A Brooklyn block has been turned into a junkyard where public parking spaces are filled with wrecked and damaged cars.

Calls to 311 went unanswered. So CBS2 demanded answers and got action.

A frustrated Sheepshead Bay resident took CBS2’s Political Reporter Marcia Kramer on a tour of his block. He said he and his neighbors have been unable to park in public spaces for years because they’re filled with junked cars, like one with no motor and no doors. He said more than 40 to 50 calls to the city for help have fallen on deaf ears.

“They say they’re going to send somebody out… but no one shows up,” he said.

The block was filled with damaged cars and apparent attempts to beat the system by leaving cars on the streets with no license plates or registrations scraped off.

Kramer demanded answers from the owners of the nearby auto body shops and called both the Department of Sanitation and the NYPD. There were a lot of excuses, she reported.

This happens in EVERY neighborhood where there is an auto body shop. It would seem that Sanitation would make a gold mine off this issue but they'd rather send out bogus tickets to homeowners for gum wrappers that blow onto residential property. What a shame.

Junked cars litter South Ozone Park

Legislation introduced to force junk car removal

Councilman Alan Maisel (D–Marine Park) has penned new legislation that would require the city to haul away cars abandoned without plates within one month of a do-gooder making a complaint, the local pol announced during a Community Board 18 meeting on Oct. 24.

Hundreds of derelict cars have lingered for months on his district’s streets over the years, vexing communities already strapped for parking spaces — so it’s about time the city follow its own rules and tow them away, said Maisel.

“There are a couple of hundred cars that have to be towed, and the city, for whatever reason, has chosen not to take this issue as a priority,” he said. “The legislation is putting the city on the spot to force them to do what they should be doing.”

Currently, once someone files a complaint about an abandoned vehicle without any plates, the Department of Sanitation is supposed to investigate within three days, tag it if it’s a complete wreck, and then remove it within another three days, according to a spokesman for New York’s Strongest. If it looks still in working order, then it’s up to the police department to haul it off, the spokesman said. And the police don’t have a time limit for towing away plateless cars.

The city has fallen short of its duties to address quality-of-life issues such as derelict cars dumped on the street, and it’s leaving locals fed up, said Maisel.

An all-too-familiar problem

I recently attended the Community Council meeting at the 105th precinct. I expressed my concerns about an illegal businesses being run out of a residential home on 107-16 Springfield Blvd in Queens Village. These individuals are fixing cars at all hours of the day right on Springfield blvd. In the process, they are dumping oil all over the street and sidewalks, and discarding oil down the sewer drains which eventually drains into Jamaica Bay. They have a tractor trailer parked in the driveway, and a full blown junkyard in the backyard! A couple residents at the meeting expressed concerns about this place as well, since it's bringing down the quality of life in our neighborhood and devaluing our homes. The community affairs officer told me that they'll be paying them a visit, and she'll contact the DEP. I also contacted the NYS DEC Police twice and they were very helpful. I also filed 311 complaints with the DSNY and DOB, for the messy conditions, illegal parking of the tractor trailer, and of course the junkyard in the back. I just want to show your readers some of the ghetto nonsense that we deal with in SE Qns on a daily basis. Thanks.

Jamaica junk car zone gets some attention

It’s a working class neighborhood in Jamaica, Queens. There are many families among the residents on 164th Place and 108th Drive. They take pride in their homes and the surroundings. That’s one of many reasons they reached out to PIX11 for help.

Many of the vehicles have out of state license plates, some have no plates at all, and one truck had a Diplomat plate. We investigated and learned it belongs to the Indonesian Mission to the United Nations. A spokesman said the truck was reported stolen in March, but the police hadn’t contacted the Mission. It appeared as if the truck’s front bumper and headlights had been stolen and the seats inside were missing.

Residents complain the abandoned cars take up valuable parking spaces and, since they’re never moved, it prevents the Sanitation Department from cleaning the street. In addition to being an eyesore, some of the vehicles are filled with junk, posing a possible danger, especially for the children playing on the block. There is a school on the corner.

