Council backs congestion tax

From the Daily News:

The mayor said it is now "completely clear that congestion pricing has the strong backing of the people of New York City."

No, it was more likely due to this:

The vote came after months of intense lobbying by Quinn and Bloomberg, who has wined and dined council members at Gracie Mansion. Critics say he has tried to win votes by dangling construction projects and endorsements in front of council members.

The Wonkster has a complete breakdown of who the April Fools were.

Oh, gee, does this mean that eastern Queens will have to get mass transportation and (gasp!) their share of development?

Stay tuned!

Thanks to the Council for supporting another tax. Special thanks to Gioia and Liu. Hope the voters remember them when term limits kick in and they scramble for another political seat. I don't understand why this didn't come to a referendum or vote by the people who will have to pay this tax. Wait until the tax goes from $8 to $10. Leave it to the MTA -- More Taxes Ahead.

I agree. Everyone who voted for this tax will suffer in any political aspiration they have. Quinn's career is finished. Their are so many New Yorkers furious right now! The Councilmen are delusional if they think otherwise.
How can they do this when the price of gas is so high and we are in a recession.
I hope it fails in Albany.
I wish we had a complete overhaul of our City government officials.
I WANT A VOTE ON THIS CONGESTION TAX. THIS IS TAXATION WITHOUT PROPER REPRESENTATION!!!!!!

As quoted before, this will be Bloomberg's legacy. "Congestion Tax". We are in a recession and the cost of everything is going up and he has the nerve to push this underhanded way of making Manhattan a gated community. They (our city council members) should be ashamed of themselves.

What about the elderly and the ill who need to go to Manhattan for doctor visits and can't take public transportation. High health care costs and congestion tax. Nice job screwing the poor and the middle class by our political idiots. Must be nice to be rich. What a$$holes we have elected.

My my my eastern Queens is furious now, aren't we?

Well, going along with the decay of this boro over the past 3 decades means your position in the great game of this city has declined, too.

The point is the Manhattan, most of Brooklyn, and (gasp, what is this?) Long Island City is in favor of this tax.

Have not seen that lineup since 05. 1905.

A harbringer of thing in the future, too.

I think those who voted for the Congestion Pricing Tax on the city council were bought out.

Long Island City has no idea what it will be in for. Wait until all the cars park in their area to avoid the TAX.

Thank your council members.

Wait till this tax kicks in and people leave their cars home and take public transportation. You can't get on the trains now. The MTA just stated that they can't make the improvements they wanted to because they have no money. So many people will be clamoring to get on overcrowded buses and trains. Next they'll put a pedestrian toll booth on the 59th street bridge. Something has to give in this city. Middle-class and poor people can't afford to live here anymore.

ha! eastern Queens has been pushing development into LIC so long they forget reality. WITH MONSTER BUILDINGS IN OUR COMMUNITY THAT JUST WENT UP WE CANT PARK OUR CARS HERE AS IT IS.

For THAT, we can thank our council members (including your hero, Mr '50-story' Avella.)

I find it grating that QCC markets itself as representing the entire boro when their agenda is so transparently eastern Queens.

Well, not entirely true - they did take credit (against the wishes of other western Queens groups) in helping Dutch Kills UPZONE!

Thanks PD for meeting with them 'privately'!

I think we should all fully support extending the mass transportation system into the parts of Queens that does not have it.

Looking forward to the Civic Congress's mass transportion proposals.

Congestion pricing sounds great in theory but we are placing our trusts in politicians and the mta. Wasn't there a report a few months ago about the mta mishandling of their finances. How can we be sure the MTA will use this money to improve or extend mass transit? Weren't the majority of the city council and our new governor against congestion pricing. Why the sudden turnaround? These are the people who are forcing congestion pricing upon us.

I guess your kids don't breath in the fumes from millions of cars in the NYC area, nor, as so many Baysiders smugly assert, do you come into Manhattabn too often.

Gridlock is really nifty when the police or fire or medical personel are trying to get through crowded streets. Also a bit dangerous.

No the real reason that eastern Queens does not want this they will have to add to the transportation network, something that they have resisted for 70 years as it opens up that part of the boro to development and 'those people.'

The politicians don't want it because it will hinder development and force attention to infrastructure.

Tough shit.

You're dreaming fella.

It'll be about 40 years before eastern Queens sees any impact of
congestion pricing....get real!

Astoria, however,
is gonna get creamed!

What did you pour into your coffee this morning?

Oh come on now, the Bayside Biddies will get out of shape immediately!

how?

Most of us work in Manhattan so this will be great.

We all breath in the fumes from Manhattan, so anything that lowers pollution in athsma alley is good.

And we can't park in our community now, so how are outsiders going to find a space?

The opposition by our politicians is a prime example of how they serve the interests of the developers rather than the real needs of their constituents.

How will getting on your already overcrowded trains be after congestion pricing is put into effect? Not pleasant now - impossible soon.

This is great - it will send a powerful message to the morons that accept everything the community board, polticians, and local press tell them BEFORE the community gets trashed with development.

Remember, everyone smugly tells LIC development is 'inevitable.' So if the community gets outraged by it before it comes, that is great!
