Douglaston wants better transportation

From Bayside Patch:

A bevy of elected officials representing northeast Queens are calling on the city to increase bus service to Douglaston and add more bus stops in the community.

Currently, the last express morning bus leaves the community at 7:45 a.m. As a result, many Douglaston residents living south of the Long Island Expressway have limited commuting options.

"There aren't enough bus lines serving the neighborhood," U.S. Rep. Steve Israel, D-Great Neck said. "We want additional bus stops and our fair share of federal funding"

Israel and state Assemblywoman Nily Rozic, D-Fresh Meadows, want to see an increase in funding for the Federal Transit Authority Bus and Bus Facilities Grant, which pays to replace, rehabilitate and purchase buses and construct bus stops.

Would they settle for more bike lanes instead?

Good point - why aren't there any trains in Flushing, Bayside, College Point, Whitestone and points east?

Who gives a shit about another Eastside line in Manhattan when we don't even have service in most of Queens?

How about above-ground monorails along Northern, Francis Lewis, College Pt. Blvd and the Horace Harding? You put up the columns, add a ramp, stick down the tracks, add a Metrocard machine and you're done - no excavation required! As if this would ever happen - lol!

I like the monorail proposal. But this is NYC. It took 20 years to build the JFK express. The once vital Rockaway- North Queens LIRR railway sits vacant 54 years and counting. The over capacity Queens Blvd subway literally sits under a collapsing over capacity roadway. And let's not forget the 3rd World roadways around our two run down airports. (How is the $14Billion in annual airport revenue being used?) Nothing will get done . Urban planners are more concerned with opening pedestrian plazas in Manhattan than with Queens' plight.

Heck, the reason Douglaston is such a nice neighborhood is because it's secluded and hard to get to via public transportation.

I agree, enjoy the serenity and keep the outsiders out!

Nice photo-op. But why didn't they schedule a follow-up meeting to report what they have done about the problem?

MTA is going to spend another $20 billion to tunnel under manhattan

sorry guys, no more money left

Don't people take transportation into account BEFORE they buy a house? Privacy and peace comes at a price.

If you want better public transportation don't live in Northeast Queens. You build public transportation you open the door for lower home values and the urbanization of the most suburban part of our borough

@anon 9 and 10: express buses to Manhattan don't lead to lower home values. In fact express buses increase home values if the express bus route runs great service. Staten Island which is the most suburban borough is a great example of that as express bus service to Manhattan actually encourages people who want isolation from the rest of the city to live there which increases property values. But your point is valid with additional local bus service and SBS should NEVER make it to Northeast Queens.

Anon No. 12:

Why shouldn't it?

How dare people talk about putting trains in Northeast Queens and residential areas. As you can see and hear these areas remained peaceful and residential because there are no trains! Express buses are fine and beneficial!
