North Flushing plastered with illegal signs overnight

Crappy -

On Monday night, a huge swath of North Flushing from College Point Boulevard to Murray Street / 28th to 35th avenues was hit at almost every intersection with these signs. They say "Cash for any Car" with a phone number below.
The problem is that the asshole that illegally put them up used *industrial strength adhesive* to attach them to the poles and signs...it's almost impossible to take them down without damaging them unless we can find a solvent. Sanitation and NYPD are useless, as are our lousy Councilpersons (Vallone & Koo).
Senator Avella has already been made aware and reached out to the agencies in question, but they haven't done anything to remedy the situation, much less give violations to these bastards.

Help!

516 232-0007.

So, call the number and when the truck shows up, beat the living sh... er, I mean issue the driver a summons.

The signs were also put high enough to be out of reach. I will try take them down on my block using a old broom stick with a hand scrapper attached.

There are hundreds of these signs all over Queens. Law enforcement needs to investigate what kind of operation this is. Most likely involves drugs with potential ties to terrorist groups overseas.

Anonymous said...

Quite correct. It is very difficult to remove the signs completely when they use this type of adhesive. In my neighborhood, the law breakers appear to use tar.

But behold - a box cutter with a retractable blade. It can be hand held for the low ones or secured to a long pole for the high ones. Our sharp little friend can slice off the ends of these signs thereby rendering them useless to the criminals who put them up (no complete phone number visible).

If you do it right you can make that sign into a narrow vertical strip which, while not ideal, is certainly a lot less noticeable.

Don't wait, Gentlemen. Start your cutting!

I've seen these signs in bayside while coming off of the highway. Wonder how much they really do pay for your car?

Anonymous said...

These guys are ridiculous. I see these cash for car signs all over queens and Brooklyn. Something has to be done its out of control.

Alfredo said...

Let's flood this place with calls all day today. Tell them we saw their ad on queenscrap and wanted to compliment them on their winning the "crap of queens" award for the week.

Anonymous said...

The assholes who do this call themselves "Guerrilla Marketers" They feel it's their right to advertise anywhere they choose. As far as terrorist connections? That's a stretch. It's more likely the local "Goombah" car wreckers.

THE SIGNS ARE PLASTERED EVERYWHERE. Yet, you put up a sign for a yard sale -- and see how quickly you get a $75.00. It happens all the time.

We have to "get" the Mayor and the Governor to "explain" :

Why is it that a Councilman and a Senator command no "real" respect from the City agencies and their Commissioners.

In particular, I refer to the DOB; the FDNY; and other agencies.

Truth of the matter is that Senator Avella will always listen to his constituents. He will always right letters on our behalf.

Unfortunately, the Senator apparently has NO real means to get the City agencies' Commissioners or figure heads to respond to him adequately.

I know for a fact that the Senator has many times requested to meet with the NYC DOB Commissioner in Queens. He, actually, cannot get an appointment to meet with him to discuss projects that present serious "Quality of Life" issues.

Pathetic state of affairs. Undoubtedly, the City's lawyers will not allow the Commissioner to discuss particular projects.

Huang's projects.

Depending on the height of the poster, it's either a DSNY or a DOT issue. My contact at DSNY tells us that summonses and violations are issued all the time but the offender never shows up and the matter is at that point in the hands of the court.

Legislation and enforcement are needed, as well as public shaming by the media. Where's Greg Mocker?

The most ridiculous thing about this situation is that Sanitation will only answer individual 311 complaints....they will come, remove one sign and leave all the rest.

That practice needs to stop!

How about we glue Stinky to one of the poles in question?

I called the number up. An Italian scumbag picked up.

Why doesn't he ask Virginia Joe if these signs are on HIS block. Fair question as Virginia Joe thinks Joe Liu should be on YOUR block.

What you get when you have lazy, useless and corrupt leaders in your borough.

This shit does not happen in other communities like it does in NYC.

This city allows anything to take place.

Anonymous said...

They are using cherry pickers to put them up in many cases. So you need a cherry picker to take one down. I don't have one handy. Do you?

