From op-ed in the Huffington Post by State Senator Brian X. Foley:
In the year 2010 violence against women simply cannot be tolerated, whether the culprit is an everyday person or a powerful elected official.
I fully understand that expelling Mr. Monserrate will cost my conference a crucial Democratic vote (Democrats currently control the Senate with a 32-30 margin) and may make me, as the sponsor of the expulsion resolution, unpopular with my own party leadership.
However, standing up against domestic violence is a cause worth any political price necessary.
By simply giving Mr. Monserrate a slap on the wrist, we would be sending exactly the wrong signal to both men and women: you can get away with violence against women if you hold a position of power. Mr. Monserrate's actions represent a pattern of behavior unbecoming of a senator.
The New York State Senate is a place where we work to achieve reform and help our state turn the corner on this recession. It should also be a place where we openly debate and disagree with each other. But I will not allow it to be a place that welcomes those who inflict violence upon women, whether they're Democrats or Republicans.
We can start by expelling Senator Monserrate and standing up against domestic violence.

Finally, a State Senator who has the guts to stand up and ask for expulsion. I truly hope both sides of the aisle agree with you.
hiram's actions deserve expulsion. there are other clean candidates from Queens who can serve the people with honor. i hope ?
Goodbye Hymie..................
*rubs his ears*
Did I just hear a man with integrity?
Imagine that, a senator with a pair. From his lips to God's ears.
He's got my vote!!!
Where are all those 60s-70s style "womens"' organizations?
Maybe they've gotten too old, fat & lazy from spending their grant money given to them over the decades!
SISTERHOOD...TIME TO KICK HIRAM'S ASS!
Foley won't permit my comments on his stupid commentary on HP Blog. People, I am not a fan of MOnseratte but don't let the machine pick and chose the seats. My concern is all the back door dealings with lobbyists that Foley and the rest do. Why no ethics reform bill? Monseratte had his day in court and is bound by the court's decision. It is wrong for Foley and the others to hold another trial. Let the people decide if they want him. I am tired now. Bloomberg overturn over votes to extend his job and now the Senate wants to decide the race for Monseratte's seat. Foley's has NO pair, what he is doing is for his own self-interest. Don't believe the hype. LET the people decide.
if he wants to stand up against Domestic Violence then why don't introduce legislation to toughen the laws and provide safe haven for the victims? Why not?? Expelling Monseratte doesn't help Domestic Violence abusers? how?
Foley states: "Mr. Monserrate's actions represent a pattern of behavior unbecoming of a senator."
Pattern? What pattern?
Aside from the Giraldo incident, what other behavior has Monserrate exhibited that is unbecoming of a senator?
A court already has judged Monserrate and imposed sentence. The Senate is not entitled to create additional penalties.
Yeah -- It's a pattern
(From 2008) Queens City Councilman Hiram Monserrate has self-professed history of mental problems

And serving the people in the State Senate is a privilege that should be taken away from someone convicted of a violent crime. And the State Senate has that power. Anon #7, if you are so supportive of Monserrate, let him resign, pay the fine, do the community service, and run for State Senate again. That's the Democratic way.
After the election in Massachusetts, the State Senate's hands will be tied. I don't think they have a choice, Monserrate will be out.
Foley will be facing a tough race of his own in Eastern LI.
Foley does have a pair and Monserrate is the Devil's own child. Please look into his record which includes serving in the Senate while officially being declared too crazy to be a cop.
Googling his other run-ins with the law will open your eyes too.
Please note that an ordinary schoolteacher or bus driver who tried something like this would be arrested for double-dipping, but those who write the rules needn't follow them.
Mr. Monserrate was behind an attempt by my landlord to have me and several other tenants declared crazy so he could move us out of our homes.
If you need to know what landlord I am talking about, google the New York Board of Elections contributors list for the "honorable" senator and see the entry for the $8,000 donation.
Monseratte, an enemy to women and the poor and someone to see the back of soon.
Oh, but he says it's not going to be like all those other times I went back to him - he's REALLY going to change this time!
