More proof that affordable housing is a joke

So the Court of Crap is now accepting applications for 110 "affordable housing" units. "Affordable" being $1338/month for a single-occupancy studio. For whom in Downtown Jamaica is this rent considered affordable? The vast majority of market rate 1-bedrooms in the area cost less than this. In fact, in most parts of Queens, they cost less than this. And if you could afford this rate, would you choose to live in Downtown Jamaica?

If these are the "affordable housing" prices, I can't wait to see the market rate prices...

More Bloombergian affordable housing bullshit can be found at Bloomberg Watch.

Plus. you'll be living with welfare tenants. A mixed-use community. The latest rage. I can't wait to ride the elevators. Please don't step in the puddle in the corner over there.

Wow, just wow.

Jamaica is and always will be a sh!thole.

For that rent you can find apartments in Forest Hills or Astoria. If you so much want to live in the shithole called Jamaica, you can find cheaper apartments in the better part, north of Hillside.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think fitness centers, media rooms, and on-site dry cleaning go together with affordable housing. It's waste that drives up the rents.

I agree, no fitness centers, media rooms, dry-cleaning and so forth because for the people for whom this is or should be intended these are all expensive luxuries.

We need sub-$1000 rents with the basics. These suggested rents are only affordable to households making 70K or so.

Notice that the studios, which presumably are microscopic, could not be inhabited by a couple, especially one planning children, yet at least two working class incomes would be required to secure one.

i was happy about another lottery, i was all ready to send my request in for an application until i see a two bedroom requires a min. 80k paycheck a studio requires 45k

thanks for the affordable housing guys

if i was making 80k i wouldnt want to live in some high tech bldg where the locals are going to hate me for being a balla AND IF I WAS MAKING 80K I WOULDNT NEED AFFORDABLE HOUSING

I Lived in Jamaica all my life and let me tell you nobody around these parts can pay those prices let alone two people with decent paychecks... and we all know whats going to happen yuppies and out fo towners are going to move in just like Williamsburgh. theyve already built like three new buildings and a new one on its way with a 3 block radius distance from each other. I Just hope we dont become another Williamsburgh or all those areas.

^^ dont worry unlike williamsburg jamaica is actually a ghetto .... not just a rezoned industrial park... is not chic to live in the ghetto with out a buffer zone from the poor

This borders on false advertising, Affordable housing, bull !!! People can't possibly pay this for a studio, imagine the one bedroom..Mortgages are often less than this..Isn't the idea of living in an apartment so that you can SAVE money and afford the American dream to buy a home? Or is that a 19th century dream that needs to be torn down with that fence in a previous post?

Jamaica doesn't have to remain a ghetto either. During the 1960s Jamaica was a decent working class to middle class area.

If we get rid of pie in the sky jokes like that in the ad and provide stable housing attractive to hospital workers and retail workers we could have respectable people even if the incomes aren't the highest.