So it looks like some outfit that uses a cherry picker in its ordinary business does this as a side job.

I have seen some of them with the phone number painted over. That's not quite as good as removing it, but a start.

I suggest that the city be allowed to terminate phone service to numbers which appear on these signs after the summons are not paid and the signs not removed.

i believe this guy was stealing cars off the street until he got busted a few years ago he went by the A.K.A. the mad hatter and was driving a white flatbed out of brooklyn devoe st it looks like he is back and this is his idea of conducting legit business

this can be settled very easily , sanitation police take an old car park it in a residential , then call the number when they arrive and pick it up get the owners info and place him under arrest and fine him.

Are these the same people who offer you "Cash for Homes?" Those folks are destroying our neighborhoods.

LMAO what in gods name are you smoking, man? Yes, im sure these signs have direct ties to al-Qaeda

What's so crazy about it? If you can fund terrorism through stolen baby formula then why this is so far fetched?

Anonymous said...

The guys name is spirou he is a GREEK from Astoria he gets away with it there cuz the politicians only enforce against non Greeks there i wonder why i guess he figures he can get away with it there what a slum Astoria is turned into

Anonymous said...

I can't condone this but here's a thought:

What if somebody made up their own signs that could be glued on top of the CA$H for CAR$ signs.

These new signs would be a little smaller so that they cover everything BUT the phone number, which would still show at the bottom.

These signs could say things like:

FREE P*SSY
CALL...

or

Into Bestiality?
Give me a ring at...

or

Your Local Pedophile
Can Be Reached At...

I have a hunch THOSE signs would all come down pretty quick.

This is also illegal of course, and so I'd never do such a thing but who knows?

Somebody else might...

Anonymous said...

Let's see you have a perp that commits a crive and leaves their phone number.
And the city can't figure out how to stop it ?
As GTA said, call the number and arrest anyone that shows up. Impound their truck which will cause them financial pain.
Rinse and repeat.

Anonymous said...

it's almost impossible to take them down without damaging them unless we can find a solvent.

YOUR COMMENT MAKES NO SENSE. WHY WOULD YOU GIVE A RATS ASS ABOUT DAMAGING THEM ???

Queens Crapper said...

It makes perfect sense. If you can't take the entire thing down, then there will be a piece of it left on the pole, which is almost a worse eyesore than having the whole sign up.

Joe Moretti said...

I don't get how they can not catch those doing this and the same with the clothing bins. It is not like a single person walks by and puts something on a sidewalk or high on a tree or pole in a second. You need actual big equipment to do this and it takes time, especially one of those big clothing bins.

Makes no sense

Anonymous said...

How about these politicians who put illegal signs all over the place like councilman john lui its ok for them thats why they dont bust these guys because then they too will be throwing some BIG STONES in those glass houses they live in once again.think about it!

Anonymous said...

"It makes perfect sense. If you can't take the entire thing down, then there will be a piece of it left on the pole, which is almost a worse eyesore than having the whole sign up."

Disagree with you there Crappo. It's not perfect but it's a lot better. But... I'm sure you'll find a reason why having a sign remnant left on a pole is worse than Hitler. Happy trolls to you!

Anonymous said...

now if anybody gives a rats azz about this a reasonable solution would be to arrest this guy (if you can get nypd off there lazy AZZ) and then in court his sentence could be community service make him cleanup the highways for 20 days like the rest of our low level criminals the problem is you are definitely going to need a local politician to put pressure on the cops to do something or this forum will probably be as far as it goes

Anonymous said...

First thing you do is take a Sharpie and cover the last 4 digits of the phone number with black ink - so the sign becomes useless.

Well this asshole is now putting his signs all over the Bronx on lamp poles so I say to you that the sanitation supervisor for Bronx 12 has to make a formal complaint to the police department as well as his superiors and get a warrant for this persons arrest he has the power to do that The department of transportation should also have the man arrested because he's defacing the lamp poles which are under the jurisdiction of the department of transportation

Let the NYPD vandal squad do some real work.
This is technically graffiti. When graffiti vandals place stickers around town this is called sticker tagging.
Well, isn't this sign tagging?
Fugghettabout it! This vandal...rubber gun...squad finds it easier to go after kids.
Yes...Koo and Vallone are among the most useless council members around.
But that's your fault for electing them.
Make sure Vallone, in particular, does not get a second term.

