Peak energy use expected today
From CBS 2:
The Big Apple is holding its collective breath Tuesday and dreading the possibility of brown-outs or even a blackout like the one we all suffered through four years ago.
Power wires sparked and ignited in Corona, falling down on parked cars and causing power outages. Several homes were evacuated in the middle of a swelteringly-hot night because of the dangerous fire conditions.
As crews worked on the downed wires, Con Ed was preparing for its record for peak energy use on a 97-degree day in 2006 to be shattered Tuesday when demand is expected to increase once offices re-open.
Unlike the blackout four years ago, Con Ed said they already have extra crews in the field, more on standby and have been investing a billion dollars a year to improve infrastructure.

What do you expect when the tens of thousands of illegal conversions as well as all the development during those four years goes unchecked and ignored.

Ya took the words right out of my mouth!
As good citizens, we need to report all the illegal conversions on our street; it results in an overtaxed infrastructure and is very dangerous
I have a flat roof that no-one but pilots can see, after painting it white, it made a HUGE difference in keeping the house cool. Pass this tip, because its a cheap and fast way of saving energy and $$$.
many of the illegal conversion and commercial use residents on my block only speak mandarin and korean.
each resident moves on the block with their oversized ,people mover van with sedan n.y.s.plates.
the mail boxes all have multiple names on them?
a "sanctuary city" with no controls and electric power
in 100 degree heat. .
thank you left wing politicians and environmental wackos.

"Left wing politicians" and "environmental wackos" -are responsible for your greedy neighbors carving up their basements? -And greedy businesses including mom-and-pop hiring undoc's to save a few bucks?
Oh, and who was it that opened these flood gates in Dec. 1986...why that ol' commie Ronald Reagan.
You are an obsessed, ignorant POS.
Now they're greedy businesses? I thought you had no choice but to hire them because no Americans want the jobs. The truth always comes out, doesn't it?
Not Con Ed's fault, its over population plain and simple!!!
clearly "illegals" cause all problems in nyc...they even brought their stupid hot weather!
Nice photo. Don't ya just love dem 4th of July fireworks?
Greetings! I am truly sorry to read of the Corona blaze. Unfortunately, some pedestrians discover a danger, only sadly, when victimized. And so I wanted to inform you of StreetZaps.com. I confer with Con Edison's Stray Voltage and Public Affairs Units and contribute to Wet Nose Guide and New York Dog Chat. Further, our electrical collaborators anticipate more summer than winter shockings in the years ahead.
Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best,

WHY URBAN METAL ISN'T PRECIOUS- Blair Sorrel, Founder, www.StreetZaps.com
Of course, you want a worry-free run year-round, so adopt this simple strategy:
EYEBALL THE BLOCK, AVOID A SHOCK.
Take just a few seconds to survey the immediate surroundings and make your trajectory toward a non-conductive surface, ie., plastic, wood, cardboard, rather than risking any metal or electrical fixture. The lowly, free-standing garbage bag, is you and your dog's best friend, most of the time, unless it's snowed and salted. Then you might contemplate indoor products. Consider the safer, hardware-free RopeNGo leash and harness to help shield against a possible zapping and for greater peace of mind.
CONTACT VOLTAGE DOESN'T DISCRIMINATE BY GENDER.
Your pooch's sex is irrelevant. True, the most gruesome scenario is that of a male dog electrocuted by its own urine. Our poster girl sidled a hydrant and limped for five days.Intuit your dog's cues, if resistant to an area, choose an alternative route. Elude potentially live work areas or carry your canine, if necessary. Opt for indoor products such as The Pet Loo, Hammacher Schlemmer's Indoor Restroom, or Wee-Wee Pads, if external conditions are ominous. Dog booties can leak and make your pooch even more vulnerable.
ARE YOU PLAYING RUSSIAN ROULETTE WITH YOUR DOG?
Any of these fixtures might be dangerous, so again, choose non-conductive where and when possible. (link to home page fixtures listed below and/or the visuals page):

– Street & Traffic Lights can leak if damaged internally, even if the compartment is fully closed and the light is not illuminated
– While wooden blocks anchor Scaffolding or Sidewalk Sheds, be aware that sloppy wiring by a contractor and/or the use of lighting equipment which is NOT WATER-PROOFED or even suitable for outdoor usage, may still shock a passerby.
– ATM Vestibules
– Decorative Lighting
– Dog Booties may increase
the risk of a shock
- Electrical Boxes
– Fire Hydrants
– Fire Police Call Boxes
– Manhole Covers
– Muni Meters
– Phone Booths
– Service Boxes
– Street Light Boxes
– Traffic Boxes
– Work Areas
After all, why chance it when there's a choice?
BETWEEN YOU, ME, AND THE LAMPPOST.
Tampered equipment can become pernicious so please map (Report Form) damaged fixtures and known hot spots.
about the year 2000,three 60' x 100' one family houses were demolished on my Bayside block. they were lined with 100 year old trees and green lawns.
the asian builders squeezed two ,two family brick dwellings with undersized rooms and driveways, into each of these three lots.
that is a total of six "families" legally, and six illegal basement conversions. 12 families instead of the original three.
since fences were installed by a legal one family owner, the others can not open the doors of their vehicles.(oversized asian vans).
they now park on their walkway to the front steps.
the city agencies (311)are failing to solve the problem.
the former democrat CM was all talk and no action. an excellent creator of sign carrying protestors".for get what i could not solve for you ,just keep electing me"
if you sit in "hot" dwellings tonight,it is because of over population by the "sanctuary city" and"amnesty" losers in n.y.c and nys government . my community has no A/C,because of the power cut.
Wow.
The responses here couldn't be any more predictable for commenters on this Crappy site.
Yes, peak energy use is expected today precisely because of immigrants and "illegal" basement "conversions" in newly built structures.
You know, the multiple logical failures here tell it all. You want to know why American universities' math and science departments are filled with Asian students and faculty? It's because the average American has zero reasoning ability.
Really? So you mean more people in an area will use up less electricity?
Thanks for setting the record straight.
failure in logic? i think these comments are pretty logical. poor planning + electrical grid that isnt updated = power problems. coned no longer has to plow X percent of profits into infrastructure upgrades anymore bc it aint a public utility anymore (look it up, villagevoice did an article on this a few yrs ago). since they arent beefing up infrastructure, its begs the question: why are our rates going up?

