Van Bramer wants cars off sidewalks

From DNA Info:

A local lawmaker is looking to crack down on car dealerships along Northern Boulevard that park their cars on the sidewalk and force pedestrians to walk into the heavily-trafficked street to get by.

City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer said he's received a number of complaints from residents about auto dealers on the boulevard in Woodside and Long Island City — an area that's home to many dealerships, including Toyota, Mitsubishi and Volkswagon — blocking sidewalks with their displayed cars.

There are at least a dozen dealerships on Northern Boulevard between Steinway and 64th streets.

The NYPD did not return a query about the number of tickets given to car dealerships in the area, though a spokesperson said that the commanding officers of the 108th and 114th Precincts are aware of the issue and are addressing it.

This is something that has been going on for years and not just this area, all the powers to be know this. The big question is why nothing is really being done and why a lack of enforcement. Follow the money trail, somewhere down the line someone is being paid off. No other city would tolerate this.

Either a million excuses why they can't enforce it, or they don't bother to enforce it or it takes forever. Just plain bullshit with this city.

I knew a cop in the 114 Precinct in the 90's. Neighborhood guy who actually cared about what was going on in the neighborhood. He tried talking to these dealers about parking on the sidewalk and all he got was the usual "I know so and so" routine. When all else failed, he went down and unloaded a mass amount of tickets on every car dealership vehicle parked illegally. Phine calls were made to the Boro Chief, the Commanding Officer and supposedly the mayors office. The mayor was apparently very good friends with one of the car dealer owners. When they were done teaming out the cop, all he got for his troubles was his tour changed and eventually bounced out of his precinct.

Enforcement? Many of these car dealerships are contributors to these do-nothing politicians. There's your answer.

Councilman Jimmy hasn't done squat for his district except accept political campaign donations (bribes) from developers.
Back door Van Bramer has been playing back door politics at the expense of the idiots who elected him.
He smiles and talks a good game but is one of the most self absorbed nasty screamers in the halls of city government.
He just keeps on grandstanding around town with the latest of his traveling vaudeville shows.
Watch out. He has his eyes on Gracie Mansion! Groan! That would be a major disaster for New York City.

Same thing with the derelict "cars for sale" in the area that take up street parking spots. Nothing is done no matter how many complaints you make to 311 or the local precinct.

Looks like Complaint's outnumbered Donations for Mr Van Bramer
It's not to late to pony up some cash, funny how these complaints can mysteriously go away.

send some kids on scooters and tell them to stay on the sidewalk. make sure you have your phone to document the illegal parking. if a car gets scratched, oh well. dealer can't sue you because he was breaking the law as well

How about car washes that take over sidewalks? I'm thinking of the big car wash on Metropolitan Ave across from Trader Joe's. You have to walk through steam on soapy, waxy sidewalks, and around the cars blocking the actual sidewalk while they're being wiped down.

Anyone who believes anything will be done about this..... I got a bridge for sale. The city could have this fixed in one day by issuing the fines called for by law.. City needs revenue, fine these guys.

I'd say there's a difference between a car parked in front of a car wash for a few minutes and a car parked in front of a deal 24 hours a day.

Why doesn't traffic agents take take care of this??? .their main jobis writing parking tickets andtheyhave towtrucks. If you want the police to handle this, hire back some of the 5000 you let the politicians leave with out being replaced.

OK, let's take a walk, cameras in hand, down Northern Boulevard this weekend, a prime 2-day car shopping time, and photograph any vehicles parked on the sidewalks. If you get in view a police car cruising by without stopping, even better, save it in your archives for later use.

In some cases I cant blame these people who have nice cars.
I parked my vintage Thunderbird on Stephen street aside Joe & Johns pizza on Myrtle and in one minute 2 ebonic inner city youth were at the passenger side of the car with an object. They were ether going to key it, slim-jim it or bust a window. This was 12 noon in broad daylight. I yelled HEY which was returned with "F YOU WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT" As I got closer and reached into my jacket (to snap cellphone pics) they took off running south on Stephen St. Naturally I didn't bother to call the 104

All the scumbags have gotten much braver ever since the mayor placed the police in shackles !! Lower Ridgewood is going down the toilet !!!

If you look at all the NYPD precincts on Google Street View, you will see that they park their cars on the sidewalks also. They live in the suburbs, sidewalks to them are apparently an alien concept. Cars Cars Cars.