This guy must be stopped NOW. 516-232-0007. This CRIMINAL has posted thousands of signs in all 5 boro's. Someone I know who has done business with him said his name
is JOHN SANCHEZ who grew up in the Flushing, Fresh Meadows area in Queens. He has been
posting signs for ten years now. He blatantly post's 4 signs at every intersection in
EVERY boro, he is a lunatic. He's arrogant and thinks he will never be caught. He uses 5 differnt phone numbers to disguise himself, any phone number starting with 516 area code that's probably him.No doubt he uses throw away phones to conceal his identity.
He is a junk dealer and has no location. The Dept of Sanitation if they catch this guy would have to pay $75.00 per sign X 50,000 signs . Do have any idea how much money he'll have to pay. DO THE MATH. Set him up and get the tow companies he uses to roll over on him by impounding their trucks and arresting them as part of this SCHEME.

I think if the NYPD wanted to investigate, it's probably easy to triangulate the phone numbers then start building up a database of people and businesses connected to them. The "Intelligence Unit" of the NYPD has experience doing this type of work - as they spent millions on the unconstitutional surveillance of mosques and Muslims in NYC (which yielded nothing). In comparison, this should be a much cheaper and shorter term operation that yields a lot more arrests and results that people will appreciate.

So these Cars For Cash assholes posted 3 signs on the corner of 51st Ave and Poyer St in my neighborhood in Elmhurst - one of them 20 ft up next to the traffic light, another on the traffic light pole, and a third on the red corner FDNY pull station.

Called NYPD to see if they can investigate. After showing up to our residence, here was the amusing conversation:

Cop: Well, just take the signs down.
Me: I can't, it's stuck with industrial strength glue. And I can't reach up 20 ft in the middle of the intersection.
Cop: Well, it's just like a yard sale sign. It's nothing really.
Me: Well, not really because yard sale signs usually go away once the yard sale ends. And yard sale signs aren't posted on traffic lights with industrial glue. And I don't see them on every corner of Queens. Also, these seem to be for a business, not a personal sale.
Cop: Business or personal - it's not illegal.
Me: Are you sure?
Cop: Yes, maybe a summons at worst. Plus, I see Kars for Kids signs are everywhere.
Me: But this isn't Kars for Kids, it's Cars for Cash.
Cop: Oh OK, thought you said Kars for Kids. Still, it's like graffiti. Actually, for graffiti we would arrest the guy. For this, there is no arrest, just a summons.
Me: So what would you do if you caught one of these guys in the act of putting up the signs?
Cop: We'd probably just ask them to take it down. They'd probably do it right away.
Me: OK. Do you think you can investigate the people behind these signs?
Cop: No, we just don't have the resources to do that when there's other things going on.
Me: OK. Even though it's everywhere?
Other Cop: You know you can just cover one of the digits on their phone number.
Me: OK, maybe, but I can't reach up 20 ft on the intersection.
Cop: OK. I just don't understand why these signs bother you. I worry about my mortgage, and my bills, and that's it.
Me: Ok, well would you want these signs posted up in front of your house? Besides, I already took care of my bills, so now I can focus on a neighborhood nuisance.
Cop: That's good.
Me: Ok - is there anything you can do about the fact that my wife called the number and asked the mobster sounding guy about their signs in our neighborhood and they told her to go fuck herself then hung up the phone?
Cop: No.
Cops start to head out.
Me: OK, thanks for doing nothing about all this. It's exactly what I thought you'd do.

Note: Separately, I called 311 to report it, and got a case number C-1-1-1308102441.

Call every phone number you see. A live person picks up the phone. Tell them you have a car for them but it doesn't run. Make arrangements to have them pick it up. Give them a fake address. Let them drive all over the city wasting their time chasing fake cars.
