Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez integrated an environmental awareness event with a campaign fundraiser

NY Post

Her new deal is all about the green, alright.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez held a 5k in Queens Saturday that she billed as “a Family Fun Run supporting U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal on the Saturday following Earth Day.”

But many of the 400 runners didn’t realize their $30 registration fees were going directly into the lawmaker’s campaign coffers.

“We’re getting together for our own health, for our planet’s health … and to fight for the Green New Deal together,” the freshman Democrat told the participants before they set off.
Environmentally conscious supporters — who jogged through Astoria Park alongside a beaming, strolling AOC — believed their money was going to help save the planet.

“It’s going to help raise awareness and educate people,” a female runner told The Post.

“I think it’s really for this particular New Green Deal,” said Brian Schwartz of Long Island. “No question.”

“It’s to help the environment. To support the Green New Deal,” another woman said. “It’s a good cause.”

A vaguely worded notices on AOC’s Facebook page — saying that the run would support “U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez & the Green New Deal” — worsened the confusion.
But the fine print on a third event-related website revealed the truth.

“Registration fees are contributions to AOC for Congress,” reads the legal disclosure on aoc5k.com, which lists the Federal Election Commission rules that donors must follow.

“It was a campaign fundraiser,” Ocasio-Cortez spokesman Corbin Trent confirmed.

The participants paid more than $11,000 all told.

Even kids as young as 3 became unknowing political donors — ponying up $20 fees to join a kids’ 1k.

But by fudging the fact that those fees were actually campaign contributions, AOC may have enticed constituents into inadvertently breaking federal election laws.

Parents, for example, can’t contribute their own funds in a child’s name.

 Then there's this:

Anthony Pappas, the 72-year-old Republican who ran against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in November, shadowed the freshman Democrat at an Astoria Park event Saturday – and had to be shooed away by cops when he got too close.

Pappas, a professor at St. John’s University, was distributing stapled copies of an eight-page manifesto about his grievances against the judicial system, including complaints about unfair sentencing and a lack of accountability for judges, and ranting to passersby.

Staffers blocked him from approaching Ocasio-Cortez as she took selfies with supporters at the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 5k “fun run.”

“I wanted to tell her about judicial immunity and judicial accountability,” Pappas told The Post, after two police officers guided him away from AOC and her group. She did not seem to acknowledge him.

All of this is extremely bad. Ocasio-Cortez is going to be a one-termer if she keeps up this elitist behavior. (That clip where she is walking with a baby looks like something out of VEEP). And the NYPD's treatment of the professor really shows how stupid and arbitrary the lengths to protect politicians from alleged threats on their lives are.

Her staff should especially know better too. Mr. Pappas is a constituent who the congresswoman represents in her district.

They should have made it clear that the registration fees went to her campaign.

But people get shooed away from politicians all the time, especially if they seem like they are "off-message." The rationale is usually something like "it's not in the spirit of the event." This is standard operating procedure and not unusual at all.

That's right no big corporate donations so bamboozle the kiddies.

The indoctrinations start at a young age, don't they?

Criticisms of this fundraiser in general are valid, but QC and Post authors for some reason neglect to note that Pappas is an alleged domestic abuser who owes hundreds of thousands of dollars to his ex-wife and had his campaign accounts frozen for this very reason. Pretty much anyone working in NY politics also knows that he's crazy. There's good reason for AOC's staff to want him to keep his distance.

What say you Queens County Dem. Chairman, Gregory Meeks? Now that the lazy, losing, lunkhead Virginia Joe Crowley has left the stage? AOC's fundraising shenanigans copacetic with the whole elected gang from Austin Street, hmmmmm?

I'm sure the hard-hitting Queens press will follow-up on this story.

Pappas' behavior does sound a little... weird. I'm not too shocked that a man stalking a congresswoman around a campaign event and distributing manifestos eventually had to be asked to leave. Perhaps it was an unfortunate misunderstanding, but I'm not sure that really says much of anything about AOC being "elitist." Was it even her who asked the police to intervene? Unclear.

As for the campaign contribution issue, the Post is really grasping at straws here. The event is called "AOC 5k", and it states clearly right on the home page that contributions go to her campaign fund, and that it constitutes support for the green new deal. The fact that a reporter managed to find a couple people who couldn't articulate very well where the dollars were going means nothing. Whatever you think about AOC, there's just nothing to this story. Lame effort by the Post to drum up controversy.

Disappointed, honestly - I thought there might actually be something interesting to discuss here.

This is what politicians do. She found a sneaky way to line her pockets for her campaign and got away with it. The taxpayers always foot the bill.

She poses with white kids, ehh? Surprised.

As Thomas Tusser said, "A fool and his money are soon parted." The parents who queued up to add to AOC's "environmental run" are lib suckers. I guess they must have plenty of money to throw around on nebulous causes. And how did they not know the money went into AOC's campaign fund? Either they come in the "extra stupid" flavor or she was negligent in telling them that their entry fees went into HER pocket. In any event, what she did was duplicitous and disgusting, fully reflective of her lack of moral character. This carbuncle on the butt of the Congress needs to be gone ASAP. So far, she's been a laughable side show and the licensed driver of the dem clown car. The people of NY deserve so much more.