Fortunately, there is good news to report. After PIX11 contacted the NYPD, the 113th Precinct sent officers to investigate. As a result, late today a spokesperson told PIX11, “one vehicle was issued a summons for being parked on the sidewalk, one vehicle was removed by the police department and 4 vehicles were marked to be removed by sanitation.”

Gets ticketed daily for expired inspections and 1x a week for street cleaning. Officers from the 107 just ticket it for expired inspection piling up tickets. Great Job -Not!!. If you can issue a ticket it may be towed immediately. I guess they found a cash cow for tickets. Auto body shops are trashing Merrick Blvd

"A drive along Merrick Boulevard from Jamaica Avenue all the way to the Long Island Border on Friday, September 9th around 6pm showed a complete lack of enforcement when it comes to illegal parking of cars (smashed & unlicensed) by auto body shops on streets and blocking sidewalks and illegal parking of huge tractor trailers. I counted at least 100 cars in various condition and about 20 large tractor trailer trucks parked on Merrick Blvd. This has been an issue that neither NYPD is properly addressing nor community board 12 and the local elected officials of that area (Senator Comrie, Councilman Miller, Congressman Meeks, Assembly Member Alicia Hyndman), ALL, who are aware of this blatant illegal activity that has turned Merrick Blvd into the new Willet's Point, except Willets's Point did not have people living right in the middle of it. The area between Archer Ave and 110th are the worst but that entire stretch of Merrick is completely awful.

I have heard with some of the local debates how the community has not been represented properly for decades by the Jamaica elected officials and this is a perfect example and even those running against incumbents (Vanel, Adams) HAVE NOT brought up the issue of these types of quality of life issues that are an eyesore in the community and make it look like shit, besides the fact that these issues are totally illegal. I have been in this community for almost 6 years and have seen this issue go from bad to worse, yesterday being some of the worst I have seen, since I have not been on that stretch for some time.

Ms. Katz, Jamaica is in Queens and you are always talking so highly (and untruthfully) about Jamaica, yet you nor any of the local elected officials, community board 12 and so-called activist like Adrienne Adams and some of the other so-called activist in this community (well, that is what they call themselves) have yet to put pressure on this issue or the many other blatant ones (take a look at the huge illegal garbage dumping going on right next to the C-Town market that sits off of Merrick by the Auto Zone) that go unaddressed that you certainly would not see in Katz's neighborhood of Forest Hills.

As usual this shows a complete lack of respect to a predominately black community by elected officials such as Katz, Comrie, Miller, Hyndman, community board 12, Rev. Flake and his crew, the so-called "church leaders" and these so-called activist they say they are activist.

But yet myself and Pamela Hazel have been the only ones to continually document, report, file complaints and bring up these same issues over and over again with pretty much zero results from the powers that be and those that should uphold the laws.

What I saw on Merrick Boulevard on Friday September 9th was utterly appalling and no community should have to tolerate this and all the other quality of life issues not being addressed in the Jamaica community.

There are no need for photos (which I have taken of this area for years on this issue), since ALL of YOU are completely aware of this but instead have chosen inaction. But to refresh your memory:

And when residents in this community do not stand up for what is right, as the people in Maspeth did when a Holiday Inn was to be turned into yet another dump homeless shelter then you all get the community you deserve, but elected officials are to be the voice of the community and show leadership skills and none of you have shown that including many of the new candidates running for office. AND by that way, it is not that difficult to solve this simple problem that is going on Merrick Blvd, the problem is inactivity by elected officials and properer enforcement of laws on the books. And having a news reporter come on to do some quickie story in the paper or a 1 minute segment on TV does NOTHING if there is not constant follow-up on this issue by the powers that be. The media SHOULD be doing hard reporting on WHY this issue has been going on for so long, why the laws are NOT being enforced and why there is little response from elected officials. You are all to blame for the conditions in Jamaica along with many of the residents and businesses that show complete lack of respect or any pride in this community, but bottom line, LEADERSHIP is needed, GOOD LEADERSHIP, which to this date has been very rare for the most part, with the exception of Senator Tony Avella, but this matter does not fall in his district, that is YOU, Leroy Comrie, YOU, I. Daneek Miller, YOU, Alicia Hyndman and YOU BIG CHEESE, Melinda Katz. Just more TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION.

