Katz expecting baby with no daddy

A leading candidate for city comptroller has carried some personal business onto the campaign trail - she's nearly eight-months pregnant and preparing to be a single mom, The Post has learned.

City Councilwoman Melinda Katz, who conceived through in-vitro fertilization using a donated egg and sperm, is due to give birth to a boy in early June, just weeks before she turns 43, she told The Post.

The unmarried Queens Democrat said her doctor has told her that the pregnancy has gone well and that the baby measured a healthy 2.9 pounds at her last sonogram.

IT'S HER 'TERM' IN OFFICE

I don't understand why everybody's freaking out about this. So she wants to have a child... So what's the big deal? We've seen many more controversial pregnancies recently but this upsets people? Welcome to 2008 folks.

Maybe it's an immaculate conception and she's gonna give birth to another Jesus who'll salvage the world!

Who said everyone's freaking out about this? You're the first commenter!

"If I'm not mistaken, most of my opponents have children. Now, hopefully, I'll have one," she said. "This is a very personal decision that I made, and it's a life decision, not a political decision."

Not political, eh? Then why mention her opponents children?

Does this finally explain Melinda-San's "outie" observed during her trip to Japan?

Who was the doctor? The Angel Gabriel? ("I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. ...")

This just proves what people (especially men) have been saying about her: Nobody would touch her with a ten-foot pole. Not even with a much shorter pole.

Can you imagine the suffering of this poor baby having to hear the "Lullabies" at bedtime? Melinda will use the baby as a practice audience for her shrieky singing and screechy speeches.

Of course, there's no big deal, if your a wealthy white liberal such as Katz, or if you're Madonna, or some other wealthy celebrity that can afford to send your child to private school. But if your name is "Shakwanda", and you live in public housing, and live on public assistance, it is a BIG DEAL!

More importantly though, for some reason, when reading about Katz, "Jodie Foster" is the first thing that comes to mind, I wonder why?

The problem with Melinda is who fertilizes her campaign, not who fertilizes her.

What she does in her own life is her business. Why the hell would a paper even report this? How about an investigative report into her fundraising instead?

I didn't mean you per se.. It's front page news on the Post rag and the morning news folk were all over it like it was some kind of scandal.

Apparently nothing new in the Spitzer/Paterson camps so they have to find something to freak out about....

Then don't have one. As far as I'm concerned, all that matters is that the child has a happy, healthy and safe home. The quality of the parenting is more important than the quantity or martial status of the parents.

Again, when a wealthy white liberal such as Katz has an out of wedlock child, it's probably not going to impact society in a negative light, since Katz will send the child to a private school, and can afford to insulate her child from the rest of society. But, when "Shakwanda" has an out of wedlock child, all of us in society pay the price for her lack of judgement - in the form of increased rates of truancy, juvenille delinquency, incarceration rates, predilection for criminal activity, etc. Who has to pay for the extra social services and police officers required for the problems typically associated with these types of children? US - meaning the taxpayers! Unfortunately, the MTA doesn't have a "first class" car on the subways yet, where I could pay extra $$$ to avoid interacting with these "unplanned monsters".

Congratualtions to Melinda. I don't like her politically and I'd never support her bids for higher office, but I hope she has a happy family life and makes a great mom!

A musical medley tribute to Melinda Katz, sung by Dionne Warwick, with accompanying interpretive dance by the "Solid Gold Dancers":

(Dionne takes the mike and sings Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach")
Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind, I'm keeping my baby, oh
I'm gonna keep my baby, mmm...

(Solid Gold Dancers in matching gold body suits strut their moves)

(Dionne now sings "Year of the Cat")
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolour in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat

(Solid Gold Dancers do moves a la the musical "Cats")

(Dionne now sings "Cat Scratch Fever")

Well I don't know where they come from but they sure do come
I hope they comin' for me
And I don't know how they do it but they sure do it good
I hope there doin' it for free

They give me cat scratch fever
Cat scratch fever.....

(Dionne now sings Harry Chapin's "Cat's In The Cradle):

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little Boy Blue and the Man on the Moon
"When you comin' home, Dad?"
"I don't know when, but we'll get together then"
"You know we'll have a good time then"

(Solid Gold Dancers complete their routine, explosions and smoke flashes go off, and Dionne strikes a pose!)

A marriage license is not a magic ticket that saves children from criminal activity, etc. Being born out of wedlock, or into a poor family does not genetically predispose children to a criminal mindset or anything else. Bad parenting knows no socioeconomic boundaries. Those lovely kids who gutted and left a man in Central Park lake a few years back were rich, white, from nuclear families on the Upper West Side. And we could talk about Robert Chambers, Joel Steinberg, and so on and so forth?

