was not avella a stavisky protege ,at one time .is he a democrat /conservative or liberal/democrat ??

i am not certain that he accomplished much while CM.

i have reason to believe that city hall would not even answer his letters for his constituents. especially the D.O.E.

could commenters list his record of accomplishments?

a member of his staff knew nothing about the district. she was from brooklyn ?

The annoying guitar sound track is louder than the voice.

How is he running with that lobbyist-funded Shelly Silver lapdog Ed Braunstein? Braunstein represents everything that's wrong with Albany.

He still is a Stavisky asshole buddy for using Parkside.

Not to worry....Avella will be working for them in some capacity after he loses the election.

(LOL) After Richard Nixon....Avella is probably the prophetic second best known loser.

Since he worked as a (what was it?) a community representative (?) for the CAU....Tony hasn't been able to climb as high as he'd like in city politics.

He just ain't got the moxie!

But he's running #2 to John Liu for the number of press conferences he holds.

He's not on the ball....aside from perhaps....a contaminated ball field or two.

"i am not certain that he accomplished much while CM."

He rezoned virtually ALL of NE Queens within his tenure as CM (and Chair of the City Council Zoning Cmte).

Biggest rezoning of NYC since 1961.

Nah, not much at all (???).

AND the a-holes here know it. They (or he or she) just HAVE to make themselves feel important and criticize EVERYTHING as if to say "I know better" when in fact they know LITTLE about ANYTHING.

Avella SAVED the district from the TOTAL destruction of the developers.

That is his legacy, and he should be remembered and honored for that.

avella certainly did not save a block near my property.
three 60' x100" ,one family homes with trees and front lawns , demolished.

now twelve family's plus six illegal cellar families occupy
these undersized rooms, with driveways where car doors can not be opened .the trees are gone and the lawns are car lots.
these brick boxes are mostly asian owned, absentee land lords ,renting to transients.

this is zip 11361 .
11358 is now be sacrificed by the politician/developers among us. while the pols. pretend to favor the community.

OK, give us an address of said buildings.
I'll believe it when I see it.

Long-time residents of the District like myself never dreamed that someone would want to demolish a beautiful old beloved tudor or sacrifice a grand old colonial with a century old magnolia on the front lawn and replace it with a monstrous pale pink glittered brick rectangular box, and in addition, kill all trees on the property and hardscape everything - the concept seems inconceivable to me.

AND please, it is NOT just the Asian contractors! - overdevelopment was and IS committed by immigrant ITALIAN and the GREEK contractors as well in concert with what appears to be a very corrupt building department.

Avella came in at the right time - there WERE homes that were demolished prior to his term, but under his WATCH our nabs were SAVED from these sh*theads. His presence at sites marked for demolition was GREATLY appreciated.

This poster obviously does not live in the neighborhood. This has happened all over Bayside and Whitestone. So sad.

Now up for sale: corner property on 23rd Ave and Ryan Ct in 11357. It's a giant wooded lot with a farm style house in the back corner. How many families do you think will live here when all is said and done? If you look on google satellite, you can see the two, two family housed they crammed into the lot next door. They literally build right on the property line. If you google check street view, you can see the nice one family ranch house that was once there. Sad to say, but much of the neighborhood has changed so greatly, it will never be the same.

TWO-FAMILY HOUSE in WHITESTONE!!!!?

How the heck did the Building Department ALLOW that to happen?

Do you know who the builder is BTW - Disano maybe?

I just took a look - I see what you mean. wow - I can't believe it. Big beige box - there goes your parking too - each family seems to have at least 3 vehicles today.

Time to move -

I live not too far from there myself. Most people I know who grew up in the nab and haven't left already are leaving unless they have kids close by or elderly parents to care for in the nab.

I'd call Halloran on this one to see how this came down. Whitestone was NEVER zoned for anything BUT 1-family residential homes. Someone get paid off in the Building Department maybe?