NONE of this would be tolerated in a predominately white area and you all know this.

Now I am sure I will not hear from any of the powers that be since Pamela Hazel and myself know that this is the standard status quo response, which is NOTHING even though the elected officials work for US and we pay your over-bloated salaries for what amounts to part-time jobs of having photos taken for street naming ceremonies or other non-essential issues in the community which gives the illusion that you care and do actually work, just not on major issues that need addressed on the local level."

Junked cars litter Jamaica street

Crashed cars with no license plates are taking over the streets and sidewalks of a Queens community where residents reached out to PIX11 News for help cleaning up their neighborhood.

It’s hard enough for residents to find parking spots along 147th Place in Jamaica, Queens, and now they’re battling for space with busted cars making the streets and sidewalks look like a junkyard.

When PIX11 News arrived at the scene Wednesday, we spotted 11 plate-less cars parked on the city street and sidewalk. Many were dented; one was missing a front fender.

We were tipped off by Joe Moretti, a community watchdog who chronicles his neighborhood in the blog Cleanup Jamaica Queens Now.

Calling out the political gangsters

"Numerous residents called me last week.

They wanted me to reach out to The Untouchables, (Sergeant Cedillo and his team) from the 103 rd. precinct. Residents were desperately trying to have the abandoned, smashed-up, embarrassing vehicles removed before Easter.

Sorry supporters, I will not put that responsibility on The Untouchables. I may call them for another location, but not this one and not this time. They have come to our rescue over and over and over. Meanwhile, Katz, Comrie and Miller; the highly tax paid political gangsters look the other way and pretend that the vehicles do not exist.

The abandoned vehicles are a symbol of neglect. They have been parked at 108th. Avenue, near Merrick Boulevard since Christmas, (Abandoned Vehicle Avenue). On every issue, the problem remains the same; which is "the lack of law enforcement."

After reporting on this location many times, Boranian, the liaison at the borough president's office is still asking for the details to find the location. Well Boranian, you are not fooling anyone. Your have no intensions of trying to have the vehicles removed. So you use the excuse, that I did not give you enough information.

If you cannot find 108th. Avenue & Merrick Boulevard, get a GPS; or better yet, do not serve the Jamaica community. Your strategy is delay, delay, delay to deny. But cleanupJamaicaQueens will provide updates.

Talking about updates, the back glass on the blue vehicle was smashed and the hood is now sticking up.

Senator Comrie and Councilman Miller; ask yourself why Katz's area does not look like a primitive island? It is a damn shame that you all do a disservice to your own."

Untouchables get props from NY1

"Some of them are abandoned," said Sergeant Alexander Cedillo of the New York City Police Department. "Some of them have no plates."

Cedillo has made quality-of-life issues a priority since joining the 103rd Precinct's Hillside Conditions team a few months ago.

"This was one of the big locations that we had numerous complaints, numerous complaints, was that vacant lot right there. There was about, I would say 25 to 30 vehicles," Cedillo said. "We took care of it. There was about two or three cars that were actually stolen."

The officers also do nightly checks of areas that often have drug problems, prostitution and squatters. They have also been helping community activist Pamela Hazel in her efforts to clean up some of the garbage-filled lots and abandoned property. She started calling the officers "the untouchables" a few months ago, based on the old crime-fighting police show.

"Cedillo and his team, they have been so instrumental in helping us and doing the things that other people couldn't do for us," Hazel said.

