"The city is going fine."

From the NY Observer:

"The world has not come to an end," Bloomberg said. "The city is going fine, Broadway shows were full last night. There are lots of tourists here enjoying themselves. Two people told me they went to the theater last night and afterwards tried to get into a restaurant and there was a waiting list. I think the message is, 'The city goes on.' Our Sanitation Department needs some help, they need cooperation. If you do that, things will get better much quicker."

Bloomberg encouraged New Yorkers to take mass transit and to continue to enjoy the city. But the mayor may have had his eyes on the tax revenues that will be lost if too many people stay home. His message was contradicted by some of those tasked with getting the city up and running again.

MTA Chairman Jay Walder said that the subways and buses will not be up to normal capacity, especially the lettered lines in Brooklyn and Queens, until some time tomorrow. And Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty said it would take at least 24 hours for all of the city's roads to be plowed.

Well thank God. My main concerns were the Broadway shows and whether tourists were enjoying themselves.

(At 8:30, Mr. Bloomberg makes up a new name for Juniper Valley Park...)

I haven't seen one snow removal truck come down my street, but I have seen several cars get stuck in the snow.

What an asshole. As long as his tourist dollars are coming in, who cares about getting the peons plowed out.

Anonymous said...

There definitely is something palpably different about the response to this storm. I do not see/hear the plows. Quiet all day except for one pass early AM, and I am on a truck route--88th Street off Cooper Ave.

These trucks have GPS tracking, right? It should be easy to find out where they are. I hope they make it over from Manhattan into Queens sometime soon.

That press conference was odd. The reporters tried to point out something--but no success. They do not challenge him. Why is everyone afraid to make this guy angry?

its like the reports i heard in 69 when lindsey didnt send any plows to queens

Anonymous said...

I know where your plow is...well one of them at least. One has been stuck on the corner of 70th and 69th street since at least 6am. As a result no plow has made it down 69th yet and no one has come to remove/fix the stuck truck all day either.

Anonymous said...

Lindsay could have done the job. Something is going on with DSNY.
I believe DSNY is retaliating against recent management demotions. You now have supervisors driving trucks and picking up the trash.
An investigation should be called for.

Like anonymous1, I've yet to see a plow go through my street.

Since sanitation is usually on top of such things, I'm betting that they let most personnel off for a long holiday weekend. And now, with all the vehicles stuck in the middle of the road, they are having a hard time with getting anything done.

Anonymous said...

And I have to wonder what the death toll will be at the end of all this - EMS crews can't make it to people who need them and even if they do, can't get through the streets to the hospital. With any luck at all, Bloomberg's cold will turn into pneumonia and do him in!!!!

DSNY called in its troops Saturday night. There could have been some who called in sick, etc. But either way, Doherty's plan of attack has failed miserably and he needs to be held accountable. We usually have had good snow ploweing service from DSNY in the past.. but something went wrong this time. It's so noticeable.

Last night there was not one available ambulance citywide, many stuck in the snow. Engine and Ladder Co's were on scene for hours awaiting EMS to arrive or digging out ambulances. Several buildings burned in Brooklyn and Queens as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-due fire companies were not in service because of assisting EMS or people abandoning vehicles in roadways. The Mayor refused to declare a state of emergency. At 1am, FDNY dispatchers had 1,300 calls on hold with nobody to respond. Numerous people were having cpr done on them with no ambulances available for hospital transport, and Bloomberg refuses the aid of the national guard. He could have at least used them to dig out trains and buses. Your taxes at work NYC.

I walked through Forest Hills (along Metro mostly) mid-day and the only cross street that was plowed was 7st...looked like a real mess.

I actually walked up to Kew Gardens to shovel a walk, and for some reason they stopped plowing @ the Jackie Robinson--so up ahead through Kew Gardens to Leffert there were 10+ busses, as many or more cars...and it really looked like a plow never touched Metropolitan....which was odd because walking back to Glendale I saw a salt truck and 5 garbage trucks plowing East towards where Metro was closed.

10:18pm and Metropolitan from Park Lane South to Lefferts Boulevard are still untouched. Metro from the Jackie/Forest Park Drive to PLS was done at some point last night because the streets are barely passable, but if five or six Q54 buses line up again, the street will remain unpassable, as it did all the way till about 11am this morning.

(Oddly enough, Park Lane South *has* been plowed, not that I saw any Q37 buses run through during my scouting today.)

I'm fortunate enough to have a job where this city's shitty response won't have any ill effects on me with my bosses, but there's no reason the working man should be put in a position to have to grovel to a boss because the city neglected to do its duty.

I also heard Helen Marshall on WNBC this afternoon. The woman is as clueless as they come. At least Marty Markowitz knows how to work a crowd, as horribly douchey as he is.

Bloomberg ought be ashamed of himself for defending this effort, but as he's always proven to be out of touch with the rest of humanity, I doubt he'll ever realize just how detached from his constituency he's always been.
