Big payday for Flushing vet

From the Queens Courier:

A Vietnam War veteran from Flushing cleaned up a cool $1,000,398 from the New York State Lottery recently.

On Wednesday, June 16, Bobby McLeod had a $472 “Take 5” lottery winner in his pocket when he went into the Flushing News Island newsstand on Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue.

McLeod’s New York Lottery Black – Series 2 ticket was a $1 million winner. He’s been playing Lottery games for 25 years – because he likes "the thrill that comes with knowing this could be the big one."

He decided to share the big thrill by surprising his girlfriend of 30 years – meeting her at her subway stop later that day. “She looked at me standing there and got all panicked thinking something was wrong because I've never done that before,” recalled McLeod. "I told her I had some news that couldn’t wait.”

Congratulations - I guess the commitment to your girlfriend of 30 years is now over! She probably supported you through all those 30 years, who need her now; find another girlfriend under 30 years old to celebrate your good fortune!

wow, what sour grapes! can't enjoy someone else's good fortune? - shame.

I'm thrilled that a Flushingnite AND Vietnam Veteran hit it big! Since he was a VN veteran, he has to be of retirement age - perfect timing too!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

That's how you would be treated if you're that girlfriend.

I mean geez, if that guy really dump her, I dont' think he should deserver the money. GF for 30 years!.. It should be pay back time for all the 30 years of potentially waiting for him!

But yet, 1 million bucks nowaday can be spent in 1 day because it's nothing.

Let me bring you up to speed here - girls don't WAIT - girls CHOOSE to marry or to not marry AND girls have their OWN money.

The lottery winner is a Vietnam vet i.e. he is at LEAST 60 years old - therefore, he MAY have been married once before - his girlfriend likewise. They don't NEED a piece of paper to prove their love to each other or to anyone else.

One million is NOT enough to last a few lifetimes it's true - but, it will buy PLENTY of security - (and a whole lot of fun stuff) at the right time of his life.

Spend it ALL baby - make it last for the rest of the ride - go easy, nice and slow . . .

I wonder if any reporter has had the guts to ask to see his DOD form DD-214.

I hope he doesn't blow it.

WHY should a reporter ask THAT incredibly STUPID question?

We had MANY Vietnam servicemen from that area of Queens -

You're THAT jealous that someone won 1 million? come on . . . what an azzhole.

Babs, since you asked: Recommended reading Stolen Valor : How the Vietnam Generation Was Robbed of Its Heroes and Its History

no - I'm not interested.

The man won 1 million dollars - ACCEPT IT already - He won and YOU didn't - accept it and move on from there.

What he did or didn't do in the war is of NO concern to the rest of us - he stated he was a Vietnam veteran - that's all - he's not saying he was a POW with McCain yada yada yada. He served - end of story.

Oddly enough - YOU are doing EXACTLY what the author cautions us from doing - making assumptions based on what we preceive the war and its veterans were like.

The man is of the age - he is black - living in Flushing (therefore most likely working class during those years) AND if he didn't go to college - there is a very HIGH chance he SERVED simply because he was DRAFTED.

jeeez . . .

he fixed the ticket ,

To add because I KNOW you are going to comment if not ask -

Most of the working class whites and blacks did not go to college so there were not eligible for a student deferment - popular amongst the more affluent.

Why would they want or need to?

I'm sure the "reporter" has no clue as to what a DD-214 is. Second,he'll pay about 37% back to the government......the main reason i don't buy lottery tickets.
