Gilly wants temporary protected status for Haitians

From the Village Voice:

It took an earthquake, but the U.S. government is finally stopping its regular deportation of Haitians back to their homeland.

But it's only for now. Offers to Haitians of the coveted Temporary Protected Status — "given to certain immigrants in the United States who cannot safely return to their countries because of armed conflicts, natural disasters or other emergencies," as the Miami Herald notes — are not in the cards. Haitian activists have continually pressed for such status — way before the devilish earthquake — because theirs is such a dangerous country.

From Politico:

In her letter to Obama, Gillibrand said temporary protected status is "needed because there is no way to safely return Haitian citizens to their country" and continued by outlining precedent for such action. "The United States granted TPS to Honduras and Nicaragua in 1999, following Hurricane Mitch, and to El Salvador in 2001, following several earthquakes.

"Haiti clearly meets the criteria for TPS designation, and extending it would be one way to help address this catastrophe, as well as alleviate additional burdens on American assistance workers," the letter concluded.

As long as they take some to her zipcode.I wonder how much Abner Louima is contributing to the rescue fund?

There is, of course, absolutely no reason to alter the legal status of the large number of Haitians who have stolen residence in this country, even if some actual deportations have to be delayed. But Obama made it plain on the campaign trail that he wanted to import more Haitians.

Since nowhere except VDARE.com will have the steel to say it, I will: the problem Port au Prince has tonight is not the earthquake but the fact that it is filled with Haitians. Of course none here will want to go back: but creating little Haitis in US cities solves nothing (except Democratic electoral problems).

I dont disagree on principle. No reason to change legal status. Illegal immigrants should be deported. But maybe we shouldnt clog the PoP airport with illegal immigrants while we are trying to send them water and food.

Drop the politics and think about people in desperate need.

Maybe they should be sent back now to help with relief efforts. Who wouldn't want to help out their own country?

I think if you join the US military that was a guranteed way to beomce a US citizen - If this is true - this method should be employed, as the military is desperatly stretched to its capacity with two wars and naturaul disasters .

Let them join the U.S. military and go back to their country of origin to help it rebuild for a year. Then they can get automatic U.S. citizenship. The thing is that many of them don't want to be called U.S. Citizens.

This isn't about deporting Haitiains, but deporting Haitians who have violated the laws of the United States. Perhaps there's no difference in the mind of Gillibrand.

The earthquake is over. What makes Haiti such as dangerous place now is that the people surrounding the epicenter are Haitians and not a people who have a tradition and culture of self-reliance and resilience.

As a practical matter, I don't think there's going to be ordinary civilians flights to Haiti for a while which makes Gillibrand's point mere grandstanding.

Temporary my ass. Let's see how temporary they become when they all run for the fences and disappear into the various Haitian communities. Will "Gilly" lead the search for them?

How dare she. We should be deporting these people to a pile a rubble filled with rotting corpses, where they belong. Are you people serious?

Why don't they want to go back voluntarily to help?

You mean they don't want to go home to bury their families?

yeah, like ME. I'm in desperate need!

We are all being manipulated by the media blitz. Where is the media blitz about unemployed NY'er's and homeless NY'ers?

How come the creepy City Council Member from Brooklyn,Mathieu Eugene, won't donate HIS money to the cause of helping his country?

we don't see him running to Haiti. Eugene is safe here in NYC.

Mathieu is too busy running back and forth between the place he lives out of district and to the place he claims he lives.

The only reason why he was elected is because the 1199 union got behind him against the white American candidate Harry Schiffman.

Our genorosity will make us all "people in desperate need".

"yeah, like ME. I'm in desperate need!"

Oh my, where are you and your computer? Under the rubble of a collapsed building?

"Our genorosity [sic] will make us all "people in desperate need"."

What a perverse definition of 'genorosity' you have.

Deport them back to Haiti and let them help their own. Immigrants profess how much they love their country. Let them help out. It's always the US that helps everybody, yet all these countries hate us. I feel for the Haitians and am glad to donate to them, however, I'm against rewarding all the Hatian lawbreakers in this country. Deport them and let them help their own.

There are plenty of unemployed New Yorkers, but Haiti is the cause celebre at the moment.

Why aren't other enlightened countries willing to host Haitian refugees?

deport them back! if you allow them to stay, next there will be another protest in all the cities for everyone to get special treatments.. they broke the law and need to go back! and i think it's a great idea, join the service, send them back to rebuild haiti..

No. I'd rather spend the money helping them rebuild than subsidizing them and their kids here for generations.

Our tax dollars go a lot farther in Haiti than they do here.

Anyone should run against Gillibrand. She stands for nothing but her own ass. Patterson chose her becuase her father can raise him money, all the money in the world wont save him.

Lets keep the Haitians and deport Monserrate, after all, he and my landlord are experts on dropping ceilings on tenant's heads and that's in New York, without even an earthquake.

I agree but it really pissess me off that 2 weeks prior to the earthquake in Haiti there was a Horrible storm in South Dakota that left the Cheyenne River Tribe with basically NOTHING:( and OUR GOVERNMENT COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THEM AS USUAL:( We need to clean out our own back yard first:) why does America feel the need to clean up everyone elses mess let them do it themselves:)
