Bayside Diner closed?

Okay, so what's the deal with the Bayside Diner? Drove past yesterday and it was very much not in operation. On vacation? Under renovation? Closed? Didn't see a sign in the window explaining anything.

the food is great, space is clean, and not expensive.

Bayside had a sign in its window that said closed for renovation.

Soon after the sign disappeared and a friend who is involved in real estate told me they did not renew their lease and the property was auctioned off. I don't know how true all of that is but I haven't heard anything else.

Not only Bayside Diner, but Fame on Union Turnpike, the Palace on Main Street and LIE, and I heard Scobee on Northern Blvd, also closed.

Are rents that high and business that bad?

Anonymous said...

scobee is still open and very busy

Yep, I know I'm late, but no one told me and it's not like any local paper covered it.

wow - I didn't know about this either.

What were the names of that diner before? I remember there were two - but cannot recall the names. (Penny . . . .?)

I think that many of the owners of these old favorites are retiring and that their children are not interested in taking over.

Is the Saravan on Northern and 149th still around?

Chins don't eat at dinners..many have closed, many more will close...its called changing demographics.

Please lets hope it's under renovation. That place is ugly! Looks like a Scarano design...

It was called the Copper Penny in the 70's.

Their food sucked. And the place had a depressing, run-down feel to it.

The quality at all the diners has sharply deteriorated. Everything comes from Sysco and tastes vaguely industrial.

The soup is canned, the tuna comes out of big plastic tubs, etc. It's loaded with cheap fillers and lots of preservatives. Look at how unhealthy the people look that eat at diners.

It's a drag but at least there's still the gyro places.

Saravan was on Northern and 146th. It has been closed for several years, ans is now a bank.

Palace diner is still open, they own the property, fame diner on union however did close.

Go to Omega coffee shop on 32nd ave..best kept secret in bayside for sure..

"The Bayside Diner is closed" why don't you eat at _____ insert here.

If the place hires illegals. I don't eat there, plain and simple.

Anonymous said...

The reason why bayside diner closed was because last year the owner and his sons died in greece. And basically the family that owned it now didn't pay the rent or money to the suppliers. And has since filed for bankruptcy protection.

Demographics have changed, but so has taste. Last time I was at Fame the food was just a greasy mess. It was my first time in a diner in years and I thought, with a menu like a phone book how is any of this going to taste good? Put another Panera where the diner was and it'll be packed. Stale, frozen greasy food just doesn't cut it anymore.

Anonymous said...

To the asshole that said they won't eat anywhere that hires illegals, I guess you are gonna starve then. This is NYC. Have you taken a good look around you?Get the fuck out of NY and go to the MidWest like the redneck fucker you are.

Anonymous said...

It's closed because illegal Asian immigrants don't frequent Greek owned establishments with their "down with America", "let's bleed this country for everything we can" attitudes.

obviously you're the midwest yuptard, thrilled with the perversity of diverity in nyc ---what makes you think we always had illegals staffing diners ? and that all diners DO - ? moron.

Lots of racial comments here. I think the sotry about the family passing away is more plausible thatn "changing demographics" Have you actually driven through there lately? There's still a lot of greek food and a few korean spots, wow, there goes the neighborhood? Give me a break. The food there wasn't even all that great but it was still packin em in everytime I drove by. People talk out of their ass too much. I agree, stale food and a greasy spoon just doesn't cut it in the age of Food Network where everyone wants a cuisine meal.

To the chins and "illegal" asian immigrants comments, with that kind of attitude, its no wonder why they don't ever venture into other establishments. Sure makes them feel welcome. I don't ever see anyone complain when non asians go into an asian restaurant and immediately order General Tso's chicken and pork fried rice thinking they know all about asian cuisine from memorizing the local take out place's menu.

Anonymous said...

Chins? You can't say "chins?". Can you say they drive like shit?

All the Greek diners are subrun by Asians after the Greek kids finished college.

Shalimar in Rego Park - a diner with good food and good service.

Babs said...

thanks for the response to my questions -

Diners were such a BIG part of single life in the 80s! We would party ALLLLL night long and then all go to breakfast at some local all-nite greasy spoon!

People do not eat all that fat and sodium any more. AND perhaps more importantly - people are eating at home because it's cheaper!

"Shalimar in Rego Park"

and oldie but goodie for sure!!

Glad to hear they're still in business.

Babs, the diner was The Copper Penny when it opened. It had been a used car lot. CP was a California chain. I think this was their only NY restaurant. It wasn't so much a diner as a chain restaurant, more like a Howard Johnson's but not as good. I lived up the block. My friends, who live next door, say the current (most recent) owners have been horrible neighbors.

Love those little places like the metro on 74 & metro and johns on metro and hillside.............makes me feel like i still live in nyc.

Babs said...