To those who criticized my post. Note the title. I didn't accuse of her of deception because this is what she and her aides did. (One of aides by the way, is a millionaire who's taking a "living wage" salary) And despite the transparency it still lacks ethics, which is what she claimed to be running on.

I'm not that familiar with the professor and his personal life. But if he is weird and crazy and "everybody" in politics knows he is (I wonder who these dignified sources are) then I find it quite a surprise that he's still on St. Johns faculty.

What could have possibly happened if the congresswoman who was surrounded by supporters and staffers and NYPD protection if she spent a few minutes discussing some issues with a 72-year-old man?

And since were discussing the AOC, I don't think this blog ever got the credit for helping her upsetting Crowley. This was one of the few blogs that gave her exposure, in no part because I emailed crappy with the Young Turks video about her and Crowley (and also the Intercept articles on Crowley) and they got posted. Considering the predictable low vote turnout, I bet that hundreds of readers visited this blog during the primary and went out and bolster her blowout that day.

Unfortunately, almost a year after that historic moment, Crowley is now a lobbyist and still making moves and now Ocasio-Cortez is being duplicitous and also getting hit with accusations that she's never around for her constituents. SAMO Shit

AOC got rid of a Democratic lunkhead who lived in Virginia and assumed he was set for life. She has also proposed interesting ideas (Green New Deal and others) that can be discussed and debated by people with brains. She is outspoken and energetic, unlike the lifetime congressional turds, from both parties. I salute her.
Ranting old white guys should find something else to rant about. I don't believe she is the devil, the ruination of civilization or the scourge of American values. Actually, Trump is.....

And don't forget: Ocasio-Cortez and her ilk are out to destroy the American hospital system. From the NY Times (4/21): "Hospitals Stand to Lose Billions Under 'Medicare for All". Read it and weep HERE.

WARNING: Ocasio-Cortez and her band of crazed, jacked-up collectivist followers are set to kill you. As you, heart attack victim, lie in the vermin-infested hallway on one of the last dilapidated hospital's ER gurneys, with 10 illegals lined-up in front of you, you cry out in agony "Why, oh why did I ever vote for this witch!" Mark these words.

Communism is death by murder. Socialism is death by suicide.

JQ LLC -- how is it "a surprise" that an educational institution would continue to keep a creep employed despite allegations? How many times have we seen that happen over the past several years?

To clarify on earlier comment, Pappas has been showing up at random political events trying to spread his message about judicial immunity for years now. He passes out flyers with nonsensical writing scrawled all over them. I know because I personally have seen him around countless times and interacted with him. Rarely makes the news because no one wants to give another megaphone to an Alex Jones type, though the Post seems to happy to, naturally.

So we've come to the point that people trying to get healthcare for millions of Americans who lost it or never had it, are villains. Yes, let's keep the present crappy, expensive, inadequate system that leaves millions out, and is likely to be further destroyed by Trump, and dumb Republicans with Cadillac healthplans paid for by taxpayers. There are multiple developed countries that have figured out how to insure the whole country with high quality care at lower cost, and get far better health results than we do.

100 Ron.

It's prudent and more frugal for our nation that 9 figure salaried health care and pharma oligarchs to continue to slovenly profit from their useless health plans, addicitive opioids and gouging prices for vital medicines like that hipshit subhuman Skhreli did.

""one of the last dilapidated hospital's ER gurneys, with 10 illegals lined-up in front of you, you""

That's happening now George!!
My friends dad died of chest pains in Wycoff's ER.
-And from what I been told they were caring for all these woman in labor, likely illegals because not one of the mobs could speak English.
It seems they now operate on some type of triage situation called Major incident medical management priority.

Im thinking if this 'Medicare for All" happens and your over 50 the system will consider you obsolete. Then take your home and estate for doing nothing to save you to pay for it all, right?
All these stupid liberal arts, dance, and music kids with no jobs in sight are gonna be broke and homeless (coming through our windows) when the parents kick the bucket to pay for this shit.

I been thinking about all the things people have said on this blog that have come true.
I now believe NYC could become a disaster worse then we think. Maybe like we are seeing Venezuela. I don't like what Im seeing with my own eyes and ears and will never vote Democrat again.

Whatever you say, Ron. But at least my gurney is ahead of yours.

And 100 JQ!

Only problem is under Madicare 4 Y'All that litany of problems you cite will seem quite insignificant.

How is a system that requires people to have a job to get healthcare which puts people in a position to lose the job and healthcare because of health issues be a good system?

How is a system that does not require hospitals and insurance companies to make costs publicly available so that people can make informed decisions a good system?

Subject: Voter Referendum on Abolishing job of NYC Public Advocate

Hi,

City Charter 2019 will soon vote on what to put on the ballot for Nov 5th 2019 Election.
Powerless the office may be, but pointless it is not. Not for the politicians, anyway. not because the job has anything to do with the public or with advocacy, but because it’s a spectacularly effective political launching pad

That's why I created a petition to CIty Charter Commission 2019, City Charter Commission 2019, which says:

"Government of the people, by the people, for the people.... People wondered for years why the NYC c needs a public advocate and it time for people to vote on whether to abolish this office. The millions used to fund this office could be used to fix Potholes. This petition is asking the Charter 2019 commission to put the Voter referendum on Abolishing Job of NYC Public Advocate on the Ballot this November Election.
"

Will you sign this petition? Click here:

Thanks!
