New policy causing animals to get the shaft

From the NY Post:

Animal-cruelty cases are being brushed aside because neither the ASPCA nor NYPD is taking the reins on enforcement.

The ASPCA laid off its law-enforcement investigators last month after announcing the NYPD was taking over “the lead role” in protecting animals — but police now insist they aren’t in charge, either.

Last week, the ASPCA released a statement saying, “The NYPD will now take the lead role in responding to all animal-cruelty complaints in the five boroughs . . . All eight NYPD patrol boroughs have been trained.”

But the NYPD has not yet rolled out the program or trained cops — and says it may never do so.

“The expansion of the program is under review . . . Staffing questions should be referred to the ASPCA,” NYPD Deputy Chief Kim Royster said.

“The NYPD will properly investigate abuse against animals.”

The switch over to the NYPD was put into motion in August, when the ASPCA’s newly appointed president, Matthew Bershadker, said the police had more manpower for handling the flood of calls his agency normally gets.

It's ok, I'm sure animal rights activist mayor Bill DeBlasio is going to take care of this, just as he got rid of the Central Park hansom cabs.

Oh, wait a minute...

Don't call the NYPD - they hate dogs!!!! They'll just shoot them. They are a bunch of ill-trained dumbed-down assholes.

Most of them are Chinese now and we know the Chinese sell and eat dogs at Main St.

Asians, for the most part, have no love of animals. They see them as accessories and then abandon them when they get old and sick.

Hell, the police cannot take care of noise and illegal parking complaints, now this.

Something is majorly wrong with our city.

No other city on the planet had "ASPCA Police", and New York didn't need them, either. Just another way to pick the taxpayers pocket and line the pockets of the pieces of garbage we seem to elect over and over. But you're right-- I'm sure Bill Sandinista will set it all straight. Thank god we have him for the next 12 years!

Anon#3 - you couldn't be more wrong. The ASPCA barely kept up with animal abuse reports - but at least they had a tiny staff that tried.

The NYPD's answer is to simply not take reports at all - as the officers of Ft. Lazy (114th pct) did when someone committed a felony by trapping and killing 7 cats. How would you feel if someone took your pet and killed it, and then when you went to the police they steadfast refused to even take a fucking report?

It's a real shame that the only politician that seems to give a rats ass about animals is Tony Avella. I'll be surprised if Bill D does anything about this situation anytime soon.

A lot you know. EVERY SINGLE cop I know is an absolute dog lover. I have seen cops go out of their way to rescue dogs and to find them homes. That means a hell of a lot more than sitting behind a keyboard and complaining about things you know nothing about. However, I do agree with the poster who stated that the police seem to have a hard time dealing with other quality of life complaints in the city. They definitely do not need this added responsibility until they learn to deal with other issues plaguing our neighborhoods. But it just seems like the city never has a problem dumping more responsibilities onto a department that has drastically shrunk over the last 15 years. Maybe that is a major part of the problem.

You mean like us Americans who stick our parents in senior care homes where they are neglected and abused? Asians live with their parents. It's an obligation. Americans, I guess we just abandon puppies when they pee on our carpets and we then realize we don't want to take care of them.
