Dragon boat race experience was crappy

"Hi Crappy,

I attended the races in Flushing Meadow and want to report the crappie conditions I witnessed on Sunday.

First of all the north end area of the lake is getting a much needed makeover and large sections are fenced off where trees are being planted and roads resurfaced. Many people had problems including me trying to figure out how to get to lake area where the races were. There were no signs set up to direct people thus people had to walk down a path only to find they could not get thru. I ran into two DEC officers and wanted to complain to them but they were having the same problem and said, "don't complain to us, call Parks Dept."
When I finally got to the lake I saw that our Park's Dept. did nothing to spruce up the viewing area which was on both sides of the boathouse. People lined up along the shore got to view a lake full of algae, a 10' long board, a sunken barrel a dead turtle and along the shore a rotting pigeon.

There was also an inadequate amount of litter baskets and people were just leaving trash on the ground. There were many corporate sponsors that gave away free stuff for the kids and that added to the trash.

I attended the races last year and saw the same conditions and even wrote to the Park's Dept but I guess they think it's not a problem.
One would think that for a big event like this the Park's Dept. would at least try and spruce up the area ,no I saw the same conditions I see in my bike rides around the park. This really is a tale of two parks. The area by the Unisphere, the theater, the museum and the tennis stadium gets all the attention. Hopefully the upgrades by the lake area will keep coming." - Rich

Parks Dept need to be investigated and audited. There is a lot of corruption in this multi management city agency. Most workers are lazy and could care less about keeping our parks in tip top shape. It harbors staff who are known sex- perverts . The big question should be : Where is the Queens Parks Commissioner and her deputies? There needs to be a full investigation into this tax dollar wasting agency. The conditions in that lake area have been the same for at least 25 years.

Agreed. The parks dept. is in disarray and there is obvious discrimination when it comes to issuing infrastructure and maintenance improvements in certain parks. Attention should be paid to the Central Park Conservancy, which for some stupid reason, are behind all promotion heavy events and outdoor film nights in every park in the borough.

"Diji"....Chinsse for "low class"...event.
An event that's laughable compared to what NYC has to offer. And in this heat wave...Flushing smells like a "Rose"....don't it?

NOTHING THAT THE CITY PARKS DEPARTMENT HAS DONE IN THE PAST 20 YEARS TO THIS PARK HAS EVER LASTED OR ENDURED. THE AREA AROUND THE LAKE IS NEVER MAINTAINED. THE MANY TIMES THAT I HAVE BEEN THERE I NEVER AW WORKERS PICKING UP GARBAGE OR MAKING SURE THAT THE PICNIC AND BARBECUE AREAS HAVE BEEN CLEANED. I AM TIRED OF BLAMING THE CITY BUT I THINK SOME OF THE BLAME NEEDS TO BE PUT ON THE WORKERS. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A STRONG WORK ETHIC YOU ARE GOING TO DO A HAL-ASSED JOB. ONCE THESE WORKERS JOIN A UNION THEY BECOME COMPLACENT AND LAZY. I'VE BEEN TO OTHER PARKS IN OTHER CITY'S AND I AM LEFT AMAZED AT HOW WELL MAINTAINED THEY ARE.

ONCE AGAIN, THE OTHER 4 BOROUGHS ARE TREATED LIKE SECOND CLASS CITIZENS. IF THIS WAS THE TITANIC, WE'D HAVE SUNK A LONG TIME AGO !!

Dibozzos lib-tard friends who work for him only care about their pockets and reputations. This park hosts one of the most anticipated sporting events in the city every summer and they turn a blind eye to the rest of the park. If this were any other city they would force the USTA to really drop some serious cash to maintain and develop the park. The parks department is a bureaucratic mess that gets nothing done. A giant middle finger to all of them !

YOU COULD SAY THIS ABOUT EVERYTHING IN THIS BOROUGH STARTING WITH ALL LONG TIME POLITICIANS WITH WHOM YOU ALL SEEM TO LOSE YOUR RESPECT WHEN THEY ENTER THE ROOM TO RECEIVE THE HEAD OF THE LINE OF RING KISSERS, WAVE, THEN LEAVE.

WHAT INCENTIVE DO THEY HAVE TO DO ANYTHING FOR YOU? NOTHING WILL CHANGE UNLESS YOU DO. FACE IT NO ONE CARES ABOUT ANYTHING YOU SAY UNLESS YOU MATCH YOUR WHINING WITH ACTION.

The part of the park involved with the tennis looks immaculate. It is one of the handful of things in Queens that draws outside interest (outside of the airports, Belmont, and Citifield)

Since you only see interest in Queens on the Dragon Boat racing (face it, its a niche market without any appeal outside of Queens) why are you surprised that it looks like the rest of Queens.

Third world.

