Concern over new pawn shop in Sunnyside

From the Sunnyside Post:

Three Sunnyside elected officials received a petition today asking them to block the opening of a pawn shop at the corner of 46th Street and Queens Blvd.

The petition calls on Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan and Congressman Joseph Crowley to help “close” or “move the location” of a proposed EZ Pawn Corp. store that is schedule to open next month.

“We are distressed about the opening of an EZ Pawn Corp. branch at the most visible, prominent corner of the area, across the street from the Sunnyside Arch and at 46th/Bliss station,” the petition read, adding that it sends a “message of financial decline, counter to every effort community groups and individuals work hard to achieve every day.”

The petition was signed by about 60 residents and business owners, including Ira Greenberg, the president of the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce, to well-known business owners and residents (see petition letter below). The group, spearheaded by Patricia Dorfman, continues to collect signatures.

In response to the petition, Van Bramer said that he too didn’t want EZ Pawn to be located there.

“I would certainly prefer an old fashioned deli,” he said, adding that he lives on the same street just two blocks over. However, “I don’t have the power to say no pawn shops.”

Van Bramer said he would try to get the owner of EZ Pawn, the landlord and the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce together to see if some sort of a solution could be worked out.

What's wrong with pawnshops? They give a vibrant flavor to every neighborhood.

How about getting rid of the day workers on every corner in Sunnyside first?

Don't you know that parasitizing the poor is our latest trend? Usury ceilings? Pshaw!

This won't stop until we have a revolution. It's just the most visible sign of the workers having their knees cut out from underneath them.

Don't think that native Americans don't use these either. I spoke to the owners of a new pawnshop in Astoria and they are reaching out the public at large.

The enormous influx of immigrants - legal and otherwise - is creating an underclass in New York that is challenging our way of living.

Poverty breeds crime - poverty breeds disease - poverty breeds more poverty.

Time for what's left of the middle class to leave New York - let the wealthy in Manhattan deal with the filth they created.

100% correct Babs ---Queens is becoming just like Los Angelos with this Scantuary City bullshit.

What the NYC and Los Angelos mayors are doing is 100% Its Illegel BTW yet Obama and the feds go after Arizona.
Thats a bullshit double standard.
Just wait till the real crimewave and fighting starts

"message of financial decline"

How about aesthetic decline with that monstrosity known as the Sunnyside Arch?

I have a Stier house on Seneca ave (Ridgewood) im selling as well. --cant get squat for it.
No Americans with good credit checks will rent it because they don’t want their kids going to the local schools that have become nothing more then baby sitting services for unruly, disruptive violent, cash babys of illegal aliens.
I wont rent it to certain people neither ! When these "certain people" get pregnant when they stop paying the rent it takes years to get them out (+ 14 months lost rent + gas, electric & lawyers on your wallet) because there is a child in the house.
When you do get the house back its then 1/2 destroyed
Its such F_ing bullshit !

To tell you guys the truth Id rather live in the Willets Point junkyards in a small shop then live in lower Ridgewood or parts of Maspeth.
The people down in Willets are honest, hard working and easy to get along with.
Its the tweeds that have been here a wile, learned how to "get over" dropping babys to work the system that are the scumbags.
The city needs to spike the water with birth control or throw them all out. You can bet the population (along with poverty and desperation) WILL double in 5 years. A huge number of those now 8 year old anchor babys will be pregnant by age 13.

u really think theres gonna be a welfare state in 2015 pal? i dont thjink so

Although I may not agree with the pawn shop idea in the area. This is a business that obtained a lease, filed with the buildings department and pulled permits (I Presume), in order to open what is still a legal business in the area. Now a pettition to stop it may border on unconstitutional.

Take the pawn shop and be happy. When the "we fix flats" shops start opening up-- 6 in a row right next to one another-- then you can start worrying.

Morons...Pawn Shops actually prevent crime. Instead of knocking Granny over the head and stealing her purse because "their check ran out" and they need a fix and don't have any money, they can pawn their rent-a-center electronic equipment and get a few bucks to survive till the next welfare check comes in...

Also when someone sells or pawns they have to show an ID...so the idea that ton's of stolen stuff goes to Pawn Shops is another lib "anti-capitalism" lie. If you steal something, you'd be crazy to sell it at a Pawn Shop unless you are a junky and don't care..Pawn Shops keep log books and actually help to make arrests after the fact because they have to keep such thorough log books...