The officers are also working with some of the business owners to make sure they are keeping their property clean, and that appears to be working in some problem areas.

Foreclosed property being used illegally

A littered lot, full of junk cars and tractor trailers and, unfortunately for Jamaica resident Beverley Smith, she's had to live next to it for five years now.

Smith says the residential lot is being used as a commercial garage where work is performed on vehicles which are stored on the lot, often blocking her view and her driveway.

Not only is the lot a tremendous eyesore but Smith says there's also a huge amount of noise and air pollution created.

"There's gas smell all over the place. They are painting cars here," says Smith.

The fed up homeowner called 311 on numerous occasions but no action was taken. And to add insult to injury Smith actually received three violations for the mess at the neighboring lot.

After Smith called NY1 for help the station first searched for the owner of record who apparently died before closing the sale of the property to another owner leaving the property belonging to the bank.

In the meantime, NY1 contacted the city Department of Buildings. A spokeswoman said since 2009 the department has issued seven ECB violations in response to complaints about an illegal commercial business at the location. She went on to say violations have been issued for work without permits, illegal use in a residential district, and failure to comply with the Department’s order to correct the condition. A total of $116,000 is owed in fines.

NY1 asked the DOB spokeswoman what action could be taken to address the situation and she said the location will be referred to the padlock enforcement unit which removes illegal uses from residential districts.

Junk cars removed from Jamaica lot

For a long time now, I have been complaining and filing reports on a vacant lot at 104-74 165th St that has had over 15 cars in various conditions, many without plates, but all I kept hearing was "Private property, we cannot just go in there" (this from some officers at the 103rd when I first reported this), "It is a sanitation issue", "We will get to it", "We need to do a long term investigation", "My mother is sick", "I have hemorrhoids", nothing but a bunch of dumb ass excuses.

But in flew Jamaica's "The Untouchables" (Officer Sgt. Cedillo, new to the 103rd precinct and his SWAT Team), who also did some investigating, but managed to have this whole area cleaned up within a couple of days. The lot is actually owned by a very shady Albert Basal of Plaza Homes, Inc on Hillside Avenue (http://cleanupjamaicaqueens.wordpress.com/tag/hillside-avenue/), but an individual, who lives a few doors down from the vacant lot, was doing illegal auto repairs in this lot and Mr. Basal had no idea this was going on, at least that is what he told me. Anyway, "The Untouchable" gave Mr. Illegal Auto Repair 24 hours to remove the cars. And just like magic, they were gone. But is was not magic, it was something unknown to many, a mysterious thing called DOING YOUR JOB.

Another big kudos to Sgt. Cedillo and crew, who managed to do something within a few days, that others could not do in months.

Disturbing sight by Muni Lot 1

"Hey there, today I was in Flushing by 37th ave where the the municipal lot is, and there is this car parked there that I have attached photos of. I understand that people died last week in a car crash but do you happen to know why they would park that there in downtown Flushing? It's very bloody and disturbing." - Tiffany

Answer: It was the closest open spot near the 109th precinct.

How do elected officials not see this?

"Mr. La Mura/liaison for the borough president and Leroy Comrie/Deputy to the borough president. This is what we have to endure on a daily basis. Photos taken on saturday 1/25/14. Mr. La Mura, you said that you wanted a specific location. Well, this is Dr. Auto located on Merrick Boulevard between 108 & 109 Avenues.

This chop shop and many others along Merrick Boulevard have been operating for years. No one believes that you cannot find this location. Get a GPS and stop your irrational excuses.

Do you know who to blame for this epidemic? The law makers, you and Comrie including who are privileged to sit with them and initiate so-called solutions. Another major problem is that the victims (residents) are keep out of the decision-making process.

About three years ago, then Councilman, Leroy Comrie vowed to make sweeping changes. We are yet to see one broom. However, this is the present situation at hand.

As stated before, the chop shops have now taken over side walks. As seen in the following photos, one car is directly on the sidewalk, another is parked on the street partly blocking the yellow hydrant.