Looks like shit, the parks department (sons and son in-law handed job employees) cant even trim or shape shrubs properly.
Why cant they hire professionals that adapt quality standards and pride in their work instead of paying big $$ and benefits up the wazoo for handed down family system amateurs who don't know how to do the jobs we pay for?
I honestly think the homeless people with mental illness in that park can do a better job trimming and sweeping.
That Unisphere and whole dam park is also being buried by the USTA.

"workers are lazy and could care less"
True they had those jobs handed to them and get special protection's from the higher ups where other would be fired !!
Those people were never the brightest bulbs but they were hired based on skills and not "theory of relativity" sorta speak
Now you have some skill ignorant lazy stoned pothead son of a supervisor or city employee who was handed the job, paid union wages, healthcare & dental to goof off.

They used to call park workers "parkies" meaning a lazy lifetime job until retirement pension. It still is!

Whine whine whine. if you don't like it do some thing about it. Form a group and take it to city hall, get a petition signed and take it to all your elected officials. Organize a group
that will meet at the lake and do a litter clean up. Whining gets you no where and no sympathy, take action.

Well the question is not about the workers, but the movers and shakers of Queens.

Do they not have respect and pride for our borough? For its communities? For its people?

They go apsh*t over illegal immigrants. The go nuts over trans-gay what not. Yet when it comes to regular meat and potatoes stuff they just don't give a crap.

And if you ask them why, they either do not answer or tell you to write them a letter or call 311 or push that little button at the stop light to make the light change.

I heard these park workers get paid 25 an hour. And i cant even walk the park without bumping into garbage full of weed baggies and broken needles. The homeless take advantage of the unisphere too by showering infront of everybody. Youre lucky if they only washed their head.

HERE IS A GUY THAT LIKELY SLEPT THROUGH CIVICS - LIKELY IS A SHILL FOR A POL.

MY FRIEND, ITS AMERICAN CITIZENS EXPRESSING OPINIONS AND NOT READING FROM A SCRIPT OF BS YOU GUYS GIVE THEM.

GET OVER IT. ITS ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE UNTIL THEY PREVAIL.

LOL! Anyone else having flashbacks to the Golden Venture?

It truly is sad that the parks department really makes no attempt to make this event feel special. I've been to this even for many years and am always shocked at the lack of trash receptacles. It's truly a shame. - Alfster

Estelle Cooper ruined Queens Parks. Nobody ever investigated why she
was kept as Commissioner for
nearly 3 years even though she was had dementia and Parkinsons. She collected paychecks for doing nothing for
3 years while our parks failed. The AG should investigate what else has been going on there.

The FMCP grounds are only spruced up for high-end events like US Open, not immigrant events like the dragon boat race.

Every NYC park I have been in this year smells horribly of human feces and urine. Note to men - when you urinate publicly, the stench remains.

Look at who works in the Parks Department and that is your answer. When Workfare started 2/3 of the Parks Dept were fired and were replaced by Welfare recipients who work for their benefits. If they don't show up or don't have a letter from a doctor or a court, their welfare is stopped. Sorry, I should say we'fare.

Now there's a program that for 18 months the former Workfare person gets paid by the Parks Dept to do the same thing - a whole lot of nothing. How hard is it to sweep up clippings, pick up trash, or weed a garden?
Then they are back with the we'fare. Some of the population are very very happy to accept believing that it is their 40 acres and a mule that Lincoln promised.

McCarren Park in Greenpoint is disgusting - the bathrooms are medieval.
Tompkins Square Park has unbelievable weeds that no one bothers to cut down, no planting done but plenty of wino bums congregating and causing disturbances.

I wonder where the $25,000 fee the Dragon Boat Association goes? They have been paying that for nearly 25 years!!! Think of all the improvements Parks could have made with all that loot!

Estelle Cooper more then ruined Queens
She was one of NYCs epic all time crooks, got away with more shit then Al Capone did in Chicago in my opinion.
Back when we had dinner fundraisers for the New York State pavilion at Terrace on the park over $500,000 was brought in and it all disappeared. She blew most of it on her friends and herself on Vacations, daily lunches & dinners (at Terrace on the Park)
Nobody would investigate her and this was long before she got Alzhimers.
Even something like a 12 person trip to Italy to discuss terrazzo restoration New York State Pavilion the name of official business.
---Embezzled and spend down every cent of the $500K with complete immunity !!
When we approached her inside Terrace on The Park at another one of her "fundraisers" she called the cops who threw us out. --said we looked menacing like hitmen.
The cops were laughing knew the story but said they had orders to remove and ban us from the building.
She was a real piece of shit !!

I used to actually participate on one of the boats as a rower, for two summers. I stopped because the pond water was DISGUSTING, and decided being exposed to it wasn't worth the risk. Beyond that, the waterfront area of the "lake" REALLY could use sprucing up with better signage, expanded facilities, replaced dock-wood...I am sure all the money given by the DBA and attendees has been "well-spent"...somewhere.