Pawn Shops are also a great place for any of us to go and buy things and get a great deal...Only Lib morons would pay retail in this Obamaconomy...

Pawn Shops are on every street corner down South and nobody thinks twice because they don't have this North Eastern elitist "anti-business...anti-freedom" mentality...

The only way to prevent theft is lock your crap up in a safe place...stop trying to take away people's freedom to make money.

If that area is zoned for business' and you don't want business' there...exercise your franchise and change the zoning laws you socialist scum bags...

I wish but Doc Browns time machine is on the fritz. We're thinking SC, NC, or VA....leaning towards Myrtle Beach. All depends on selling the house in middle village.

Can stop a pawn shop.

But you can help the Queens Plaza Millstones.

Hey Joe from Conn: the pawn shop is where they go after they've knocked granny on her head and taken her jewelry.

If you don't think that og books aren't cooked, then you're the moron.

You can't afford VA ...

and SC and NC is overrun with Mickey D's and pig farms - you think this summer is hot? you aint seen nothin'

And guess what is the biggest ethnic group in the south? yup, hispanic.

You cannot run away from the real world. You get the same down there except the IQ is 10 points lower, the teeth are fewer, and Walmart is considered a shopping experience.

Babs said...

now, hold on a second thar' Bobalouie

The South has much more to offer than what you just discribed.

I'm looking in the Myrtle Beach area myself - I would like to be near the Intercoastal actually.

There are beautiful communities there for families and/or retirees.

I'm sticking to Bloomies - fk deals. You can support the Mexicans if you want - I'll support Americans.

Also - pawn shops are legal MONEY LENDERS in case you didn't know that.

And don't expect to see "Pawn Star" Corey in Sunnyside any time soon. There are so many ethnic groups in that area WHAT do you expect to actually find there - a Kimchi bowl? a good deal on a Mexican flag perhaps?

You righties are as anti-American as one can get.

Hey idiot politicians, where have you been? Your fascist party leader Pres. Obama and local Democratic Club house cigar maker, Rep Joe Crowley has been asleep at the wheel or too busy tring to tax you and redistribute it to illegals who jump the fence to feed themselfs on all the free goodies the Democrats work for.

Hey - take care of the citizens - Jack faces, and we would not have to walk away from our houses, be on unemployment because Big Government killed off the Wall Street jobs us middle class used to have, spent a year focusing on destroying the Medical system we have and we will have to pay for.

So a Pawn shop is the reality of what takes up residence to serve us whom are pawning our possessions to feed our families and a Congressman who no longer even lives here objects to a small business that is honest and pays taxes to opening in our area? Shame on you for not managing our needs or monitoring the Oil Rigs under your watch destroying our great Gulf States!
Rep Crowley - you want your 2cents on every issue in our area this year - where were you last year in a non-election year? Afraid your going to lose big time in Nov 2010?

Retard, pawn shops take ID so that when granny reports her pearls stolen, the log books have the thief's info. What good does it do the pawn shop to "cook the books" and take stolen property? They'll have paid out to the thief, then get the stolen property seized by the police.

yes - and we all know how unique a strand of pearls is - why, it's as good for identification purposes as your DNA!

Thank you Babs. Some people have a real warped idea of how the south is. We are looking at Myrtle Beach for the same reasons as you. Ocean and beaches.

And yes, we can afford VA.

florida to cape hatteras n.c. is not named "HURRICANE ALLEY" as a myth.

i lived through two hurricanes while in the U.S.Navy in Charleston,S.C.,1953-56.

Mother Nature can do plenty of damage to your person and property.

talk to the seniors in Myrtle Beach,Charleston, and the N.Carolina shore towns like Wilmington,N.C.

they are wonderful areas if you like heat, but take caution of the weather from July to November.....

YA HEAH BUBBA........

Babs said...

yes - we're aware of the hurricanes in the South - We don't have to live a stone's throw away from the ocean.

Just where do you think all that "quality" Bloomingdales' merchandise is manufactured? Hmmmmmm?

Babs said...

True George that the majority of merchandise is made overseas - but, they employ MANY!

Dependent upon what is being sold, many make excellent salaries - wage, commission and health care AND PENSION.

Let's just shut down a free society because someone "may" cook the books or steal something...

Does anyone know what became of this?

get rid of that pawn shop, things that are stolen from residents in nearby neighborhoods (sunnyside, woodside) are being sold here and they are not requesting documents for this jewlery. get rid of it and some of the stealing might cease!
