I've always thought that the right thing to do with aging loved ones was to avoid putting them in a nursing home at all costs. These places are death traps. This is not the only nursing home where things like that are going on. The residents get psychotropic drugs so they stay quiet. The staff insults and mistreats the residents all the time.

What is "all costs?" quitting your job and staying home to take care of someone? Needing to then go on welfare/food stamps to survive?
Is it better to leave someone in a home with 24/7 staff, or to leave them all alone in your own home for 12-14 hours a day?
You can hire help for those 12-14 hours. If they are well enough, they also can enter assisted living.
There are options and you will see that as the baby boomer generation ages, previous conditions will increasingly be deemed unacceptable.
My grandmother had a hard time recovering after hip replacement surgery. My mother and I set aside a certain portion of our paychecks for a live-in assistant (a retired nurse actually) for one year. Grandma has now recovered completely and does not need 24/7 help. She does not need any prescription drugs anymore. Had we put her in a nursing home, she'd probably be drugged with painkillers and what not and even worse. I hope I'll be able to do the same thing for my mom if it becomes necessary.
Not everyone has someone.
I don't know if any of you remember or even knew of the investigation almost 20 years ago into all our nursing homes. The conditions in the majority of them ranged from unacceptable to horrific, and they took many of the directors of these homes out in handcuffs. Seems the patients' money was going to the directors' personal income. They were living like kings and queens while their patients were being denied the simpliest of necessities. The aids they employed were making minimum wage at the time.
Time for another sweep.
Sad story - my sympathies to the family.
Is this Midway Nursing Home? It is easier to get help to pay for a nursing home than get help to pay for home care. Don't talk if you have never gone through this.
