Obama may do even though hes no "savior" is going to be at least a honest attempt to create jobs in this gutted country from bush, and cheney playing war oil games spending 10 billion a month to plunder oil so they can prop up their new puppet in Mesopotamia.Millions of Iraqis dead, soilders wrecked for private U.S. company profit. That debt is going to take 50 years to pay off.Thats a crime there rand George.

Are you guys from astorians.com where, when the local talent is held accountable, some hack diverts discussion to the color of the Hell Gate Bridge?

The hijacking by developers of the waterfront cultural groups from the community is something that Crappy will be looking at in the future.

"Gutted country from Bush"? Au contraire, mon frere. "Gutted country from the Dems" who pandered and promoted shyster mortgages to the PREDATORY BUYERS.
("Me flip McDonald hamburger, me now buy house.")

The Clintonian Ownership Society.

Thank you Vice-President Cheney for keeping Anonymous' red ass safe.

HANDS OFF GITMO!!!!

Don't hold your breath waiting for the day when the borrowers are more sophisticated than the lenders. These crooked mortgages occurred because the originators felt that they could sell the paper to another victim and sidestep the risk. Wall Street brokers then took the lousy paper and engineered a few derivatives--just to amp up the risk a little more.

This is similar to the shenanigans that cause our last Depression and the cure will be the same--separate the various types of financial institutions, regulate the hell out of the industry and cut off a few heads.

What you be talkin' about? Your buddy georgethepig diverted this discussion from Broadway to Obama through his sheer idiocy.

george, seriously. You need to lay off the gas-huffing. This makes no sense whatsoever. What in assaultrifleownership's name are PREDATORY BUYERS???

And I take it you never eat at McDonalds, because you sure don't appreciate the people who work there.

The Clintonian Ownership Society.

Uh, that was Bush, you tinkle-head.

Thank you Vice-President Cheney for keeping Anonymous' red ass safe. HANDS OFF GITMO!!!!

Cheney can't even keep his own ass safe. Did you see him in that wheelchair? Hilarious!

Not surprising that hope and change has arrived and that Queens morons are still dwelling on Bush. I predict this will continue for at least a decade or so.

The Ownership Society?

Started under Clinton's Secretary of Housing & Urban Development Andrew Cuomo.

Predatory buyers are Tweeded people who shouldn't be buying a house since they can't afford it.

You see, it is the Democrats' fault.

You don't seem to understand the basic meaning of the word "predatory." That's okay, george, you're still smarter than 60% of the commenters here.

You see, it is the Democrats' fault.

Yes, yes... that's right, little georgie.
Have a cookie and some warm milk, and after you go beddy-by the adults will talk about serious matters.

"Predatory buying".

If you weren't an obvious high school drop-out, you'd have learned about "poetic license".
