Fining the sign perps

From the NY Times:

A new City Council proposal would close a loophole that is allowing real estate agents to crowd sidewalks with sandwich board signs. Right now, the law fines tenants and property owners for putting the advertising boards and other obstructions in front of their properties on the sidewalk.

“The current law only deals with property owners, it doesn’t deal with the people who put up the signs,” said Councilman G. Oliver Koppell, a Bronx Democrat who proposed the legislation.

The new legislation would place a presumptive burden on anyone whose name, telephone number or address appears on the sign — regardless of the tenant or property owner.

how about getting rid of everything on public sidewalks. can't stand the 99c stores with all the junk, it's bad enough looking at all the garbage then you look at that too. the only store on grand avenue who keeps the property clean is before debar's shoes, the asian man keeps the sidewalks clean and the flowers are beautiful. the city should be inforcing stricker fines on the stores, like they did back in the day and i don't want to hear them complaining that they pay too much rent, who cares get one of your workers out there sweeping up the sidewalk.

Naaaa, Its part of NYCs heritage.
As far as I can remember, Knickerbocker ave, Myrtle ave Ridgewood, Washington Heights, Jamaica Ave, Astoria.
The once prized corners of Canal St and West Broadway

We always had signs, plants, guy pretzels, junk trays.
Why is this a problem now ?
Do the Yuppies, fags and Metrosexuals from San Fransisco and the midwest not like NYC culture ?
No problem they just need to go home...Boston, Canada perhaps

The PROBLEM is the NEW corporate stores and HUGE signs.
..they burn an average 100 60 watt florescent tubes all night long when closed.

That over 70 Kilowatts per 12 hour closing.
or:
210 55 inch Plasma TV's or 1000 sodium vapor street lights on for 12 hours.

Everything within reason Joe. A sign or two is one thing, but when you have to step into the street to get around them its gone too far.

lmao joe, just trying to get the neighborhood back to where it was at one time CLEAN.... do you ever come over to grand avenue and see the garbage and crap everywhere? when i ran a store on grand ave, back in the day we would get fined if the sidewalk was dirty. I just think too much crap from the store pouring out to the sidewalks looks like an eyeshore.