Really? Wow your such a smart little asshole aren't you:) Did anyone ask about Asian students? NO!! Your mouth is writing a check your sorry ass can't cash:)
Try also not to hate them.
I personally only hate illegals named Lino...
love how people go off topic about "math and logic skills"; not germane to the debate. If u cant take the heat, then just get outta the kitchen. go to a site like astorians.com for some hard-hittin' debate. Hot topics include "theres that smell again!" and "why wont they keep their dogs leashed?"
Astorians sounds like a Juniper Civic meeting.
astorians.com sums up what is wrong with discourse in this country. the moderator is PC to the pt she is pathological. thats what makes this board so great. someone here pts out a FACT, yet most americans can only see things in absolutes, when its much more complex (ie someone pts out something shady regarding SOME people in a particular group, yet dopes ALWAYS cry foul that you are libeling the ENTIRE group which isnt the case). Wrong is wrong, it doesnt have a particular ethnicity. The peeps at the top of the food chain are shady, and now, bc of the wonderful nanny state, so are more at the bottom. Leaving an ever-shrinking middle to subsidize both(and its not sustainable). Do you want to live in a favela?
"Not Con Ed's fault, its over population plain and simple!!!"
Bullshit! They have all year to be "On It" as they say. The only thing they are on are their fat asses!
Why do we pay exorbitant electric costs? They run this crap on us all year long so they can justify increases!
They are making so much money in profit but every year it's the same crap!
What do you expect when the tens of thousands of illegal conversions as well as all the development during those four years goes unchecked and ignored.
The real test is if these illegal conversions don't catch fire in the process of trying to cool themselfs in their rental garage and cellar apartments. This is how fires are started when renters rig electricity to power A/C units and other devices that overload a dwelling and start fires.

Hey! It's the Connecticut Yankoff!
How are things up in New "Haven" and Hartford? Got your Kevlar on?
Good. Stay up there we have enough losers down here.
No power in parts of Whitestone since 5 pm Tuesday. ConEd has given restoration estimates of 1 am, 10 pm, 2 am, 11 am and now 6 pm. Haven't seen one truck in the neighborhood.
Lino - Your intelligent comments are always appreciated.
we got your marxist /progressive points LINO.
now delver your thai crap food on your bike to the U.E.S. customers on the 28th floor.hope the elevator works in this "sanctuary city" caused power reduction.
your buddy ,bloomberg wants more illegal democrats to move from theArizona/Mexico border.
you can rent your bike out.
enforce the U.S.federal immigration laws now ,obama

Why do you confuse the law with racism? Con Ed can't keep the infrastructure current if they don't know about the ILLEGAL apartments, now matter what the ethnicity of the tenants.
Great...and the city planning commission just gave the green light to the disastrous Flushing Commons project...which will impose a total number of 65 stories jammed onto muni lot #1!
Talk about a power drain!
And is Wellington Chen and his errand boys at TDC going to be putting money into providing an improved power grid (or sewer system) before they build their mega-monster?
Not very likely!
Bloomberg and his TDC friends must go!
By the way...how did Wellington Chen manage to get on the board of the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art?
Really? So you mean more people in an area will use up less electricity?
Reading comprehension fail.
No, that's not what I mean. More people may or may not use more electricity. Why ConEd expected peak energy usage, however, has more to do with the coincidence of record-breaking high temps and the fact that many businesses would be re-opening after a three-day weekend.
Really? Wow your [sic] such a smart little asshole aren't you:) Did anyone ask about Asian students? NO!! Your mouth is writing a check your sorry ass can't cash:)
Nice dis. Doesn't make any sense, but a valiant effort.
First of all, if I'm wrong you wouldn't be so offended. Americans are falling behind in math and science, two fields in which success relies on logical ability. Many of the "arguments" in these comments defy logic.
Secondly, I would wager that most Asian students here know the difference between "your" and "you're." So maybe they're better at English, too. ;)
"Why ConEd expected peak energy usage, however, has more to do with the coincidence of record-breaking high temps and the fact that many businesses would be re-opening after a three-day weekend."
Right...and the reason the strain is so much more than in previous years when we had record high temps is because there are that many more people in the City than there previously were - in fact, Con Ed can't plan their infrastructure improvements adequately because they have no idea how many people to plan for. Kind of like what happens with schools, sewer capacity, etc. in a sanctuary city.
"Americans are falling behind in math and science, two fields in which success relies on logical ability."
Actually, Americans aren't falling behind. Their public schools are. It's a combination of a union thing and parents of the less bright holding the smarter kids back.
