Howard Beach Staples closing

From the Queens Courier:

The only Staples in Howard Beach is closing at the end of this month.

The store put signs up announcing the closure last week but there will be none of the usual sales fanfare, according to the workers at the Cross Bay Boulevard location. Residents have noticed workers starting to pack boxes as the store nears its closing date.

“Sad how everything seems to stay here short term,” Lisa Marie, a local, wrote on the Howard Beach Civic Association Facebook page.

Superstorm Sandy hit businesses hard on the boulevard and the office supply store didn’t open back up until mid-2013. With less than a year of operating after recovering, the store will be closing its doors for good.

Staples must be doing a lot more business online. When the staples on northern Blvd (close to flushing high school) closed down, I was surprised. I usually go in there mostly for school supplies. The other one on northern and corporal kennedy is packed the first couple of days at the beginning of the school year.

Too many Staples, Petcos, Subways, Home Depots, TD Banks. And yes, even McDonalds and Starbucks.
Eventually there comes a time when these companies reach the oversaturation point and start losing money.

Not to mention the ubiquitous chain pharmacies- the Duane Reade,Walgreens,CVS, and RiteAid types in particular. As my late grandmother in law used to say,"Too much is too much".

Staples announced they would be emphasizing the online channel to a much greater degree, and looking carefully at what physical real estate they really needed.

Good riddance. F these chain stores.

Now this is how you can begin responsible new housing development. Open areas with good access to transit no longer needed for outdated purposes.

where is the good access to transit in Howard Beach? the Q53 & Q52 stop at around 12:30 at night?

The Q53 runs all night.

Howard Beach is an old neighborhood that is not developing at the rate these major stores need to develop foot traffic and make their retail locations valuable.

Over-saturation is one thing, but lack of demand is another. Besides school children I can not imagine this staples having enough business in Howard Beach to stay open and lucrative.