As for the green car, half is parked on the street and the other half is on the sidewalk. It is against the law, but you and your political gangsters are allowing this because it is not in your neighbourhood.

We did not choose this inconvenience. We want a stop to this inferior treatment.

Team P/J has provided you with all the evidence, but in your quest TO DO NOTHING, all the evidence is not enough. No one believes you all anymore.

Junk cars still on the street a week later

It has been a week since I reported the two demolished cars, one sitting on 90th Ave between 168th Pl & 168th St and one on 168th between Jamaica Ave & 90th Ave. As of today they both still sit there even though it has been reported to 311, Department of Sanitation, local elected leaders, community board #12 and the 103rd precinct, which both cars are right near. From "long-term investigation" and "police find no evidence of a violation" to Officer Costa from 103rd Community Affairs telling me that he was not aware of it, then letting me know that the one on 90th should not have been placed in the impound lot, then the tow truck had an issue and then telling me that he will report it to the supervisor and it will be taken care of (By the way Officer Costa has been extremely nice and helpful, but the cars still sit). The one, completely demolished, doors unlocked, windows open, bumper with license plate sitting on demolished hood also has oil and other fluids leaking onto the road.
Why no help from local elected leaders on this? Why no help from Community Board #12?

And so the Jamaica bullshit and non-sense continues and no one does anything.

Do you think this would really fly in an all white community?

Do you believe this? There are two totally smashed up cars on the street that cannot be driven away and need to be towed to a facility, but yet the Police Department feels that a long-term investigation may be necessary. Do the investigation in a junkyard! I mean this is not the collapse of the economy due to greedy corporations and financial institutions, it is two smashed up cars parked in residential areas on the street looking like eyesores.

Bringing a junkyard INTO the park

A drive-in movie theater using junked-up cars and salvaged materials is rolling into the borough next month as part of an art installation designed to engage the public in discussions about car culture and "planned obsolescence."

The Empire Drive-In is a large, temporary installation that uses junked cars and salvaged materials to bring their drive-in movie exhibit around the country.

It will set up outside the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park from Oct. 4 to Oct. 20, and visitors can participate in discussions and watch films in old cars.

Okay, so the junkyards across the street are an eyesore and need to be replaced, but the museum brings junk cars into the park and that's an art project?

More Jamaica residents are calling for action

It seems that I am not the only one along with community activist Pamela Hazel and a few others who are extremely angry about the garbage problem in Jamaica and seeing very little done to help combat it from our leaders. I have been hearing a lot of grumbling lately about the garbage problem and especially in regards to our ineffectual leadership by the 30-60 year old crowd who seems to be very unhappy about all of our elected leaders, including you Mr. Comrie.

This was sent to me from Alana Ochoa Trafford who lives on 207th St between Hillside Avenue and 89th (not quite sure whose district this falls into). Here is what she has to say.

Dear Sir/Madam,  

I live on 207th Street between Hillside Avenue and 89th Avenue and I want to inform you of a few issues that are increasingly making this block an unpleasant place on which to reside.  Firstly, there is a hydrant completely engulfed by weeds close to Hillside Avenue. This happens every summer and no one seems to be responsible for clearing the weeds.  I called 311 about it and I was told to call the Fire department, which I called and was told that they are not responsible for clearing the weeds.  I then called your office more than a month ago to report the issue.  Nothing has been done about it yet.  Because people don’t care about the area, they are throwing garbage in the weeds.  It has become a disgusting sight that I have to endure every day as I walk down the block to my house.  Attached photo is a good illustration of the weeds engulfing the hydrant, though they have grown since the picture was taken.

Secondly, there are more weeds coming through a broken-down looking chain link fence at the entrance of a parking lot that is used by some of the businesses on Hillside Avenue.  The fence looks like it is in dire need of repair and the weeds need to be cleared.  As usual, neither has occurred and has never occurred in the three years I’ve lived here.  Attached photo shows the weeds as well as the state of the fence. 

