Onorato to step aside to make room for Gianaris

From the Daily News:

State Sen. George Onorato, a veteran Queens Democrat, won't seek reelection to the seat he has held since 1983, clearing the way for a run this fall by Assemblyman Michael Gianaris.

At 82, Onorato is the Senate Democrats' oldest member. His recent "no" vote on gay marriage made him vulnerable to a primary challenge, worrying party leaders who urged him to step aside, insiders said.

Senate Democrats were anxious to prevent a primary between Onorato and Gianaris, but just as interested in harnessing the assemblyman's prodigious fund-raising skills for their upcoming battle with the GOP for control of the chamber.

Gianaris, 39, was elected to the Assembly in 2000. He raised more than $2 million for a short-lived state attorney general run in 2006 and was the state Democratic Party's finance chairman in 2006.

He had been considering another attorney general attempt this fall.

Well I'm glad that was handled without the mess of a primary. Lack of choice is what democracy is all about!

And good-bye also to his freeloading wife Athena - always schnurring the eats at the groaning boards.

BTW George, do you come your hair with a mason's trowel? It's always so perfectly patted down.

Funny thing is Onorato is being forced out after his vote on gay marriage while Gianaris is queers as 3 dollar bill.

Who said there won't be a primary?

Look we've seen it time and again. The party picks their favorite and then relentlessly attacks any other Dem that might have the slightest inkling that they'd like to run for the seat. Iraq has freer elections than we do at this point.

I take it that you know this from personal experience.

Yes, we have. But you can't complain about an 82 year old, who might lose anyway, choosing to step down - well in advance - of the election, the same way you would complain about a Manton-Crowley "deal" that truly deprives the voters of any say.

What exactly is the difference? This was done under pressure from party leadership.

The difference is that there could still be a primary, whereas the Manton-Crowley deal prevented any primary. And yes, that's what parties do, push for certain candidates and against others. What would you like to see happen? Onorato run and lose? To whom?

Who says he would lose?

Amazing what crystal balls you have.

Gianaris is NOT gay, he was once married and is quite the kadies man! Believe me, he is NOT gay, "not that there's anything wrong with that."

Let me guess did Schmuck Chumer also give Onorato a threatening phone call?

"Who says he would lose?"

Neither me nor you. I merely asked what YOU wanted to see happen? (and then made suggestions)

"Amazing what crystal balls you have."

Why thank you!