Liman - VERY interesting !

I often wondered how it got the name of the Copper Penny. TKS for sharing the info.

Food poisoning. Thats all I have to say.

Sorry folks but the problem is that Bayside diner had a small fire in their kitchen and all the smoke went through the vents. The customers were sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation. After that they were slammed with lawsuits because the diner owners would not pay for the hospital bills. Whether they didn't have enough insurance or they didn't have any at all, they refuse to pay and suddenly locked up and disappeared.

I also enjoyed Bayside diner. Many of us grew up knowing that we could have an inexpensive meal or even just walk in for a coffee there. Unfortunately, rent's, insurance and utilities have gone up over the years which makes it difficult for a small businees owner to go on.
What I don't like is that all these Asians come here and supposedly didn't even own a pot to pee in in their country, come here and overnight open up stores, own fancy cars and homes. HMMMM? Something is going on and if we want to keep our traditions we musn't allow oursleves to support them. Meaning stop eating all that chinese food and stop purchasing from their stores. I don't want to sound cruel but they are part of the problem. I live in an area where they are buying every home and act as if they own the whole neighborhood. UGH I could go on but my temper is getting high..GRRR

This is very upsetting. The Bayside Diner was my favorite diner in Queens, by far... They definitely had enough business, if they couldn't pay the bills something else was wrong. It's a shame people will lose jobs that will never get replaced because the management couldn't hold things together.

Scobee is closing on november 29
but the employees had not been all told till now only busboy and the cook were told
only people who spoke spanish so the people how skoke english didnt know i think that stinks

Anonymous said...

Applebee's has become the new diner experience. Can you feel that? It's called the future.

Anonymous said...

I didn't find out until 6 hours before closing that last sunday was the last day for Scobees.Bummer.But, the Bayside Diner was actually better the last few years.
There is still the Blue Bay Diner on Francis Lewis and the LIE.
The day i planned to go to the Bayside a few weeks ago and the bus driver told me they were closed, I went there and asked their manager what happened to the Bayside.he told me their lease was up. Who knows?! I wanted one last cheeseburger from the Bayside for sure!!

It's worse than we might realize.
The "changing demographics" are
apparent near Bowne Park and Kissena Park,32Av-35Av-Northern Blvd from
Main St to Clearveiw Expy. 37
landmark big houses are Churches now.

As for apartment buildings, Landlords
love the "demographics" (chinese,koran,Tiwanese,)
who put up 6-12 months deposits
and grab the rent controlled apartments.
who ever started the parody
of Main Street=Lo Mein Street,
and Flushing=Floo-shing , did
not guess wrongly.
Is this all Good? or Bad?...
'don't know..but it is alarming indeed.

This is under new ownership now and due to reopen....

Wow, what a list of rumors and gossip, you people all seem so sure of what is going on and yet no two stories match. People are apparently talking out of their anonymous assholes.
I also wonder what the deal is, now a lot of time has passed and there is some work being done at the site and the sign is still up, so I'm holding out hope that it will be back.

Gonna be opened anytime soon

I worked at the Shalimar Diner, in Rego Park.. Too bad, when you order your food, you can't go into the kitchen,& see how filthy it is.. See how, if a pickle is dropped on the floor, it is put back in the bucket & served again.. The Chick Peas, are removed from the tables, put back in a bucket & served again, even after customers have already eaten from the bowl & served with the same spoon to other customers..
The servers put together salads with their bare hands, drop a tomato & put it on the salad.. Slice the veggies for the salad on the bare counter.. Salad dressings are not refrigerated..
So eat at the Shalimar at your own risk..
By the way, diner owners love the illegals, because they pay them far less than minimum wage, they work almost 60 hours a week & they are treated like dirt..

Bayside Diner is now owned by the owners of Veranda. The husband runs the diner & the wife runs Veranda. It closed because the lease holders weren't paying their bills. Two brothers owned the physical bldg. & property. One was killed in Greece with his wife & granddaughter. The other brother was terminally ill. The family sold the closed diner. Don't know about the property.

The Yang's aren't the real problem folks. Don't be mad that they had the coin to buy into flushing. They aren't going around killing people and blowing shit up. We need to get rid of the towelhead Muslim scum

Is there anybody out there....?

Hey came across this and HAD to post something since I grew up a block and a half north of the diner, lived there from like 1972-1991. When I was a kid it was the Copper Penny and when it became the Bayside diner they renovated it quite a bit. As interesting as this was, if you want the scoop on a famous location nearby- A few blocks down on the same street (Northern Blvd) was a disco place called elephas back in the 70's- which became infamously known for the Son of Sam attack outside in 1978. All I can tell you is when that happened the neighborhood went crazy-everyone had a theory of who it was. It was a strange time. Also the Yankees won the world series that year. Ah memories....