 

Thirdly, as you can see from this photo, there is graffiti on the side of the building close to the aforementioned parking lot close to Hillside Avenue. Before the unsightly graffiti was sprayed on the building, there was a rather artistic looking mural that someone decided to cover in green paint.  The green paint doesn’t completely cover the wall, which is puzzling.  I’m not sure why this occurred, but this paved the way for the serpentine graffiti tagging that now exists.  Attached photo is a better illustration of the graffiti.  

 

More graffiti can be seen on buildings around the parking lot in attached photo. Lastly, attached photo (above) shows a garbage receptacle brimming over with bags. Sometimes the garbage makes its way onto the grounds of the parking lot and ultimately onto the sidewalk.  See attached photo.  Because of this situation, there are often unpleasant smells that emanate from the parking lot.  

I, as well as other residents on this block, would be extremely grateful if something can be done to resolve these issues in a timely fashion.  If necessary, I can be reached at 718-XXX-XXXX.

So, another unhappy constituent and a constituent who followed Councilman Leroy Comrie’s statement about contacting 311 and she even contacted the fire department (in regards to the hidden fire hydrant) and others and still it seems that nothing is being done about her situation on her block. And unlike me who uses nasty language, calls our elected leaders fuck-ups and do nothings, uses terms like low class ghetto and low class third world immigrants, Ms. Ochoa Trafford does none of that. This is a very well written plea, with no harsh language or name calling, she even starts out with Dear Sir/Madam, where I would probably have just said, “Hey Assholes”. So why no response to her pleas in regards to another quality of life issue?

What she is dealing with is the same shit they we are all dealing with all over Jamaica. As far as the over growing weeds ( a well too common site all over Jamaica), I encountered this mess on the totally low low low class ghetto section on the North side of Jamaica Avenue between 169th St & 170th St, right across the street from the nice block that has Bellitte Bicycles.




This block is nothing but super major low class ghetto/third world country shit, including the dirty Envy Nails Salon, a shitty furniture/mattress place (love the mattress out on the sidewalk in front of it, shown in the one photo) and empty store fronts and of course garbage all over.  Sorry, but these types of people are just plain disgusting slobs (and what has ruined Jamaica). Well, I am not sorry, sorry that they live in our community. I would not call them people or human, more like sub-human. It seems we are moving backwards on the evolutionary scale. Just the other day I saw a “third world” woman sitting outside in a chair actually picking out stuff in her daughters hair for about 30 minutes and throwing it down on the ground, very similar to the grooming habits of primates. She had four other little rug rats running around and playing in some dirt and I was waiting for one of them to start throwing feces at the others.

Right around the corner of this shit, is the all too common, abandoned vehicle with no license plates or registration sticker. I told two police officers sitting in a car on 170th Street about two of these vehicles and they told me they would alert the crime unit. When I walked back to that area, the one was towed away, but the other was still there, so it got the clean-up Jamaica treatment, just in case they could not find it.

Lastly, Pamela Hazel took a photo yesterday of the abandoned house at 107-58 164th, which I took photos of during our protest march on June 29th and reported the garbage conditions of the house and well, it looks like again nothing has been done for two weeks as the one photo shows.




Now do your damn jobs and help Ms.Alana Ochoa Trafford and clean up this other shit!

Continuing the tour of the 1st Jamaica Clean-Up Protest on Saturday, June 29th, not only reveals a very dark side, South Jamaica, but how totally ineffective our elected leaders have been in dealing with the horrendous quality of life garbage problem.

As we begin to make our way toward South Jamaica and then eventually to the downtown area, we encounter some sights that look as if we are in some third world shit hole, not one of the richest cities in the world and as Mikey Bloomberg likes to state, “New York City, the greatest city in the world.” Hey Mike, come out to Jamaica, specifically South Jamaica and see what is going on.
