Trimming the fat at the MTA

From the NY Post:

Hiring and spending freezes have been ordered at the MTA in a drastic effort to "conserve cash," the agency said...

The MTA "is facing deficits for the remainder of the year and beyond as a direct result" of the poor economy, CEO Elliot Sander wrote in a memo to his senior staff.

Sander instructed them to not hire any new employees, not increase overtime hours, make use of "excess employees," and only make "essential" purchases, he wrote.

Wow, he's ordering the MTA to not waste money! Maybe if they had been frugal all along, they wouldn't be in a crisis right now.

What I have been saying all along. Trim the fat. Especially at the top. Too many top paid executives that don't deserve to be in their positions.

Let them take a cut in pay. I am sure the MTA's second set of books shows they have enough money. Ridership is up! How come profits aren't up.

There should be an investigation into the MTA.

According to Sander at the LIRR 175th birthday celebration at The Airtrain Terminal lobby on Friday "The MTA is performing BETTER THAN IT EVER HAS". The celebration itself was a huge waste of money and another f@ck you by the patrician assholes who have been mismanaging the MTA for year. H. Dale Hemmerdinger and the rest of the aristocratic backslappers ought to be locked up.

How many times must you anti-toll folks be told this? There was never a second set of books, and the MTA's financial troubles will barely be ameliorated by these cuts. The problems now are due to the depression, especially in real estate (the MTA gets much of its funding from real estate transfer taxes). Get a clue already, please.

We need bridge tolls now.

Well maybe we have to change the way the MTA gets its funding. Banking on real estate will always have ups and downs. Maybe instead of using the lotto and OTB revenues for education, we should apply them toward the MTA. We used them toward schools already and it's not working. People actually spend more on the lottery during tough times.

They always cut not fat, but services and in such a fashion to maximize the customer's inconvenience.

The public complains, money is restored (taken from schools, playgrounds, hospitals or simply issueing more bonds)

Fat, hidden in the background, is untouched.

According to who? The guy who made that claim was Alan Hevesi

And then the MTA admitted it.
