Disturbing conditions persist at Bayside Cemetery

From WPIX:

It's a cemetery that looks like a scene out of a horror movie. Bayside Cemetery in Queens, right off Pitkin Avenue, has overturned headstones, either broken or misplaced.

"I was just doing my deliveries nearby and took a peek. What I saw was disturbing," said Anthony Pisciotta, who emailed PIX11 News pictures of the horrific scene.

The graveyard is in disarray, some crypts are left open, rotting skeletons are in clear view of the street.

"If it was a dead dog in the street, someone would move it, take it away. There are no words," said Pisciotta, giving PIX11 News a disturbing tour.

Forget about
wasting money on "perpetual care".

Oh....I'll bet Toby Stavisky and her Dem machine dug up more than a few votes there!

It boggles my mind that Bayside goes this many years without a solution. It is horrible that the Rabbis care so little about this place. It is horrible that the temple used the monies of perpetual care for a new roof on their building and threw this cemetery under the bus and keep it that way because they believe they have the shelter of religion to bypass the laws of the land. There will be a day when these people will reap what they sew, it's just too bad it won't come in time for Bayside and the families who entrusted their religious base to care for their deceased loved ones final resting places. The U.S. government needs to intercede if the state level continues to ignore the situation. Laws need to change in order to protect these sacred grounds. Giving a cemetery a free pass just because they are owned by a church, is wrong on so many levels and Bayside is living proof of why things have got to change; and Bayside is far from the only cemetery operated by religious organizations that has fallen into disrepair and disgusting conditions. This one has gone on far too long, and the Rabbi's have proven they could care less. I would pull membership from such an uncaring group as this, and lobby for better controls if it were me.

The conditions of that cemetery are not nearly as disrespectful to the dead as the news reporter bringing in cameras and filming skeletons in an attempt to generate ratings.

FU annonymous #3!

It's not about generating ratings.

It's about finally generating some proper care for these graves!

That reporter did his job well and exposed the already exposed skeletons and maybe some temple fat cats who might have misused money.

Kudos....the truth is out there now!

Sure, the news is not about generating ratings. I also have a bridge for sale. Think maybe they could have reported the story without actually showing the skeleton? Of course not. It wouldn't have been as shocking.
Seriously, they are just bones anyway. Even if you believe in the soul and afterlife, do you really think it matters if the bones are exposed? If it was that terribly important to the family the body would have been buried.
What about all the well kept graves in active cemeteries. Do you think the will really be well kept in 100 years? 250 years? 500 years?

First of all, the story was not advertised ahead of time in order to gain viewers. So rating has nothing to do with it.

Second of all, we aren't talking about graves that are 100 years old, but if they were, there still is no excuse for this.

If the condition of the graves doesn't bother you then I don't understand why you would be upset about any of the reporting.

As John Lucker and I have pointed out before, there are inherent contamination issues with exposed human remains. Too many studies are out regarding this, and the local health department should be more concerned about this than they appear. Those are referenced on his site about Bayside and are not to be taken lightly. As far as your anonymous comment regarding journalism, this has gone on for years now and something needs to happen. Showing the skeletal remains may just be one item that will make someone wake up and do something. Someone call the health department or the funeral directors board.

I'm pretty sure those graves at Bayside cemetery are very old. It used to be completely overgrown. Most of the people who visited the graves there are likely dead themselves.
Sure there are contamination issues with rotting tissue of humans, but when all is left is bone I'm pretty sure it's harmless. It cant be any worse than what the refuse our local restaurants have rotting in their dumpsters or the bodies that were littering the shores of Long Island.
Here's an interesting article about the cemetery

FU again!

If showing a skeleton is the only way to get attention to the neglect and disrespect that's been going on....SO BE IT!

That's why it's called investigative reporting.....which usually winds up with a juicy EXPOSE on TV.

In this case its showing exposed graves!

Now let's see the temple try and wriggle their way out of this one!

You've been caught on the news!
Now fix things up!
