Liz Crowley wants to make Bronx cemetery a park

From the Daily News:

Part of Hart Island, a 130-acre isle off mainland Bronx that has been used as a public cemetery since 1869, may become the city’s newest park after a Queens lawmaker vowed to revisit a measure that would bring it under the jurisdiction of the Parks Department.

A Queens lawmaker?

City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley (D-Middle Village) said she’ll re-introduce the bill she co-sponsored to transfer Hart Island’s jurisdiction from the city Department of Correction. Crowley said she aims to have the bill — which died in committee on New Year’s Eve — reintroduced by next month.

Crowley said she plans to work with the Council’s new Parks Committee leadership to give the plan a fair hearing.

The northern end of the island — which hasn’t had new burials in many years — could easily be turned into a park, said Melinda Hunt of the Hart Island Project, which is advocating for increased accessibility to Hart Island.

A Parks Department spokesman said he wouldn’t comment on legislation that didn’t yet exist, but said the department has refused jurisdiction of Hart Island in the past because the agency won’t operate on an active burial ground.

I guess since Crowley lacked the talent and ability to obtain a park anywhere within her own district, she's focused her attention on another borough. You know, Liz, there's a cemetery in the town you grew up in, that should be preserved. Why not focus on that?

These freaking politicians are getting so desperate to find any type of room in this city.....here's a plan to make some room in this city to make a park.....deport the illegals in nyc and you will see much space open up especially in parts of queens that are way overburdened and run down by illegals. Places like corona, Jackson heights and all along the 7 train.

Look out Lutheran, Mt. Olivet, St. John's, Calvary and all other cemeteries in the 30th district...Crowley is out to get you.

What ever happened to the bus route that was going to use the space beneath the Myrtle Ave. el in Ridgewood? Anything ever happen there?

Crowley could demand that that space be re-claimed as parkland.

Funny how she dissed her County dem boss cousin and ran in the congressional primary against Meng. She was slapped around by then Speaker Quinn with less money for her district and then was rewarded for her primary efforts by "Cuz Virginny Joe" with no opposition in the council primary.

Gotta love Queens Politics!

She pays more attention to her dead constituents than her living ones.

I guess its the quid pro quo.

she surely is off of her rockers and I hope she sees this -- how would she like it if her family members were buried there -- what an idiot

Maybe Dizzy Lizzy could re-locate to Hart's Island?

Nah, we couldn't be so lucky.

St. Saviors? No need to make a park there. Useless island near a prison? parktime!

I been to the island many times. There is an old church and some buildings on that island, all over 100 years old. Also some cold war missile silos. Its really interesting but some of those structures may be to far gone for restoration.
The burial fields are just a tiny part of it

The difference between St Saviours and Hart Island is one can be built upon and the other not.

These Queens pols are amazing, aren't they? This is part of a larger deal that she (or her cousin Big Joe will benefit)

Just for the benefit of you -

all that have your dearly departed buried in local cemeteries, there has been a move afoot to convert old cemeteries into parkland.

Of course, like the graves, its something underground for quite some time. And yes, like the graves, it will eventually see the light of day within two or three generetions.

Liz Crowley is THE most incompetent elected official there ever was. She can't accomplish anything, her staff is just as bad as she is and she never follows through on any issue. St. Saviour's is a good example of just one of her broken campaign promises.

Have you seen this new city council she is probably one of the more competent ones

Queens has too many cemeteries....wasted land for the dead when the living can utilize all that land for new housing or better yet...parkland. Hopefully one day there will be a politician who can turn this around and rid Queens of the overpopulation of dead people.