There are many multi family houses in this area of 11357. Check out 23rd Ave between 149th and 150th streets, or between Parsons Blvd and 146 st. Most have replaced one family houses. The lot on the corner of 23rd Ave and Ryan Ct is huge, it will probably be subdivided and become 2 or 3 big ugly beige boxes, two families each, not counting the illegal basements.

Look at those lips.
Has Tony got "blower's cramp"?

Anonymous said...

Uh....CITY PLANNING is the legal entity for rezoning.

A councilman and his consultant are not!

And isn't Auburndale still got some speed bumps to maneuver?

I think Padavan has done more for the district than Tony ever will.

Unless you want to count all of Tony's lightning whistle stop all around the town press conferences he can manage to squeeze into one week.

We really need a suck up to the Staviskys machine Democrat?

I think not!

Almost all of Tony's bills that were introduced in the council never saw the light of day.

Why?

Because he can't get along with anyone!

Politics is the art of the do-able....some compromise is required.

"Reform" pols rarely get anything done except maybe bring out the news media.

you're right - I must be too close to the forest to see the trees!

Any contributions made to Avella will go right to The Parkside Group. He has paid them hundreds of thousands of dollars in past elections. He owes his political career to Parkside and to the Stavisky's. He is and will always be a Stavisky shill.

Hey Tony: Get a job before you retire!

I looked it up on the map.
Zoned R3A : http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/zone/zh_r3a.shtml

As of right, you can legally build multi-family there.

Anyone who lives there should know what can and cannot be built in their nabe, or else they are just ignorant.

Anyone who lives in the nabe should be sure to find out what's going to be built there and monitor it's every step, or else they are just fools waiting to be shat upon.

Back to Avella ... he created the R2A zone with City Planning. It greatly reduced what could be built on lots that were formerly R2, who's wording is as loose as Lady Gaga's legs.

Unfortunately, that house on the big lot in Whitestone is a block or two away from R2A. Even if it was in R2A, it would still be torn down. As long as a gazillion new residents want to live in the area, big properties will be divided. That's just the sad but true economic fact.

Don't blame Avella, he did more to save what's on the ground than anyone could have even imagined prior to 1995. It would be MUCH MUCH MUCH worse now w/o the changes he and the community demanded and besides, it's never an all-win situation anyway ... we're lucky we got as much as we did.

Avella thinks he's a reform politician?

Don't make me laugh 'til I fart!

"Phony" Tony has been kissing clubhouse ass since he started his career with the Community Assistance Unit.

For all his years as a councilman...
his office staff stank....constituent services suffered....all while Avella was running around the town electioneering to become mayor

He should have stayed in his district attending to the daily needs of the people who put him in office.

An actual case in point:

A friend whose business was located office on Bell B'lvd. had an important question regarding his store which needed to be answered PDQ.

I advised him to call Tony's office to get that time sensitive matter settled before he could receive an unwarrented hefty fine.

It took two days before he heard from Tony's without-a-clue staffer.

Disappointed (and embarrassed)at the crappy "service" I then suggested he contact Senator Padavan's office.

They got back to him within an hour or two...which is SOP for their professional staff!

Frank's office runs like a top!

And this little usurper wants to displace a caring legislator with a proven track record?

Not while I'm voting!

Anonymous said...

And Parkside approved the loud guitar sound track?

Maybe that was intentional...to drown out Avella's weak message.

Funny how this turns into a diatribe on how much better Padavan is than Avella.

Except for his dismally conservative voting record, I don't think anyone would criticize Padavan's commitment to constituent services.

Contrary to the pissy comments here, Tony has a pretty good constiuent record too. Yet, nobody tops Frank's. Then again he's been in office for MANY more years and has that power base to stand on.

But the man is 74 years old.
How much longer do you think he'll be able to do the job?
Wouldn't you like to see the State reformed?
Wouldn't you like your Senator's voting record in Albany stand for something progressive and closer to the way the constituents feel on issues, instead of something regressive, reactionary and based on Frank's own conservative zeal?

Thing is, with Avella we have a chance to build LONG term for the community and construct a new power base with the Dems who (by the way) control the $$$.

I like 'em both but think that based on the facts, the choice is clear.