If "Shakwanda"'s children become criminals, it will be because of the effects of poverty, lack of education, lack of motivation, bad parenting and lack of positive role models--not because their parents weren't married.

Look I'm all for "freedom of speech" but seriously...the fact that you can say such vile things. Really puts things into perspective. She is a woman. Someone who chose to have a family on her own. We should commend that. I have no doubt that she will be a wonderful mother. Whoever says anything different, or nasty comments then you know what Karma is a B*tch!

Just why should we commend that?

You obviously exhibit a lack of understanding of statstical averages. So you "cherry picked" a few cases of rich people "behaving badly" - Steinberg, Chambers, etc. But what do the AVERAGES say about children born out of wedlock? Sure, you can also come up with a few cases of children born to single parents who became CEOs or work for NASA. But those are extreme cases in both instances, and don't represent the AVERAGES. The statistics for typical behavior of children born out of wedlock are more than well documented, and speak mountains. Spare me your statistical cherry picking feel good liberalism!

Lucius Publius, I don't lack anything...except perhaps ignorance. There's no cherry picking involved. When you start slapping labels on people: "illegitimate," "liberal," etc. you do no good. I personally think you're an intolerant, bigoted idiot, but hey, we all have our opinions. Doesn't make them true.

Look at every kid from a single parent family who is in trouble, and tell me, honestly, if that is the largest issue they face. Are they poor? Does their parent have substance abuse issues? Were they abused? What were their schools like? 99% of the time, they didn't fail because they didn't have a Daddy; they failed because they were behind the 8-ball for many, many other reasons. Again, a marriage license or a rich family isn't a magic pass to success, and rich parents can be horrible too.

Single parent households have been around since the beginning of time. People have always lost parents due to war, illness, and all sorts of other things, and they've always turned out well. By the way, check your wallet...the gentleman on the $10 bill was born out of wedlock. Good thing nobody told him he was supposed to be a lowlife criminal.

Anonymous said...

Oh, and Lucius, are you aware you've inadvertently backed up my point? You've said that a privileged kid from a single parent home has a better chance of turning out well, while one from a low-income home is statistically destined not to do as well.

The same stats for all kids, from nuclear families or not, n'est-ce pas?

If the parentage were so critical to the outcome, the socioeconomic bracket wouldn't matter--the kid would turn out badly whether she were rich or poor. So I guess it does have to do with economics and related issues...not marriage of the parents, yes? That's what I thought.

Anonymous said...

Ah yes, Mr. Anonymous wishes to undergo another round of intellectual beatings! Well, here goes!

Again, you cherry pick your statistics and cite George Washington as one successful child born out of wedlock. Well, what does the data say?

Here's some stats from Heather McDonald in "City Journal":

While having an illegitimate child often dooms the mother to a life of poverty, illegitimacy may doom her child to far worse. Prisons, foster-care homes, and homeless shelters teem with fatherless children. Tamiesha's baby is three times more likely to fail at school, three times more likely to commit suicide, and from 20 to 33 times more likely to suffer child abuse than are the children of low-income married parents. His prospects in later life are just as grim: 70 percent of long-term prisoners, 60 percent of rapists, and 75 percent of adolescents charged with murder grew up without fathers. The risks to children living outside a two-parent home go beyond social failure, as witness New York City's never-ending cortege of tiny coffins containing children beaten, suffocated, and scalded by their mothers' boyfriends.

Ah, but Mr. Anonymous, in his desire to display his morally superior "tolerance" for all the world to see, of course doesn't have any idea on who he expects to pay for the social programs that are required to accompany his refusal to be "judgemental". Why not simply discard all of society's moral codes that have accumulated over centuries, they're just so outdated and antiquated! Why not let everyone have sex at will, and procreate with impunity! Just raise the taxes on those idiot religious saps in the midwest who get married first!

The true beauty of medicine is giving people hope when there is no hope. The magnificence of technology is making the impossible possible. Our extraordinary advances in science have allowed us to break free of unfortunate physical circumstances. Therefore the individual medical choices presented before us have become vast, complicated and extremely personal. No longer should the “conventional ways” dictate the dreams of woman because for so long those ways have denied the realization of so many hopes. Adoption may be the solution for the some and IVF may be the choice of others. As women and as humans we should applaud both and refrain from injecting our own biases.
