Subway bomber waged a personal war on Christmas
From CBS 2:
The subway was attacked during rush hour by an apparent suicide bomber.
The alleged attacker has been identified as 27-year-old Akayed Ullah.
Six people, including Ullah, were injured in the blast.
Investigators said the bomb was poorly constructed, and failed to properly detonate.
They have the remnants of the device, which includes some type of Christmas light that may have been used as an electrical component.
Governor Cuomo said security has been boosted at high profile locations statewide, and investigators have been sent to Ullah’s Brooklyn home.
The FBI and NYPD bomb squad were on the scene as early as 8:30 a.m. looking for any information as to what may have motivated him.
The home is on East 48th Street in the Flatlands section of Brooklyn. A quiet, tight-knit community where neighbors said the only problem they ever had with the suspect’s family was over a parking spot.
Neighbors said Ullah lived in the basement of the brick multi-family home near Avenue N for at least the last 5 years. They said his mother, father, and brother — who has his own wife and child – lived in the unit upstairs.
Another basement dweller, eh?
From the NY Times:
Law enforcement officials said the attacker, identified by the police as Akayed Ullah, 27, chose the location because of its Christmas-themed posters, a motive that recalled strikes in Europe, and he told investigators that he set off his bomb in retaliation for United States airstrikes on ISIS targets in Syria and elsewhere.

Christmas surprise in Ozone Park
From PIX11:
Welcoming home a loved one for Christmas never gets old.
When it's a soldier serving the country that you haven't seen for years, there's almost no way to describe the feeling.
One Queens family got to experience that feeling first hand when Santa helped make a Christmas wish come true.
It happened at P.S. 121 in Ozone Park. PIX11 was there as Army Spc. Paul Hernandez was reunited with some of his siblings for the first time in years.

Merry Christmas from the Queens Machine!
This card is real.
This card is not.
But the winner for holiday messages has to be John Liu.
Hey folks, he wasn't serious about running against Tony Avella, he was just "dabbling" in politics! I bet the moronic Queens County machine and its minions were just thrilled with this holiday greeting from Johnny.

Cops play Santa for abused kids
From The Forum:Officers from the 104th Precinct took it upon themselves to turn one Ridgewood family’s Christmas into a merry one.
After learning of how an abusive father’s rage was ruining the lives of his wife and four children, a handful of Queens cops came together to collect more than $1,200 in cash to keep the kids’ Christmas spirit alive.
Capt. Christopher Manson told the story of Sgt. Martha Lequerica and Officer Nicholas Cadavid, who spearheaded the efforts to give new meaning to the holidays for the family, including the 5-year-old son left bruised and stitched from a beating. He said officers responded to the family’s calls of abuse and poor living conditions, which were later validated when they found children forced to sleep on the floor.
“They had nothing,” Manson said. “The crammed conditions there were immeasurable.”
Without skipping a beat, Manson said his officers started raising money throughout the precinct with hopes to better the lives of the beaten 5-year-old and his three siblings from 2-months-old to 11-years-old. Within hours, the precinct was able to raise over $1,200 and counting with help from the Det. Thomas Bell of community affairs as well as the domestic violence desks.
“He was an abuser,” Bell said. “He abused his children and his wife.”
Just the precinct’s crossing guards alone were able to raise more than $300 to help make the family’s holiday season a bit brighter, Manson said.
The captain said officers made deliveries over the weekend, bringing the children an assortment of items purchased with the money including a car load of Christmas toys, bunk beds, blankets, pillows, winter clothes, snow boots, chocolates and more.
“We’re just trying to improve the life of one family right now,” he said. “I think it’s going to make a significant improvement. Cops do a lot of good things”

Crazy Christmas house in Bayside
Courtesy of the Huffington Post:
For the last 17 years, Kevin Lynch has decorated his New York City home with Christmas lights. A classic game of one-upmanship with a neighbor escalated Lynch's yearly ritual into a yearly obsession, and now, well, Lynch might just have the brightest Christmas home in the City.
MyBlockNYC visited Lynch's Bayside, Queens home and made the charming video you see above.

Grinch kills Woodside's Christmas tree
From Sunnyside Post:
An iconic Woodside tree was butchered by vandals recently.
The tree, a green spruce tree that was planted in the fall of 2010 at Sohncke Square, was significant since its role was to be the neighborhood Christmas tree.
The Green Spruce tree was discovered on July 28 or 29th with its branches hacked off. “It looked like it had been cut to the bone,” one local resident said. “Shortly afterward it dried up and died.”
At the beginning of August, the Parks Department planted a tiny replacement, which is a temporary solution. In the fall, a more significant tree is expected to be planted at the square.
